Or Tom Brady (grates me to say it but he's in that conversation!)

Until he takes to driving around taxi's for superbowl week laughs he'll always just be "in the conversation"

in non nfl news one brian dawkins jr committed to his fathers college today id kill for another 10+ years of dawkins in the nfl

For me Ed Reed was (quite comfortably) the best safety of his era and maybe all time - the 2004 passing rules play a big role mind, as he was better suited for a pass-heavy league. At Polamalu's peak he was unreal, but otherwise I found him a bit overrated, and his coverage abilities completely fell off with age if I recall. I would have Dawkins behind both of those, but it's not a shot on the man... incredible that there were three all timers in that spot altogether (Sharper wasn't a million miles off and I feel Nick Collins could have hit Dawkins type heights had he not got injured). It's my favourite position in the game, probably because I played a lot of rugby as an undersized flanker so figure that would be my best fit if I were to have played 'Murcan football. Makes me kinda sad that while there is some serious talent there right now, it just doesn't stack up to the three above.

Also a huge John Lynch fan. You can't like the safety position and not like that guy! :D

For me with my eagles hat off it's
    1. Reed
    2 Dawkins
    3. Polamalu

With it on bdawk is the greatest footballer of all time

Hard or me to rank the lines of Ronnie Lott

Wouldn't argue with people putting Dawkins over Polamalu at all, I just edge to the latter because he was one of the very, very best playmakers of all time. That said, he had good fundamentals, but they were nowhere near Reed and Dawkins (outside of Reed's tackling near the end, which fell right off with age & injuries)

I never saw the likes of Lott live either, but for me it always grates how little extra credit todays DBs are given compared to the older guys, regarding the rules changes. It's always brought up when QBs are pushing for 5,000 yards, on 110+ passer ratings at seasons end, etc as a stick to beat them with ("Marino/Montana etc would have destroyed the league with these rules!"), usually by the older crowd who grew up on those 80s guys. But yet the reverse is rarely mentioned, say for example during Revis' ridiculous 2009 season where he barely gave up anything at all despite facing a plethora of best of their generation/future HOFer types if I recall, or Reed/Bailey's coverage skills, or Woodson's ability to make play after play while conceding very, very little (though he defensive pass interference calls shot through the roof his last year or so at GB... mind you he should have been playing S by then).

I've gone on many a rant about it, but it irritates me no end how someone can say "[old timey QB] would toy with this league because of the rule changes" and then in the next breath say "Lott would put everyone in hospital these days, WRs would sh*t themselves and never go over the middle" when the opposite is actually true. If that were the case, coaches would constantly go over the middle and get first down after first down after first down after first down from the record breaking number of flags Lott would draw. Then he would be benched at the half, and rarely see the field again.

Don't get me wrong, Lott could potentially adjust and prosper also - but that's not what those people tend to insinuate, instead always bringing up his big hits, etc. It's that type of double-think that just drives me mad. :p

Lott would spend his entire season suspended these days.

I think we can put these Kaepernick to NYJ rumours to bed...

Bottom line with Kaepernick - jets have not and are not interested. Colin has wanted out for quite some time and this impending divorce...

    — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) February 4, 2016

Was reported months ago. Hiring of Chip Kelly changed nothing. He's done nothing to build a relationship and a trade remains very likely...

    — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) February 4, 2016

Kap continues to rehab daily in Vail and will do so into the spring. No plans to be in San Fran for the Super Bowl or anything else...

    — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) February 4, 2016

Makes sense for 49ers to try to put on public face about keeping him, for trade leverage, etc, but there are major trust issues here

It'll be nigh on impossible to top last year's offseason, even if the tedious defaltegate crap derailed it somewhat, but at least we have two or three QB stories to keep our eyes on.

Kaepernick, Manziel, RGIII, and even seeing contract situation for Cousins and Fitzpatrick etc.

RGIII will play somewhere next season, probably behind Romo in Dallas.

I cant see anyone giving up anything for Manziel but Kaepernick is bound to find somewhere(maybe Cleveland?)

Dallas probably the only place likely to give Manziel a chance but I think they'll go for RG III

    Should be interesting off season

What if Dallas spend the #4 pick on a QB? Romo + Wentz = no Manziel and no RG3.

Anyone want to hear Noam Chomsky talk about football?

He's not a sports fan, by and large, and this is quite wide-ranging in terms of topics and issues around corporate sports, but he does make a Super Bowl prediction. If you're a fan of his work, like I am, it's rare to hear him address this other area about which I'm passionate that normally wouldn't talk about...

Aside from making his totally ill-informed prediction, his discussion of Pat Tillmann and college sports are pretty interesting.

Thanks so much for posting that, RDS.

Really interesting podcast. Love the bits about Bernie Sanders and Tillman in particular.

Some nice pieces over on NFL.com about football stories from the Bay area. Long enough pieces.

The only one I've read so far is about a college team from 1951 (University of San Francisco) really interesting story though.

The others are on Al Davis, Bill Walsh and Jerry Rice.

The Bill Walsh piece is good, worth the read, the Al Davis piece is not great, written by Mike Silver who seems to be doing his best to make it all about himself.

Bob Sanders for the Colts another one whose career was cut short by injury when he had a chance to be great.

    No love for Rodney Harrison?

I loved watching Ed Reed play but he would be behind Tim McDonald for me of those that are retired. Cam Chancellor has the potential to be the greatest SS of all time for me. He is still young and he needs a long career to overtake McDonald and Reed but if he keeps playing like he has the last five years then he will be the greatest safety of all time for me.

I think maybe he doesn't get the love he deserves because he is playing alongside Earl Thomas. Thomas is the best free safety I've ever seen too.

Johnny Manziel's agent has cut ties with him. I mean for all the fun about his mess ups but it's kind of sad how quickly people seem to be leaving him when at this time he needs people around him.

He needs to want to help himself before anyone else can help him,

And so it begins... he's going to go full Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russell pretty quickly, I reckon (RGIII's availability for Dallas could be a killer for him, especially since he's only two years older and likely will cost very little). You never got full Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russell.

Story being released that he threatened to kill his ex girlfriend.

Ah here Ryan leaf is in a league of his own for being off his game from day one.

I read he struck his ex girlfriend "several times" but she seemed to stop cooperating after a while.

Only because the Raiders kept Jamarcus "went ahead of Megatron, Beastmode, Revis, Patrick Willisd AND Adrian Peterson" Russell the f*** away from the field as a rookie! :pac:

What's funny is, Peterson and Megatron were absolute Al Davis wet dream type players; I'd reckon it's a slam dunk he would have gone with one of them had Jamarcus not been in the draft. Some serious talent near the top of 2007 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_NFL_draft

Shocking to see that Dwayne Bowe went ahead of Greg Olsen and also that as rubbish as he has been this year, Dwayne Bowe would still have been a better option than Jamarcus.
You also missed Joe Thomas off your WTF list
