Just to give an idea how strong the Jet stream is at present. Flight http://www.flightradar24.com/THY4/53a2496 is currently travelling at 706 knots per hour(812mph) across the Atlantic. Flights arrived in London from the US 60-90 minutes ahead of schedule today

    Speed reduced to 600knots now.

K5 buoy has dropped 19.1hPa in 3 hours.

    Incredible.

Does that mean they are breaking the sound barrier? 812mph is well over the speed of sound, even at ground level!

Is doing 742mph which is not far off the speed of sound.

    Edit:

    Thanks FWTV for clarification.. :)

Lots of planes holding cant land in Dub "winds out of limits"

They are not near the sound barrier. Remember, the air is moving with them so they would need to fly and AIRspeed of Mach 1, not a groundspeed.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't realise that moving air (the wind) affected the speed that sound travels. I'd assumed that sound waves travel at the same speed, no matter what the wind speed is but it does make sense that wind speed would make a difference.....my bad. feel a bit silly now :o

Flight radar 24 combined with the ATC feed is way more interesting than TV this evening. So many planes on hold alright and looks like diversions are beginning now. Would not like to be in a plane in a holding pattern right now! Thanks again Mech1 for your feed. ALWAYS very much appreciated

Agreed. Sounds like some planes are bailing out and heading to Shannon.

I'm right on the Atlantic coast here in Donegal, it's a bit windy alright, nothing spectacular though, I've often seen a lot worse. (no interruption to electricity supply anyway) I hope I don't eat my words before morning!

Current 10 min Ave. 27km/h gusting to 50km/h. Max gust of 61km/h during heavy rain earlier. I'm expecting higher gusts tomorrow afternoon/evening time down in these parts but nothing anyway near severe

    Just to add,

The lights flickered before 8 here and I see Ballyshannon has a fault that began around the same time.

There's no warning from Met Eireann for tomorrow afternoon yet, but it will be windier almost everywhere tomorrow than it was tonight.
