What is the story with Maurice? Is he injured?

I honestly believe if McGrath wasn't manager Dillon wouldn't be next or near the first 15. There are several players not even considered that could do what he does. Workload etc we'll be told he brings to the table but so does Brick and with far better results but hopefully he proves us wrong on Sunday. Hard to argue with what McGrath's results but this selection baffles me every time. Dunford has sacrificed his game for workrate etc but he still contributes on the scoreboard. When Maurice comes back who will be the one from the five forwards to lose out?
And pauruc mahony will surly see more than last 10 mins IMO

Though personally I know it's very harsh to say this but I think they play better without shanahan

He's so good at what he deos their inclined to take easy option sometimes and pump hopeless ball on top of him and let him work stupidly hard for it..

(which tbf he deos very well...better than anyone I've ever seen to harass/try tackle two defenders)

Without him they have to be a bit cleverer etc about working the ball in/though midfield....would they have opened up Limerick as much if shanahan was playing as a one man full forward

How Dillon is still in the starting 15 il never know (dls pet). We need scoring forwards. We have brick in as the ball winner / slogger which he does an unbelievable job at. We need more lads who will naturally score from play. Clare are under strength so I think we'll still win this game. Come championship/ when Maurice is fit I'd be very surprised if someone else got dropped
how unfair to criticize Dillon above all the other forwards ,,if you look at the job he is forced to play in a system that is so negative ,barring the second half of the Limerick game, is he any less a forward than say Kevin Moran or any of the other non scoring forwards/midfielders/defenders, easy pick on one lad

Jake Dillon was on the team before Derek McGrath was manager. He scored 1-1 against Clare in 2013 and 1-2 against Kilkenny. Infact I think he has more championship goals than anyone on the panel. I wouldn't have been a fan of the role he is given now as I always thought of him as an edge of the square man but I can see the benefit he brings to the team especially the last day. He won't last the 70 and will be replaced as the game opens up and there are many who will come in but wouldn't write him off having a big say in this.

The game itself is very intriguing. Clare are doing what we did last year and building from the 1b division. Their last 3 games have been steadily more difficult. While Clare have effectively been in Division 1a the last month we have been in division 1b. We did get our job done early this year but the last 4 games have been not of the same standard. I know the second half against Limerick was good but they were really just giving some younger players a go at a higher level and trying a new style of play. Clare had Kilkenny at them the whole game even if it wasn't the real Kilkenny it was still a Cody team.

Both teams look like they have a strong panel and with the style of play they adopt, the players that are missing won't count for much in the greater scheme of things. The subs used might. I'd have great confidence in Waterford provided they start reasonably well. Will this be a cracker or a dour niggly one, Galvin is the ref so it should be the former. I think this Sunday could be the start of a future Laochra Gael episode.

Come back to me Sunday night. Gway boi would u, Colin Shane paddy and Moran are scoring #dlspet brick does his shift. If there was an assist count like the soccer in England brick would top it hands down. Jake offers a high work rate. Wayne Rooney would do the same if you gave him a Hurley and helmet

Compare him to paddy Shane or Cian Lynch. I don't even want to go into kk because I hate him. There's more wing backs doing a better job defending and scoring than jake Dillon. Jesus the Clare centre back will probably out score him Sunday

No. I won't compare him to those lads. He isn't keeping them out of the waterford team. Considering maurice mahony or stephen bennett are not fully fit then he is only keeping out brian o halloran or tom devine. If you prefer those two to jake then that's grand. Personally i like seeing those 2 come in as an impact.

Think about the job Dillon is being asked to do. What part of that is he doing wrong? Who would do it better in your view? I'm not trying to disagree with you I'd just like to see some substance behind this #dispet theory.

My God more bitter sh1t from our insecure brethren in the West. Led of course by Fear Beg.
Jake Dillion had as much skill and ability as any of our current forwards at their age. I for one thought he was not going to make the step up initially because of his lack of physicality. He has however developed, as a result of a lot of hard graft no doubt, into a selfless hard working team player who has become a critical link in a Waterford team on the brink of something big imho. If a scoring chance presents itself during the course of his duties don't worry about his hurling instincts.
On the other hand my 3 genuine concerns for Waterford on Sunday would be in what I expect to be a real war situation would be

The absence of Maurice. He is our chief ball winner and has brought a physicality and cuteness to his game that I did not expect. Needs to be right for championship. Can't believe that anybody could think we are stronger without them.

With no question whatsoever about their hurling I seriously fear about the ability of Bennett, Curran and Dunford to impose themselves physically on a very tenacious Clare defence. Their ability to win their own ball and when in possession resist being channeled down blind alleys by defenders will be crucial.

And I'm seriously not stirring here but the amount of time the two Fives lads give away possession either by poor passes or booming clearances to unmarked sweepers is a worry. I'd hav no doubt McGrath has spotted this and is working on rectifying.

As I said I expect a battle here against a highly motivated and talented Clare team where a win and a second league title would be a great but not essential step in our quest this year.

Shanes distribution can be dodge - but that has improved.... I have seen him play better than he is currently.

I think Dara on the other hand hardly wastes a ball and it is an obvious strength of his and a big asset to the team

Defends the eastern by criticizing 5 lads from the West...and accuses another of west bias.

Fairplay lad, you have outdone yourself.

I think Dillon has been playing well in the league, but his hurling let him down a bit the last day. He's better than that and deserves another chance.

Clare cannot tackle, I don't think there defense is that good either. They conceded 2-19 to a Kilkenny side missing half their starting forward line. Theyve a fantastic forward line but if Conlon is actually out that is a big loss.

There are normally ticket booths outside the ground beside the new stand and on the old stand side. The latter are actually pitchside in the field beside the stadium.

If it's a close match hope waterford can shade it today

If anything to stop this nonsense from sean stack in the examiner that we lack skill, motivation and work rate

But I would pass it up to beat them in the championship....either way it'll be a very good measure of where waterford are at...

The very best of luck to Derek and all the lads today. Not vital we win it and as said above I'd let today go if it means we beat them in June but would be nice to add another league title all the same.

Amazingly Waterford are coming into this under the radar slightly with the Clare bandwagon after taking off media wise since the Kilkenny win. I can see Waterford winning this.

Lucky. lucky Clare. Ye're boys should've been out of sight. Poor game, though.

We had it won and had it lost

Gaa should charge €15 for next Sunday's replay. Is it in thurles??? Didn't hear it going out

Chaos getting out of the old stand

They should charge no more than a tenner:D. Only bit of excitement was in the final minutes of the normal game and the 2nd half of extra time. Otherwise a dire game.

There was a lot of poor shooting today on our side, the missed frees would have been very disheartening. That shouldn't be an issue the next day with Maurice back on them.

Realistically, we should have won that well but to be honest I think people got very carried away with Clare and that we are better than them. Both sides will probably get a lot of stick but I won't lose any sleep over it. Plenty more to come from this team. Shane Fives was outstanding, some daft talk the last while about him being in danger of missing out.

Don't like criticizing players too much, but on form this year Kevin Moran is the one I'd be dropping the next day. A bit like 3 years ago when he was also captain, he looks out on his feet.
