Nope... my only option is Eircom (and others that use their infrasctructure) and since I am a direct-connection 2.5km from the exchange, there is nothing positive on the horizon. I'm stuck with 3Mb/s for the forseeable :(

    Rough where are you based

Outside Oranmore, Galway... also I own the house, so no possibility of moving to somewhere better supported.

Sorry if this is off topic guys, but efibre was just made available and installed on my road on Tuesday. Delighted with it, we're getting about 18mg speed which is far better than what our old plan was (pay for 3mg speed and lucky if we got 1.5).

Only problem is the modem. We had this one which had great range, but when they installed efibre they said that it could not used used with fibre power and that we need to use the eircom modem they hooked up for us. It's annoying, because this new modem has terrible range, and while I'm going to get a range extender some time, our old modem was perfectly adequate for our house and even made our terrible download speed just about bearable.

Question is, can we really only use this eircom modem or will my old modem work/ can we buy another better modem/wireless router to work with efibre?

EDIT: Just read the description of the router on the link I provided, says it's for fibre optic broadband, so i assume it should actually work? :o

You could turn off the wireless in the Eircom modem, then add a router after it with strong wireless and connect to that.

Really you should bridge the F1000 to the AC1750. If you have a high end router you may as well use it.

Have a search on here for "F1000 Bridge" and youll find instructions.

The rest of the planned rollout in its entirety is now available for viewing here:

    http://www.eircom.net/efibreinfo/map

All areas planned April to June 2015 have been pushed out to July to December 2015. I presume some of those will be brought forward along with some of the Jan-Jul 2016 ones.

What on earth is the regulators reason for delaying this for so long? All it does is harm the consumer who's screwed without it.

Its comreg and all the line operators that have to agree, not just comreg. They're slow but not this slow, so its likely somebody won't agree to the regulation changes.

After cutting contract I'll be with UPC 240mbp tomorrow

What in the name of, will you need 240 meg for?

20+ and decent upload would, I'd have though would be more than enough.

Unless you really really impatient ! or have a family of 10 !

Or downloading thousand of films ??

    Mark.

Some people like to watch films in good quality.

Decent blu-ray quality video can be up to 40gb for 2 hours, 4k video even more and gamers are used to downloading full games these days.

Not everyone is happy with a low bit rate netflix stream and 700mb dvd rips.

    It's also future proofed

15 years ago that would've been "What in the name of will you need 1Mbit for??"

I understand it is one Operator that has a big influence on ComReg that is blocking this.

    Who?

    UPC?

    Digiweb/Smart?

Other big players like Vodafone, Sky etc would be reselling it and using the service.

Sky took over BT customers, some of them are unbundled.

I've been told that agreement has been reached on eVDSL and Sky were the main objectors.

Well if it was Sky, I can guess why.

It seems to have taken Sky almost 2 years to start selling VDSL. I'm guessing they didn't want another 300,000 people getting eVDSL and signing up for 12 and 18 month contracts with Eircom/Vodafone until they were also ready to launch their own VDSL product.

    Basically a delaying tactic.

    Purely speculation on my part.

Sure, every extra person who gets access to high speed broadband now has extra options for TV services, Netflix, IPTV, etc.

It certainly helps break down Sky's monopoly.

The ESB FTTH rollout and National Broadband Plan will likely have an even greater effect as they target areas that don't have UPC and were formally pretty much Sky satellite monopolies, but Sky has little power to interfere with them fortunately.

Interesting information in Eircoms November future plans document:

Basically there are currently a small percentage of VDSL cabinets that haven't had vectoring enabled on them yet, because the cabs have two DSLAMS in them due to a large number of lines connected to them. It looks like from April, Eircom will be enabling node level vectoring, so these cabs will also enjoy the benefits of vectoring. More good news :)

im on one of these extended vdsl cabs with the extended tops, thats great news as eirom have my line locked to 50/15, maybe ill see the 70/20 my router claims its able to do

My area is now showing as July to December. I hate this crappy broadband!!!!

Any chance we could get a hint of ESB's rollout plans and timeframe?

The roll out certainly seems to be slowing down that's for sure!
