    Poor choice of words ;)

Many European channels will be showing games and it is quite legal to view these domestically using the relevant viewing cards.

In addition Everton's game is on ITV4 and Setanta and Celtic's game is also on Setanta.

he asked for games in HD and i assume in ROI

Legally is still a poor choice of words - I concede the HD point (ITV4 in SD is poor).

Celtic v Inter looks an absolute cracker on BT HD, The atmosphere I'm sure will be red hot.

That game deserves to be watched only in HD.

*Offtopic* - I see also Nova Sports HD has it on 23.5e too, most likely get that in English for the "Foreign" satellite lads.

Good news for Spurs fans who were left out in the cold by Setanta last week. Also the first time Setanta have put Europa League on Setanta 1 on quite a while.

I paid for the BT Sport & Setanta package, €21.99 per month.
I notice the last couple of days I am not able to access BTSport1 or 2, as I wanted to watch the Feyenoord game tonight. Anyone know why this is?

BT do not have the rights to broadcast the Europa League in Rep of Ireland. Wasn't that game on Setanta Sports too?

PS Haven't they been running a €9.99 per month promotion? Even if that's finished you must be the only person paying the full price :)

That is true, however they will have the rights to show them in ROI from next season.

Unfortunately the Feyenoord game is now over so that's no good to the OP ;)

The 9.99 promotion ends this Saturday.

"To get three months at €9.99* per month subscribe before Saturday 28th February with the promo code '2015' or click here. There's a lot to look forward to:

"To get this great offer call 0818 20 30 40 with the promo code '2015' or subscribe online now."

    BTW it is satellite only.

Celtic v Inter, Everton v Young Boys and Fiorentina v Spurs were shown by Setanta. They have the rights to show all games except the game shown by TV3 but obviously can show a maximum of two 6:00pm and two 8:05pm KOs.

What's the cheapest way to get the Setanta/BT/ESPN package on cable? I'm moving house and am not tied to a provider - basically I just want the package and don't care about any other channels. That and broadband will be enough for my needs.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,986 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The cheapest way to get only the Setanta&BT pack is to use an out of contract Sky box and subscribe direct to Setanta.

If a dish is not an option, with UPC you're looking at min €49pm (Digital Value&Setanta pack), Eircom Setanta pack is €18pm but it's harder to compare directly because as I understand you can't take TV from Eircom without also taking phone and broadband (happy to be corrected if that's not the case).

There are lots of sky boxes on adverts - would they only work with a satellite dish? Hate having to take on basic pack channels and pay for what I don't use.

If that's the case I'll just have to calculate broadband + tv prices for different providers. Have heard bad things about eircom broadband, I've only dealth with UPC and they're grand

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,986 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Yeah, you need a dish for a Sky box to work. It's the only way of taking Setanta only - taking it with UPC or Eircom means taking their basic TV pack as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 972 ✭✭✭snowblind

    Oh well.

The package seems to be available for Magnet's Aertv too, and that looks like a cheap way of doing it. Now I just need to research if Aertv is good enough quality. Could chromecast that to the telly! I just basically need to get Serie A, NHL is a nice plus too though...

When did they they pick up the rights? So much for UTV Ireland saying that they will get new programmes and sports as they become available.

Does that mean they have to pick up every available one off sporting event? Time to be realistic. Also what if UTV Ireland did bid but Setanta outbid them?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,986 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

No idea when they'd picked up the rights, I literally only noticed it in the schedule today.

With the Setanta thread closed down tonight I'll post this update list here -
Setanta fixtures to end of March [Matches Available Without Quotas]

Leicester v Everton [Spurs V West Ham]
    Chelsea v Leicester
    Man City v Stoke
Southampton v Newcastle [Chelsea v Swansea]
    Aston Villa v Arsenal
    Man United v West Ham
    Liverpool v West Brom
Southampton v Sunderland [Arsenal v Hull or Crystal Palace v Chelsea]
West Brom v Crystal Palace [Liverpool v Hull or Sunderland v Arsenal]
Stoke v West Ham [Arsenal v Burney or Chelsea v QPR]
    Man United v Crystal Palace
    Chelsea v West Brom
    Liverpool v Stoke
    Stoke City v Arsenal
Burnley v Southampton [Chelsea v Hull or Leicester v Man City]
    Aston Villa v Manchester United
    Everton v Manchester City
Spurs v Sunderland [Aston Villa v Liverpool or QPR v Man Utd or Swansea v Chelsea]
Sunderlan v Burnley [Liverpool v West Ham or Man Utd v Leicester]
Leicester v Crystal Palace [Aston Villa v Chelsea or Man City v Hull]
    Swansea v Man United
    Man United v Sunderland
    Arsenal v West Ham
Tottenham v Leicester [Newcastle v Arsenal]

    Setanta with Quotas
    United - 5
    Liverpool - 2
    Arsenal - 3
    Man City - 2
    Chelsea - 2

.. Realistically only 14/23 games are probably breaking even/making a profit with enforced quotas. I know the relationship with BT and the upcoming CL will help Setanta greatly but you really would expect Setanta to bid much lower the next time the Irish rights come up for tender.

Just look at the games say a FTA broadcaster/Setanta without quotas could broadcast - 22/23 very solid games/profit generating games from United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool & City... the Premier League clamping down on Setanta has been devastating in terms of quality high profile games at 3pm.

You really would have to wonder why UTV, RTÉ, TV3 or TG4 don't go very hard for these rights - absolutely guaranteed viewers.

Imagine if a FTA Irish broadcaster had this sequence of fixtures @3pm - much better then some packages in the UK on BT/sky from an Irish perspective

    Spurs V West Ham
    Chelsea v Leicester
    Man City v Stoke
    Chelsea v Swansea
    Aston Villa v Arsenal
    Man United v West Ham
    Liverpool v West Brom
    Arsenal v Hull
    Liverpool v Hull
    Chelsea v QPR
    Man United v Crystal Palace
    Chelsea v West Brom
    Liverpool v Stoke
    Stoke City v Arsenal
    Leicester v Man City
    Aston Villa v Manchester United
    Everton v Manchester City
    QPR v Man Utd
    Liverpool v West Ham
    Aston Villa v Chelsea
    Swansea v Man United
    Man United v Sunderland
    Arsenal v West Ham
    Newcastle v Arsenal

    United - 6
    Arsenal - 5
    Chelsea - 5
    Liverpool - 4
    City 3

Games live on Setanta @ 3pm (Announced) [game available without restriction]

Everton v Southampton [Manchester United v Aston Villa]
    Tottenham v Aston Villa
    Hull v Liverpool
    West Brom v Liverpool

New 3pm game list if not subject to restrictions

    Spurs V West Ham
    Chelsea v Leicester
    Man City v Stoke
    Chelsea v Swansea
    Aston Villa v Arsenal
    Man United v West Ham
    Liverpool v West Brom
    Arsenal v Hull
    Liverpool v Hull
    Chelsea v QPR
    Man United v Crystal Palace
    Chelsea v West Brom
    Liverpool v Stoke
    Stoke City v Arsenal
    Leicester v Man City
    Aston Villa v Manchester United
    Everton v Manchester City
    QPR v Man Utd
    Liverpool v West Ham
    Aston Villa v Chelsea
    Swansea v Man United
    Man United v Sunderland
    Arsenal v West Ham
    Newcastle v Arsenal
    Man United V Aston Villa
    Tottenham v Aston Villa
    Hull v Liverpool
    West Brom v Liverpool

    Without Quotas
    Man United - 7
    Liverpool - 6
    Arsenal - 5
    Chelsea - 5
    Man City 3
    Total (to May 1st) - 26/28 games

    With Quotas - Setanta
    Man United - 5
    Liverpool - 4
    Arsenal - 3
    Man City - 2
    Chelsea - 2
    Total (to May 1st) - 16/28 games

Restrictions imposed by the Premier League has almost halved the number of games with the big 5 involved - rights could be a major asset to an alternative Irish broadcaster.

They should have one more game after that, on the 24th, but will only be able to pick very near to the date as Sky (and if they choose to keep a pick, BT - but they didn't last year) must pick first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭Joo0

When they launch the player do you think they will offer a online only version? No need to subscribe on Sky?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,986 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That would be a very good idea, but I wouldn't bet on Setanta to think of it.

Strictly speaking of course you don't need a Sky subscription, you deal direct with Setanta for a subscription and it's not part of a Sky package. You do need to obtain a Sky Digibox if you don't already have one, and a satellite dish of course. Setanta can arrange a Sky viewing card if you don't already have one.

Rang them yesterday and they said their subs are going up because of the CL coverage from BT.

They also said the Setanta HD will be live on sat by summer this year - could be bs though.

    Where you ringing to cancel?

I'm thinking of cancelling for the summer anyway but if there was a discount I'd probably keep it on for UFC.
