Where'd you get the software and cables from? Also, what price?

I bought a cheap Chinese OBD2 scanner for about €25 and it works perfectly with PA Soft 1.4 for diagnostics and coding lights etc. I had to solder 2 pins together to make it work but it's worth it for the price. Pretty sure it'd work for your 5er too.

I have a bluetooth OBD reader on the way alright from China for the Torque Pro app, it'll do for a while anyway until I decide to get INPA.

I use an ELM327 with Torque Pro, and so does the brother with his F10 520D. 'Tis the bog's dollocks, biy. I also have a cheap little hand-held that I got for ten pound on the Bay of Gee, it works well on all kinds of yokes too. Strictly OBD-II core powertrain only mind, but that's enough for me.

Torque Pro is a nice app for the generic codes and the gauges it gives ya. For deeper diagnostics though, nothing can beat a proper scanner tailored for your car.

Yep, that's what I have coming, will be handy out too if I decide to buy that decrepit e39 in my Park for cheapski and sell on.

Oh yeah, it's pretty much just a stop gap until I bother to get INPA. I'm thinking about making my Raspberry Pi into a OBD code reader too as a small project.

Bit awkward unless the bootup time is reduced in the latest models. Well.. would be ok if you didn't need it booted and reading from the OBD before starting the engine. I wanted more accurate boost readings so I needed the "zero" reading from the MAP before starting the engine.

I never experimented with putting in reset/sleep rather than OFF so that might improve startup too.

I was using it with a small LCD screen - there was only 2 parameters I wanted actual coolant temp and boost so it was ok. One of the touch screens would be nice though.

Tempted to make an improved version.

I have the B+ so it's reasonably peppy but I'll probably upgrade to the Mk.II before I go at the OBDII with it due to the 1GB RAM and Quad Core CPU.

Mmm. Sounds like the Android app with Bluetooth interface does away with a lot of this arsing about, though.

I didn't trust the torque boost readings. Trust my own code and calculations. Torque not far off but doesn't take the "zero" reading in free version at least. Plus it's my hobby. The effort/benefit doesn't work out otherwise.

Oh fair enough entirely, boss. What are you coding in on that thing, out of interest?

Python. The hassle of doing it in anything else certainly wouldn't be worth it!

Python is a nice, elegant thing indeed. Happy hacking! :D

I'm assuming there's a bunch of libraries for OBD communication for Python?

There sure is, well bugger me with a dog-eared old copy of K&R:

I was just bating out the specific AT commands to the bluetooth tty. Very basic stuff.

I found a page on the dawn robotics site handy for getting the bluetooth setup and just used py serial for the comms iirc

Sometimes I wonder why I bother with old cars. They are so much hassle and nothing ever seems to go right. People say that's part of the fun, but there is only so much "fun" one can take really.

Decided to satisfy my curiosity earlier and get it dynoed.

Won't be fun if you buy a lemon. Part of the fun IS hunting an old car that is actually in decent shape.

I've bought quite the opposite of a lemon. I knew exactly what I was buying but I'm just exhausted working on it

Pretty much as per what the specs say, 181bhp and 389NM.

Up to Joe for a remap soon enough I think.

Must be fairly decent car to go as both max torque and max power are so low down the rev range. My old Mivec you had to rev the **** out of the engine.

Sometimes you'd want an engine you can rev though;)
