The scene with the TIE Fighter in the hanger looked class. I'm expecting some of the action scenes to blow my mind after that. But the whole thing from start to finish was excellent.

The best bit about it was the lack of cgi.

In fairness there was a tonne of CGI, it just wasn't a crutch the same way it was in the prequels. I just loved how each shot looked. The CGI and live footage was seamless.

Yeh there was but it defo wasn't as much as it as you'd expect. The explosions in the hanger bay looked awesome.

Star Wars trailer looked good but the prequels were such a disappointment I'm not letting myself get excited.

Batman v Superman trailer out soon and I think a longer Star Wars trailer with the new Avengers film.

Those were obviously the best bits, the rest will be rubbish :)

I'm probably in the minority but I've never ever understood the fuss over Star Wars. I can get why the older generations love it. It was ground breaking in many ways when the original trilogy came along and they were good films. I've no idea how it has spawned such a monstrous and dedicated following, however, especially after the second trilogy which was utter cack.

I'd be fairly similar. I don't think the old films hold up particularly well either.

I mean, I love Star Trek but I think the 70s show is fairly rubbish. If that's all there was I certainly wouldn't be a fan. A product of it's times and groundbreaking then but that doesn't mean much watching it now.

    Ouch....

I suppose it's just a good blend of old fashioned action adventure, fantasy and sci-fi. Because it picks from a few different genres it's a bit more accessible than, say, Star Trek. It's also an incredibly simple story which helps too. And actors/characters like Ford/Solo are genuinely the kind of characters people will warm to. The wise cracking scoundrel has become a pretty common character type (e.g. Iron Man, Guardian of the Galaxy in recent times) and Ford pretty much embodies that.

How many people get into Star Wars as adults though? The films are just as magical to kids now as they were to kids years ago. One if my mates son is obsessed with it. They've the cartoons over the last few years too that help drive that.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. I remember watching the battle of Endor space scenes over and over so much I actually wore down the VHS tape. They were groundbreaking when they came out, but to this day they remain a remarkable achievement in film making. Their pioneering use of high detailed miniatures and blue screen set the standard for the future of visual and special effects. That mind of filmmaking will never be repeated on that scale again.

I wouldn't say they get into it because of it's amazing story or how impressed they are with it more to do with the fact that it's a marketing machine. I've nephews who loved it too but they couldn't tell you much about the storyline, they just think that lightsabers and Ewoks look really cool.

Somewhere along the line liking Star Wars went from geek to hipster, I reckon. I think a lot of people in their twenties now who like it weren't particular fans of it when they were kids. It's a complete anomaly.

And don't worry, Molloy, when I say older generations I mean those who were 18 - 25 when the original came out so 45 - 60 now. I was just about in existence when RotJ came out.

I'm not sure about the marketing thing. The lightsabers and the Force appeal to kids imagination. What kid (boys in particular) doesn't love a bit of sword fighting!?

You may be right about the people in their 20s now I suppose. Kids today have the cartoons and we had the original films. I'm not sure how those in the middle got into it.

I'm a bit obsessed with Star Wars. I'm a massive fan. However, I can see where Buer is coming from. I often re-watch the original trilogy and whilst the magic is never lost on me I do find a lot of that is driven by nostalgia. I mean, Empire as a stand alone is a fantastic bit of cinema, a really strong story line and amazingly shot. No surprise that Lucas had the least involvement in this one. But when I sit down and watch that trilogy with friends who aren't as big fans or who haven't seen it at all then I'm forced to watch it from their perspective. It is very childish, and a little silly.

But when you grew up watching them over, and over, that doesn't really come into equasion. I always say there's a Star Wars for everyone, and by that I mean you take from it what you want. I love the epic, dark undertones of the whole story. No one is really a winner. And a lot of other people have expanded on that feeling through books, games, comics etc. There's a very dark side to the whole universe which makes it that bit more adult. The key to the movies though is the balance of adventure and light and dark (as cliche as that sounds!) which makes it an instantly marketable formula, in that sense there's no wonder it's so popular.

One thing I liked about following the production of the new movie is there's a lot of miniatures being used.

As far as I'm concerned they can bin the entire expanded universe with the exception of this guy...

Ha, you have no idea... Hours and hours spent on that game playing the fan made 'gauntlet' level and modding the hell out of it.

Myself and a friend used to make skins and lightsabre models for it. Total nerdism.
