Well seems a lot of people think Mendes is a harder test than aldo who knows if there is some truth behind it.

He's 2 and 0 against Aldo . Despite the wrestling argument I just can see the logic of Mendes been a harder fight.McGregors size and stand up fighting is a different level to what Mendes has faced before.

I don't think anyone can guess. on the wrestling thing, mendes could catch a gigantic knee on the way in and it's lights out, ohhh the joy!!

sure I've see tons of underdogs go into matches as if it meant certain death (especially TUF series) only to catch the hyped opponent and finish him quick. sure look at how calvin lashed Uriah hall!! everyone wrote him off and it would seem hall had it in the bag!!

it's a fight and no one can call it, that's the beauty!! I'm confident McGregor can do it but I'd hate to see him made a fool of, I.E tapping in the first round AKA Anthony Johnson!

    Huh?

I don't think he is a bigger test. Aldo has been such a dominant champion, he clearly would be the tougher test.

You cant really say CmcG is on a different level to what Mendes has fought.

Mendes has fought the best of the best. Conor hasn't.

He may be on a different level but nobody knows.

Thats what makes the fight so good.

    Roll on Saturday

    He's brilliant :D

He'd be a absolute PR nightmare for UFC if he was fighting today the **** he comes out with

Mendes is a wrestler that has learned to strike yes he's now very good at it and has knock out power but McG is something different to what Mendes has faced before nobody moves or strikes the way mcg does. Will that be good enough to beat Mendes ? I think it will if he can defend the take down

eh rumble was knocking people out and on a great winning streak. he got dragged into a grind, mostly grounded and when choked, he tapped very quickly as advised by cormier.

id hate the same for McGregor but hey that's how it is! is that clearer?

He didnt tap in the first round though like you said thats what he was getting at.... If anything he nearly won in the first round.

I really think this will come down to McGregor's awareness and control of distance. Given his superior reach advantage (74" to 66"), I can see McGregor landing his shots easily without Mendes getting close enough to land his big shots or get takedowns. If you look at some of McGregor's fights, one of the things that stands out is that he gets into range to hit his shots so quickly and can get back out of range just as quick. Just to compare, Aldo's reach is 70" so McGregor has double the reach advantage over Mendes than Aldo did.

I think it's an easier fight for McGregor than the Aldo fight. In theory it should be much easier for McGregor to nullify Mendes' attack than Jose's.

Not really. If you're referring to the Cormier fight he didn't tap in the first round and I certainly wouldn't describe that as being made a fool of.

Rumble was submitted in the third round not the first.

Although a differant stylistic match up between Mendes and McG it reminds me of the Pourier fight in the build up. Everyone thought Pourier was tough enough to give him a good fight , I think Pourier got too emotionally involved in the fight as well and tried to get at him earlier than he should have, the result was he got knocked out very quickly and underestimated McG striking range , ability and power. I think Mendes will meet a similar faith in the 1st round.

One of the great thing's he does, behind all the thrash talk is get under his opponents skin. Despite what Mendes may say I think he's too involved in this personally and will come out swinging, McG is never involved personally , always controlled , aware and very loose and calm.

I'd love a good 5 round fight here, but my gut says first round KO or TKO.

Seen reporter on MMAjunkie predicting a TUF team Ireland V team USA or Brazil with Conor as coach

i see brenden shaub saying he thinks mcgregor is petrified of facing mendes and he believes mcgregor didn't have an option not to fight mendes , the the ufc said " aldo is out , this is the fight your taking "

also believes john kavanagh etc tried everything to get out of this fight etc

brenden schaub is a complete tool imho anyway so take from it what you will

    edit : heres the link

If you go back and watch embedded 1 you see McGregor meeting the team for the 1st time after the news Aldo was out.
There was no since of panic from there reactions. Win or lose against Aldo he would have to face Mendes sometime.

That's a very good observation, but I feel Mendes is very calm and won't be seeing red going into this fight. He will be just as controlled and calm as Conor IMO. If we can expose the "under the skin" tactics of McGregor I'd hope Camp Alpha and Mendes would be able to do the same.

There's a difference between Poirier and Mendes in that whenever Poirier faces a tough test he seems to buckle under the pressure E.G. Swanson,Chung Sung,McGregor. Where as I'd hope that Mendes has learned a lot from his losses to Aldo, he certainly improved a lot in the second one.

I think this could go the distance but It's so hard to call and an early McGregor knockout wouldn't be all that surprising. Nor would a Mendes TKO.

I think Schaub has taken one too many punches in the head to be honest.

I agree that Mendes will be a tough nut to crack mentally. All of those NCAA wrestlers are. They have all been competing in wrestling since they were very young and have made it to the elite level in high school and college. They have so much experience dealing with trash talk before they even started their MMA careers.

Also very good points there to be fair.

So how is everyone planning on staying awake for the fight? I usually go to bed around 9 then get up before the pre-lims start and have a few bottles...sometimes I stay awake but if I start drinking before 1am there's a risk it'll be lights out before the main event...there's talk of a poker game beforehand.

    What about you lads?

It looks that way .if Mendes couldn't get change from his god like overhand right against aldo how will he do it against mcg on Saturday. The reach advantage would mean Mendes needs to step inside to land that shot leaving himself open for a left cross probably McGregors best shot

If Mendes had been on the World Tour and gone on to do all the media etc with McGregor, I think Conor most definitely would have got into his head and had him at boiling point come fight time. However, with only a couple of weeks and no real media obligations of note together, I can't see it happening.

I'll be tucked up in bed nice and early, say 11pm. Sleep till about 7am grab a cup of tea and watch the card from the very first fight fresh as a daisy. Can't stand staying up all night to be half asleep for the most important fights. Do this for all the cards.

I do this for all but McGregor fights. Too many idiots trying to ruin it for others.
