Regarding retirements, can players simply retire even if they are under a long term deal?

    Yeah, they can.

They can retire but usually they will have to repay some of the signing bonus. Chris Borland is the obvious example.

On Mike & Mike on ESPN this morning they said he'd have to return $3.2m

could see the lions going in big for jeffery now

I'd be very surprised if Jeffrey gets anywhere near FA, no way can the Bears let him leave.

I think the Bears will find a way to keep him, but there's a lot to consider from their perspective. When he's on the field he's really good, sometimes fantastic. Ultimately, the Bears won when he was playing this year and they lost when he wasn't. BUT his production is by no means in the top 5 or even top 10 WRs in the league. Part of that is that his development might have been slowed down by his injuries. But there again, there have been so many injuries, so many games missed, that this has to be factored into what a team thinks he's worth paying. Also, from the Bears' perspective, Cutler has shown himself capable, this year, of picking out people other than Forte and his no.1 receiver. At times he was playing with receivers like Royal, Bellamy, Mariani, and Wilson, and still getting the ball to them. When you consider that they presumably have a lot of faith in Kevin White coming in this year, that all might factor in to how much they are willing to offer Jeffery.

The only thing is the Lions being a divisional rival might persuade the Bears to up their offer. But if the Lions are scrabbling around looking for a replacement for Megatron (which Jeffery isn't), I can see them paying over the odds for someone, and that someone could well be Jeffrey when all the other factors are considered.

    Justin tuck retired

One of the best Giants of all time & easily one of the top 5 since I've been following them.
After months of praying and careful consideration, I have decided to retire from the game of football. I've had 11 great years and honestly I leave with very few regrets.
I'm thankful to my family and close friends for their unwavering support. My beautiful wife and kids have dedicated their lives to being my closest support system and I'm eternally grateful.
I want to thank the New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders for giving me a place I could call home all of these years. The Mara, Tisch, and Davis families, I'm forever in your debt. To my coaches: thanks for having me ready at every stage - the Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, you name it – thank you for teaching me about professionalism, preparation, and the pursuit of perfection. To my teammates: thank you for always going to battle with me each and every gameday, but more importantly, thanks for being my brothers for life.
And lastly, the FANS. What an incredible environment you've created for me over the years to call a workplace. You all have been so supportive of me and my family, and without you I would have no game to play. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This isn’t a good-bye, my family and I will continue our charitable work with Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy and we look forward to continuing to give back to communities that have given so much to us. God Bless.

Agree the Bears must try to keep him.

Not a lot of WR Free Agents out there though probably a big market for Jeffrey

This is the biggest problem with the current system. There is a very low chance that Jeffrey makes it onto the FA market. The Bears will tag him or make a reasonable offer with guaranteed money.

The Eagles signed Zach Ertz to a reasonable contract. $20M guaranteed and potential of $40M. But he was looking at playing the last year of his rookie contract for $1M. Big chance to take for what could be $5M or so more.

Very few top tier players make FA. Suh was one of the exceptions and look how it benefited him. Other teams will do everything they can to keep top players from reaching the market.

Statement from Cleveland Browns EVP of Football Operations Sashi Brown on Johnny Manziel

"We've been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny's continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time."

    Well see ya Johnny.

Who will pick him up at this point? Dallas? Can't see anyone else taking him as he's not worth the hassle.

The only organisation that would be stupid enough to pick up a player like him is Cleveland. So I say he is toast.

Superbowl week is weird. Obviously my definition of a 49ers legend differs greatly from the "NFL Experience".

Reports that Kaepernick wants out of SF and the Jets are his preferred destination. Jets said to be interested .

    All unconfirmed of course.

It seems to be coming from a Manish "unconfirmed source" Metha article, so I wouldn't put to much pass on it. He'd have to take a massive pay cut for the Jets to be able to afford him

So you're saying those 6 starts where he had 1,150 passing yards (at a whopping 5.3 YPA) for 7 TDs and 12 INTs, not to mention his staggering 55.1 QBR and 27 sacks taken (again ...in 6 starts) doesn't make him a 49ers legend?

    Pfffft.... snob.

Nice to be driven around by the greatest football player of all time even if they didn't recognise him.
