You may be right about the people in their 20s now I suppose. Kids today have the cartoons and we had the original films. I'm not sure how those in the middle got into it.

I was 12 years old when Phantom Menace came out and I'm 27 now so plenty of kids (including me) thought the prequels where the best thing ever at the time. With my nostalgia glasses on I think the prequels are actually alright although objectively I understand they're ****e.

In any case I was a fan of Star Wars before that, I think I got the boxset of the originals on VHS for Christmas when I was 10 and wore them out.

Star Wars trailer looked good but the prequels were such a disappointment I'm not letting myself get excited.

I've read a good few biographies and stories and by all accounts the original trilogy succeeded in spite of Lucas. By the time the second trilogy came around he was too powerful for anyone to say "no" to basically. It's in good hands at Disney I reckon.

I was 14 when Phantom Menace came out and still thought it was pure dog muck. Actually fell asleep in the cinema during Attack of the Clones and have yet to see the full thing.

Phantom Menace came out when i was 21.

One of my best mates was desperately hinting to all us that for his 21st birthday we should chip in and get him a flight to the US so that he could watch it on its release day in May

We J1'ed in Boston that summer and watched it June which was still before it came out in ireland. I remember leaving the cinema and the pair of us were so deflated it wasn't funny. Then we headed down to Newbury street to get hammered and people watch...

(Ep 1 came out in May 1999 in the US and July 1999 in Ireland)

The best Star Wars story ever told was the original 7,8,9 written by Timoth Zahn, Dark Force rising was absolutely AMAZING.

Of the original trilogy, 4 was an ok film but wonderous at the time, but Empire stands the test of time and is an amazing piece of film making. It's an awesome film no matter what your tastes. It's perfect not just as a stand alone film, but also a more intimate story between the two more "epic" movies of the trilogy.

As to why they have a cult following. Loads of reasons, the films were great at the time and parents love showing them to their kids. They have a lot of "cool" toys, I mean the lightsabre is just such an amazing concept, who doesn't want one and merchandising has been from the very start a massive part of Star Wars (even changing certain parts of the story to allow for better toys..!)

The movies have several iconic moment "no luke, I am your father" has been taken off in so many films Leahs bikini is instantly recognisable and most of the Emperor's dialogue from the final scene in ROTJ is consigned to the memory of vast portions of the earths population.

Beyond this though - for a film aimed at young children and early teens the themes are quite heavy. Obi Wan sacrificing himself in the first film, Luke finding out his father is the source of all evil (and how do kids think about their parents at that age) and all the temptation in the final film for Luke. These are not childish themes but they are delivering in a way that resonates for children and young adults in a way that no other cinema really did at the time.

Personally think it's still one of, if not the greatest trilogy ever made and Empire Strikes Back is one of my top 5 movies.

My nephew (7 years old) absolutely loves Star Wars. Has all 6 on DVD and watches them all the time. He is re-using my old Star Wars toys as well. My sister is obviously doing something right.

Same age myself. I was a massive fan before they came out (got hooked into SW by playing Super Star Wars on the SNES before I even saw the movies when I was like 5).

So I was dying for the prequels. I think though when I saw them I kinda felt I was 'defending' them from all the criticism cuz I wanted them to be as good as the original, but deep down I knew they weren't. When the Trilogy finished I defo felt they were pretty weak, even despite being an absolute fanboi. A lot of it did pander to the fans though, like 'Lets have a gazillion lightsabres and Jedi!', which turned out to be the undoing of the prequels.

Moral of the story, don't let fans write your movie for you... or decide on the faith of your rugby coach. :pac:

I really rate JJ Abrams. I'm not a fan of Star Trek generally but I thought he did a great job with those. I thought Cloverfield was excellent. And even Super 8 was top quality. I thought it nailed what it was trying to do. Looking at the 2 trailers only backs up my faith in the guy IMO.

Ban him. Shoot him. Beat him to death with Jar Jar Binks' arms.

Or throw him in the sarlak pit.

I'm actually not a big fan of Abrams. I think his best film was probably Mission Impossible 3 with the first Star Trek and Cloverfield following this up.

I don't really like his Star Trek films that much, they are ok films by themselves but they are they aren't Trek movies and I don't like in general the way he cuts and edits his films and he really struggles with drama of any kind.

Super 8 was a poor man's Spielberg movie that didn't really work at all.

I also am not a fan AT ALL of Damon Lindelof and I generally find movies where he has had a heavy scripting role tend to try and be too clever but completely fail to convey realistic human reaction or thinking. He has butchered quite a few good concepts and the fact that he works on most Abrams films is always a concern.

I loved Super 8. I thought, yes it was completely unoriginal and an absolute rip off of Spielberg, but it was something this generation were all begging for. Wonderful acting without any distractions of the main event and a real tidy story. The best thing about those movies were the real life element, the kids will be kids element. It's so hard to get right and I thought he nailed the focus there.

I quite like the leaked Batman vs Superman trailer.

Cause Batman is totally cooler than Star Wars.

I thought the prequel trilogy was fantastic at the time, but now I read that they got very mixed reviews!

Well..... if you really want to.....

I'm not a fan of the MI films tbh. And possibly one of the reasons I liked the Trek films so much was because they weren't Trek movies. I know a Trek fan who hates them. but purely because they aren't traditional Star Trek. For me that was a positive.

I thought Super 8 wasn't trying to be anything other than an 80s Spielberg movie like ET. It was an homage to those kinds of films, and a very good one. It's like some of Neil Marshalls stuff. Dog Soldiers is excellent I think, but it lifts dialogue directly from the likes of Aliens ("short controlled bursts!"). As a stand-alone film it has serious issues. Taken in context as an homage to the likes of Aliens though is when it's at it's best. It wears it's influences very much on its sleeve and doesn't pretend to be something it isn't.

Do I remember you saying something over in the owners thread about Spotify controls not working on the lock screen anymore?

I saw it for the first time today at lunch in the gym. Hoping you have a solution and I don't have to go searching back through the thread :D

Ah right, I'm still waiting on my CM12 update, hopefully soon. I'm starting to wonder is the fact that I'm rooted slowing the process down.

I just moved to a different mobile network. They sent me the sim card with a new phone number and I was just about to go through EPP but then I thought... Maybe it's best nobody in the world knows my number?

EDIT: Maybe I should buy an old Nokia 3310, stick my old sim card in that and then leave them to ring out..

My gf is a child of the soil from Clare (hope she doesn't read this). She likes turnip.

There's about as much chance of seeing her in a Leinster jersey as there is in seeing John Hayes in a Leinster tracksuit.

I've actually never really understood that as a kid. Why exactly does he do it? How does he become more powerful than Vader could ever imagine? Did he do it so Luke would despise Vader rather than considering joining him?
