Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Met Eireann sea area forecast does mention force 11.

Of course these are winds at sea. In the historic Dec 1997 storm Cork and Shannon airports had violent storm force winds. We are not looking at something like that extreme happening today!

6z GFS ups the ante a little bit.

Looks like a widespread storm. Maximum gusts near 140km/hr but suggest there could be higher gusts in peak gusts on exposed coasts.

What is noteworthy is the chance of widespread inland gusts to 110-120km/hr. Which is very uncommon.

Also storm only slowly abating tomorrow afternoon.

A red warning advised from me on latest output.

My oh my you all seem to not like our so call met service being run down, but if my memory serves me right, there are many on here who agree with me when it comes to them giving early enough warnings. As a matter of fact the explanation given for an orange waning on the ME sight is not anywhere near as severe as that given on Meteoalarm. Time will tell who is right, by now, with less than 6 hours till the storm is supposed to hit here, I would have thought that little time to put a red warning, as suggested by the experts on here, is very small. And You can keep winking Jerry and his mates, I shall take my advice from here, and MT in particular.

Anyway, I shall say no more on the subject unless I feel there is a need to.

    Wez

Met Eireann cannot become regarded as the boy who cried wolf. On a rising scale of severity it is of the utmost importance than the integrity of the red warning is maintained for a widespread emergency situation. Today's storm will be bad but it's certainly not far past the marginal side of a red warning (if at all) for a few places on the basis of publically available weather data. It has been many years since we've had a really really bad storm in Ireland yet if you get caught up in the hype on rolling news channels, tabloids and indeed message boards you can end up thinking that youtube footage of a trampoline rolling down a road is an indication of 'hurricane force red warning extreme weather'

It may well be the case we see red warning later. But if so, met Eireann have not made a blunder by not calling it earlier. They have to make a call on probabilities

How come M.T labelled this an extreme event, is it because its hitting the south where they are not used to these winds or because of the heavy rain accompanying it? The wind gusts predicted aren't as strong as the ones predicted for two storms ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,970 ✭✭✭Storm 10

last night in the sea area forecast Met Eireann said "backing westerly and increasing to violent storm force 11" would that not warrant a red warning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

06Z GFS catches up with the stronger winds the hi res models had been showing since yesterday.

A very stormy night ahead for the Kerry coast.

A much more widespread area is going to be hit by severe winds. The severe winds 2 events ago was affecting coastal districts of the west/northwest.

Widespread gusts to 70mph are more than possible, which is significant.

Met Eireann haven't done a whole lot wrong BUT.....as all models this morning continue with the storm and as WC says the 06z ups the ante a red alert is needed for at least the southern half of the country

HIRLAM has been rock solid on track and intensity since 06Z yesterday. The latest run continues that trend.

I cant see any significant downgrades or track changes happening now.

They will probably put out an Orange for other counties soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 261 ✭✭aboyro

Orange warning for rest of the Country plus the risk of coastal flooding for the NW

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Is there any chance we can take out the "seek shelter" part of the thread title or change it to something else? I just think that wording is too dramatic rather than being helpful.

Tbh the warning is misleading while the red alert covers those counties a yellow alert for the rest of minster and Leinster should be in affect.

Ahh just updated with orange alert for the rest of the country.

What the hell is the deal with an orange alert for cork and red for the rest of the counties along the south coast?! The mind boggles!!

No can do unfortunately - if we want to use the red warning thread heading the text is set.
I agree btw, the 'seek shelter' element is overly dramatic
Best I can do is remove the preset warning and type it in ordinary font - thoughts?

Depends on when you need to be back in Dublin by.

If back by tomorrow is necessary then plan to leave soon.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
Failing to plan is planning to fail.

I know this is something I say a lot but it really does help. For example last night it rained on a freezing and untreated motorway. The road surface tirned into a skating rink. I stopped and got my vehicle off the road. With me I carry a "winter pack". Last night the fleece top, hat and blanket were of use. I was able to stay warm without needing to have the engine running. So fuel was conserved. An hour or so later there was a heavy shower and a slight increase in temperature, which resulted in an improvement in road conditions allowing me yp get moving again.

So by planning for the worst situation, I had suitable items with me in the event of an interrupted journey. Which came to pass.

The High Risk Seek Shelter can't be changed by us Maq. The tech team of boards have to do that.
However would you not want to seek shelter in areas with the red warning. Just my opinion.

Independent Peoples Republic isn't it, therefore no longer covered by ME. You'll have to get your own met service. :)

This is a potentially life threatening event so it should be left as is

Serious question though, why are we not includes in the red alert? Not saying that orange isn't serous but can't see why we would not be included in red alert??!

I would say change it manually, we're talking about a borderline Orange/Red event, not a once in a generation type storm, it is a bit too dramatic sounding.

QUOTE=Lumi;88159692]Maybe 'Avoid Unnecessary Travel' might be better[/QUOTE]

But then there's a contradiction if we take it out because the red warning means to seek shelter as worded by Met Éireann

STATUS RED - Severe Weather Warning - Take Action

The issue of RED level severe weather warnings should be a comparatively rare event and implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions.

I just think it sounds too much like impending doom is at hand. Avoiding travel and staying indoors is good advice, but seek shelter sounds like people diving from their cars to avoid a meteor strike to me. :p
