Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

GARDAI are investigating a string of stabbing attacks this morning that has left one man dead and two others injured.

The incidents took place in Dundalk, Co Louth. One man has died after he was attacked and stabbed on Avenue Road. He is understood to be of Asian descent. His age is as yet unknown. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood that two other men - both understood to be Irish - were subsequently injured in separate attacks.

Gardaí who were called to the scene confronted and disarmed the attacker.

He has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being detained at Dundalk Garda Station. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours. It is understood that the attacker is originally from Syria.

Gardai are investigating whether this attack was planned, or was random in nature.

I thought they are all well qualified doctors etc coming over from Syria ?

It would be best not to simply speculate on motives just yet. Nationality is incidental until more is known.

Pretty sure the attacker was just after leaving the cinema before he started his rampage.

Before this descends into a muslim bashing thread, I see no relevance to your sarcastic post regarding the immigrants that have/are coming over.
It is understood he is from Syria but not confirmed.
And even if it is confirmed he is from Syria then what difference does it make?
Is it somewhat worse that a Syrian would murder someone than if it were a French/British/Irish national?
Murder is murder regardless of your nationality.

Someone is murdered and this is your response? Really?

I think by now after so many of these type of events turned out to be nothing but coincidence we should know not to speculate or imply anything until further information comes out.

Anybody using a tragic event, where people have lost their lives, to score cheap political points needs to take a long hard look at themselves...

Well every cloud has a silver lining. Innocent people dead and injured but at least we can make gloaty little posts!

Although I'd imagine some people are still actually rubbing one out in vindictive glee.

Why take the risk and let them in? They are obviously not compatible with social norms in the west and would be more at ease among their own kind.

And I wouldn't have had any cause to make the post if the OP, first response and several other posts weren't so cunty. Obviously people are going to respond to such low nastiness, and the fact they outnumber the low nasties is heartening at least.

Anyone got any actual updates or is this gone meta already?

I still dont really get the eh meaning, relevence, attempted sarcasm, humour, whatever. I obviously dont pass that much attention to AH postings so!

Where it has happened would have been very busy at 9am, heavy and slow moving traffic. Would almost be at a stand still if schools were open. Plenty of people will have witnessed a horrible incident!!

Too early to speculate but RIP to the victim, it scares the ****e out of me that life can be taking so cheaply.

It's a reference to the case of an Irish citizen who may or may not have been wrongly imprisoned in an Egyptian prison. Edgy stuff.

Fcuk all to do with this incident, but hey, they're brown and possibly Muslim.

Most Syrian people are fine people.

It doesn’t change the fact that even Interpol said that the migrant crisis was used by terrorists to gain access to Europe, and thousands of terrorists were believed to have arrived in that period of the crisis.

It does appear to be a terrorist attack in Dundalk. Some people will downplay it as to normalise it. Others will overplay it for others reasons.
It doesn’t change the fact 1 person is dead and more injured in an attack where it was said the man responsible who is from the Middle East was intent on stabbing as many people as possible.

Well done to the Gardai. Who did a professional and efficient job with disarming and arresting the culprit.

If this had happened in London it would be getting more reactions on here.
Also if the 3 places being mentioned are where the stabbings happened then the Gardai were not very efficient in tracking him down.

Regardless of the attackers probable skin colour/ethnicity, regardless of his probable religion, and also since the details are yet to emerge, lets not jump to conclusions shall we?

However at first glance this does look like what has been happening all over Europe for the past couple of years, does it not?

Expect to hear more of the "sure Irish people stab other people too" line of thinking.

Well that is true, we have to wait and see what the response time is.
TV3 say the Gardai are investigating if it is terror related.

Unfortunately we're very used to knife crime in Ireland.
If you are referring to random stabbings, we've had them here before too...

The motivation for the stabbings is what deems it terrorism or not.

For those upset about so-called agendas being pushed forward, hearing the usual cries for not speculating and jumping to conclusions is equally infuriating.

Imagine seeing strong evidence of potential problem and those around you put their hands over their eyes and fingers in their ears, awaiting for said problem to be confirmed before reacting.

The discussion of one extreme scenario should not be stifled by the alternative extreme viewpoint of another.

There's not much detail to react to though, and I don't mean that as an attempt to downplay the tragedy or the likelihood of it being a terrorist attack, it's just that the gards are saying nathin.

One Japanese man dead, two other people injured, Syrian man in custody on suspicion of murder.

Briefing at 3pm and they can hold him for 24 hours, hopefully we'll know more then.

the Yakuza in Dundalk? sounds like more of a punishment than an assignment...

What are you talking about, the 3 places could be (and I think are) less than 1 - 2 minutes from each other. How do you expect them to arrive at an incident quicker than that?

    The three scenes mentioned: https://www.google.ie/maps/dir/avenue+road/Seatown,+Dundalk,+Co.+Louth/@54.0004495,-6.4026321,15z/data=!4m19!4m18!1m10!1m1!1s0x4860cc2e2fd1f3b9:0x4a89321f1aa28a9f!2m2!1d-6.3884445!2d53.9948004!3m4!1m2!1d-6.3785854!2d53.9963248!3s0x4860cc25bdb9c137:0x3700b87720727b4d!1m5!1m1!1s0x4860cea1a49fa2fb:0x7e63acc3299d5835!2m2!1d-6.3960974!2d54.0058016!3e2

Good luck getting from the Avenue Road to Seatown via the bypass in 1-2 minutes.

There is about a km of a walk between Seatown and the area of the Avenue Rd/Inner Relief Road where this happened. Even in a car at that time of the morning it could be a 10 minute drive.

    triads are chinese not japanese

So possibly some sort of power struggle between the triads and the Yakuza for control of the Dundalk underworld.

If some middle eastern bloke came within 5 meters of me I would politely ask him to stop his approach. If he did not cease at this point he better have a really big knife and know how to use it.

Talk about hysteria! There is as much in this comment as any other in this thread. If you said 'dont bother' or they take their time on a call out then maybe!
