Pssssttt.....don't anyone tell BD that no manager has lead his county to back to back All Ireland's in the modern era. Hope he didn't put money on us winning Sam this year, and as for next year....jayzus BD, think of your poor wallet !!!

For a defender if you get a yellow you are subbed, get skinned twice in a row then you are subbed.

Interesting observation .. it's a dog eat dog game in the Dublin defence. I was talking to one of the players after the Monaghan 1/4 final win in 2014.. they were a good 10 points up at the time and this fella went into a challenge knowing he was gonna get creeled by 2 Monaghan players.. I remember asking him in the context of how the game was going why he made the judgement call .. his words were something along the lines of if he didn't make the challenge he wouldn't have a prayer of getting a game in the semi

Why do match programmes list teams in the orthodox 1-15.
Shouldn't there be a bit more nuanced about it at this stage
Show teams in the actual formations they play in most of the time?

It is a minor thing I know, but it annoys me!

It's a good point ..very hard to analyse the team out tomorrow position by position .. never mind Philly - but the likes of Cooper and Fitz spent as much time in the Donegal half as they did defending last time out .. we'll basically play 13 forwards then 13 defenders ...

I wonder will there come a day where Michael Murphy is referred to as a "false 14" by a commentator?:D

Seriously but, it would nicer if we were given the actual gist of probable formations rather then going along with the pretence that teams are 1-15 "man to man".

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Is there not a case to me made for the traditional 1-15 man to man formations not really existing anymore, unless its on paper?

You have sweepers, double sweepers, 4 man swarm defense if Aidan O'Shea gets within an arses roar of the ball, attacking half backs etc etc. And that is just us. It doesn't even take into account the other formations that other counties have.

Methinks we are stuck with the traditional 1-15 on the program/team announcement and then just figuring it out from there, once the team takes the field. Inter county managers certainly aren't going to reveal their hands ahead of time, just to keep the spectators happy.

very difficult to get Donegals 1 13 1 set up on the screen before the game especially as they all need to be in the same half of the pitch

    No bet yet my chum!

I prefer lumping on single games rather than tying my cash up.

When you see Dubs cut from 2/5 to 1/3 in August for a semi final you'll know the money is down :)

Aye yer dead right PD ..personally I don't think there's a discussion to be had on whether DC or Paddy play CHF tamarra - there has to be a large degree of adaptability based on the opposition set up. The whole concept now of marking/covering space has taken a certain degree of the specific position skills out of the game - when you have 13 defenders within their own 45, the days of the quick footed impish wing forward are dead

Out of curiosity where would yous rather see DC play?

    Falf forward line

    Flynn, Kilkenny, Connelly

Every day of the week imo

would rather see Kilkenny start shooting though

Strong enough team named. Interesting positional switches all around.

Still no sign of MDMA. AI club finalists are usually back by the semi final stage. Was that knock he picked up in the club final serious? Cian was limping at the end of the Rossie game too. Gulp !

PD it's Micks hammer that is the problem.

Hopefully we get a half decent game today Nidge its blowing a gale here at the minute.

Rather than where he plays the question I'd be asking is how he plays. With the retirement of Alan B he's probably the only lad that has the vision and ability to stitch passages of play together like AB. That was a huge change for Brogan who in his earlier days was a heavy scorer for us to then become the "assister".

I'm not sure DC' is in that frame of mind to sacrifice a degree individuality for the greater good, but that's how I'd like to see him play.

Bloody club match put back an hour here to 12.30 leaving me under pressure for the Ros/Kerry game :(

    That's a great point.
I'm not sure he's there yet either. I guess I saw kilkenny in that roll but he's developing into someone close to Flynn with his ball winning, fielding , defensive skills etc, helping the team in a selfless way but in a different capacity.

TBH I think someone like Costello or Mannion might get there faster.

AB was a special player though, our best in many ways. Everyone on the current team would have to raise their game to arrive at his level.

The result of the first sf looks like it's already been settled. Kerry 6 up after 22 minutes.

Roscommon couldn't do anything right in the first half, balls dropping short, wides from frees that are very scorable.

Kerry are very capable of punishing you if you don't take your chances, and that's exactly what they did in that first half. They've let up in the second, but the game was over long before half time.

Dublin are destroying the Donegal kick out in the first half. 3 Dublin forwards within 25 yards of the Donegal keeper at every kickout which is forcing him to kick it long up the middle every time. No clean ball whatsoever for Donegal. Really impressed with the workrate of the dublin forwards

The motor passed the NCT anyway.

Defense has been playing a blinder today. A few of the passes haven't stuck, but other than that, Dublin have controlled everything today.

Delighted with the performance stuck to the game plan, patient and clinical.

Can't wait for the Kerry match now.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Did Donegal play the same way in defence? 1-20 is a serious score against them.

They were slightly more attacking but not by much.
Most of Donegal's scores came from frees.
Dublin have the Donegal's tactics sussed. But Donegal are so brainwashed they know no other way to play.

It will be very interesting to see how Dublin set up v Kerry initially. But they are so good now they can switch styles depending on the opponent or the score in the match.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I enjoyed the game delighted to see Kilkenny scoring more today than he has in the league so far.

Didn't record the game again, looked from the seats that McFadden gave Cooper a few head shots, how did it look on TV, he went off straight away I assume he's good to go in two weeks, no biggy? ??

Though McCarthy picking up Murphy looked smart

On tv it looked to me that he was basically just whacking at Cooper with alternating hands while making no effort to actually hit the ball. He didn't strike him on the face on purpose but he also took no action to make sure he didn't strike him on the head.

It's a completely irresponsible way of "tackling" and is basically a roughing up in the guise of making an effort to play the ball

I thought Kilkenny was outstanding. He looked like he was playing in an All Ireland Final with the amount of sprinting around he was doing

    Just watched the replay there.

McCarthy played that game with a 15 stone man in his pocket. Absolutely owned Murphy.

Worrying the amount of frees we gave them though.
