Was fairly calm here in Newport, Mayo yesterday and last night. Castlebar seemed to have got worse than us. Today has picked up a bit with some strong gusts and heavy rain, but noting major yet anyway.
Is next Wednesday looking like a severe storm does anyone know?

Met Eireann were on local radio in Galway at 1.30pm and said the West is going to get the worst of the winds this evening and tonight

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭corsav6

Drove from Newport to Claremorris and back through Ballinrobe. Winds have picked up a lot and open spaces are very challenging to drive in.
Seen a few trees down and 1 shed roof ripped off on the Castlebar to Ballinrobe road.

It's been very gusty in Castlebar for most of the day, not as strong as last night so far, but more sustained.

Force 9 gusts W'ly on Dublin Bay now, good and bracing on the piers!

Also, the air temp has gone from 9C to just under 16C in 3 hours. The breeze is oddly warm.

Stepped out for lunch an hour ago in Limerick - very weird having that warm breeze in January!

We had nothing like that last night 4 miles outside Newport, a few gusts but nothing like Castlebar experienced.
The landscape behind our house acts like a funnel for SW winds making the gusts stronger. These winds must be hitting us from a different direction.
Last years storms were serious for us, hoping next Wednesday won't be a repeat.
I'm on McHale road now and the spot lights at McHale park are rocking.

Looking at the Metar and Met Eireann reports i would say we are the least windiest place in the country right now with gusts to just 30km/h. Very mild with a Max of 14.0c earlier.

BBC weather map (which I think uses the Euro4 model) shows something along the same lines for the wee hours.
