I see your point, but I think the key difference for the next CBA compared to previous ones will probably center around player discipline and player health. I can't see the NFLPA ever allowing the clowns in the NFL to continue presiding over player discipline. So I think an independent disciplinary process will be a bottom line. I also think players are more acutely aware than ever, of the long term implications for their health post football and how the league looks after them. So I think we'll also see significant improvements in that area after the next CBA.

there will be token gestures made by the nfl but by 6 months max into any potential standoff the players union will be put under massive pressure to end it by the players. any health changes will be made due to public perception and potential loss of revenue through sponsors the players will never be that big of a power in the nfl

They only ever make changes because of public perception. But with every passing year, more and more ex-player autopsies are exposing the long term damage that was caused by football. So by the time the next CBA arrives in 2021, RE: player health, things could be a whole lot worse. Another concern for the league is, parents are a whole lot less inclined to have their kids going down the football route. So regardless of what current players want, I think by 2021 the league will eventually have copped this and they will need to make reassuring moves. But I think independently arbitrated disciplinary procedures will be the make or break issue for players & the league. And I don't think it will get anywhere near to being a lockout, because some franchise owners are already leaning towards taking a idiot like Goodell out of the disciplinary process. But it being the NFL and the front office being the muppets they are, I suppose anything could happen in 2021.

Entertaining little watch for those interested (it's a comedy website, not a sports website - though as a random piece of trivia, the chief editor's dad is an NBA coach).

It's the right decision, I couldn't see any good in him playing another year.

Yup it's official, can't blame him. He goes out on a high.

Great decision from Manning. He was a shadow of himself all year and yet bows out with a second ring. That said, he has left $19m on the table so I'm sure it wasn't as easy as a decision as it appears.

The Broncos need to get searching for a new QB because Osweiler will never be the answer IMO.

I thought osweiler did a good job last season when he was the starter.

If Manning could win a Super Bowl last year then Osweiler certainly can. Once they keep the bulk of that defense together they'll be alright.

Do think they'll draft a QB to develop while handing over the reigns to Osweiler for the year at least.

    Calvin Johnson is retiring

The best WR I've had the pleasure of watching in my time as a fan.

All of these retirements lately feels like the dawn of a new era.

Christ, Stafford can't catch a break. He finally gets a coordinator who can get the best out of him & now his go-to receiver retires.

Behind Golden Tate, there is very little pass catching depth there & unfortunately this years class of free agent WR's are quite poor in comparison to seasons past. There's not too much talent coming through the draft either, so the Lions might have to rely on Ebron & TJ Jones more than they would have hoped.

Pity we didn't see him with an elite QB for a season or two, it may have been something absolutely special.
Just 30yrs in Jan, so it's a shock to see the guy exit the NFL, but he must have his reasons (injuries I guess).
Maybe give the body a rest for a season or two and then make a comeback?

As a football fan I'm sorry to hear he's going. he was an incredible athlete, always a monster to watch, loved it.

As a BEARS fan, though, I'm over the moon. He TERRORISED us. He had 96 catches & 1,480 yards against the Bears, his most against any franchise. He never got tired of beating up on us.

As a football fan it sucks to see Megatron and Best-mode retiring but as a person I think they are making smart decisions. You see so many players getting broken up in their thirties and quitting younger seems like the right way to go if you want to live a long healthy life I think.

Completely agree. Make your money and get out as quickly as possible.

Does he now miss out on the HOF or does his talent get him in?

He should go in, I have a feeling players will start playing shorter careers, retiring around 30 odd

If he gets in, he'll be waiting a while I'd bet. The backlog is quite high, and if the likes of TO are missing out, then Megatron does for a while too.

Mitchell Schwartz talking fairly in depth about OL play. Pretty damn interesting, and eye opening, in my opinion.

I would have disagreed in 5 years as Johnson always seemed a model pro - I would say lack of leadership would be something I might knock him down a bit for (just from what I could see in Lions games) but he wasn't in the least bit disruptive or unprofessional that I can remember. But right now he just doesn't have the bulk stats at under 750 catches and under 11,500 yards and I think with how things are going that 10,000 yards is now not going to be much more than a "very good and long career" that a lot of people will reach - I expect at least a half dozen currently active WRs will reach it by the end of the decade (Gronz, Dez, AJ Green, J Jones, Deymarius, Ant Brown, Desean, possibly even Jordy, Garcon or Maclin). The single season receiving record is going to stand well to him there but while people may not agree with it, in the NFL if you don't have rings or a long playoff career (20-25+ games) you need bulk stats to get into the HOF.

His single season record was a monster year and he was an immense talent. He will get in the HOF but it will probably take some time.

On a side note I don't think his single season record will be his after next year. I would fancy Julio and or Brown to take it next year.

It was and he was, but your second paragraph is why I don't think it will stand out as much as if for example Peterson had broken the rushing record... basically, it's going to be broken again a lot sooner than later and very possibly before Megatron is even HOF eligible. He'll be very much on the "down the line" list, and while talent alone could/should get him in, his lack of team success or bulk stats will stand in his way. He'll likely be competing with guys like Andre Reed (who went to four SBs and has 200 catches/200 yards on him), Michael Irvin (who won 3 on one of the best teams of all time) and Cris Carter (who is 300 catches, 2,000 yards and 47(!) TDs ahead of him)... all of these guys also played pre 2004 rule changes too, meaning he should technically be ahead of all of them, not the other way around.

He very much could get in, but I'm guessing it'll be way, way upwards of a decade before he gets serious consideration.
