This entire mess is on Phil Emery. He is the one doing the drafting, signing free agents, hiring coaches and signing contracts. This is a disgrace. This is the most passionless Bears teams that I have seen in my lifetime.

He had a pre-game press conference where he did everything to distance himself from the Aaron Kromer mess. You have to read his comments in the article below.

"In respect to this decision, the way we’re structured, it was Marc’s decision. It is that way contractually. It is also that way in terms of how we’re set up. We’re set up in a top-down, very much a military fashion. We always want to deal with problems as they come at the lowest level possible before we involve other people, which is did in this context. There’s no Alexander Haig moves pulled during this situation. For our fans that don’t remember the situation with President Reagan was shot, that Alexander stepped in and said, ‘I’m in control,’ when in fact he wasn’t. So, you know, this was Marc’s decision because that’s the way we were set up.

As an Eagles fan Ive not been that happy since sunday night football.

But my god the Bears are a bon fire of a team.

According to some twitter timelines I am reading from last night, by the time local media was notified that Cutler's press conference was underway it was over before they even arrived.

Even the media relations team can't do their job :o

    That's unfair to bonfires.

They knew well he was going to get torn to shreds if the whole media were at the press conference.

Last night was just unreal. I mean, noone had any idea what they were doing.

When the most exciting prospect throughout a season is Black Monday things are bad.

There is usually a set schedule for the post game press conferences. Generally, Cutler follows Marc Trestman. Cutler saw the opportunity to go into a nearly empty room, sat at the podium and was literally gone in sixty seconds.

This was more about Cutler avoiding the media than anything that happened with the media relations team.

I wish I had the audio for you to hear. He is in full scramble mode trying to cover his ass. It was embarrassing. I've never heard an executive of the professional sports franchise ramble like that (and I've known/met quite a few of them).

And he can't get fined for not talking to the media because he technically showed up and there were some reporters present. Genius.

Why can't he be that smart when he has a football in his hands. :(

I've just read the whole thing, the extract you posted doesn't get better one the context is there. All I took from it is 1: Phil doesn't exert his authority on major issues 2: he doesn't take responsibility for anything that happens as a result and 3: there are no consequences for any actions detrimental to the team.

Oh, and 4: if you keep Phil "we learn from our mistakes" Emery, all the other possible moves in the coaching staff will be a waste of time, because that level of spineless hand washing is indicative of a problem, not a person who can solve a problem.

The rest was just gibberish... :-)

Watching the game on Setanta now, absolutely disgraceful performance.

Big pinch of salt because it's Dan Bernstein, but hopefully this is from a real source (if he has any).

Oh that would be too good to be true. No way I'm getting my hopes up on that. Harbaugh time?

There are teams that will be willing to give up a lot more than we would for Harbaugh. I would be shocked if he ended up in Chicago.

So would I, wouldn't expect it at all and given that we have do much rebuilding to do, first round draft picks just can't be sacrificed. Main thing for next head coach would be that he would be proven.

Bears will play NFC West at home next year and AFC West on the road

NFC West is a horrible division to have to play. Always seems to have at least two strong teams in it, and in all probability will have four.

AFC West isn't much better but at least the Raiders are in it, although at our current rate that isn't much reassurance.

But we can't get any worse...(although I seem to remember saying that last year)

Wondering what the logic is...Cutler on the trade block, or just Trestman trying to prove a point?

@dabearsblog: "One thing this move does confirm: Trestman is out at end of the season. He doesn't make this move if he thought there was chance to return."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,729 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Now we'll start making our receivers run routes further than 3 yards down the field and win out, losing draft positions and pissing me off even more. Watch.

The Giants have a winnable game against the Rams next week and the Falcons have two winnable games against the Saints and Panthers. We have a good chance of moving up to 7th if we just lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,335 ✭✭✭padraig_f

@AlbertBreer: "With, as @AdamSchefter reported, Cutler out and Clausen in as Bears starting QB, message received around the NFL is Cutler's on the block."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,335 ✭✭✭padraig_f

Could mean Emery is gone too, can't reflect well on him less than a year after giving Cutler $54m.

Ah **** the draft pick, I'll give Emery one thing, he can draft (minus mclellin). I'm just sick of being embarrassed. And I don't fancy watching the ****ing Detroit lions embarrass us either. I'd rather drop down the board.

As for doing Cutler, well, it's deserved, but yeah it's a sign trestman is gone. But in terms of trading him, I dunno exactly what it achieves. Last year was the chance to trade him. Nobody will take his cap hit now (and incidentally I don't see him as, by any means, the biggest problem with the team, not even in the top three). I'd still let him go because the future of the team had to lie elsewhere.

My only problem is I'm not elated, and we really shouldn't be. Two years ago we were back to a rebuild within reason. Now we are at square one. That's not where we were then, and looking at other square one teams like the jets, raiders, jags, browns, Vikings, there is no guarantee that it will be anything like a quick recovery, or whether the recovery will happen at All.

I mean, a tear down is what I want, but we're not looking good any time soon. So a few draft places? Grand, but we need extra picks. And in the meantime, ndamokong suh and the rest of those tinkers laughing at the bears isn't worth it. Course we'll lose anyway but just not being humiliated is vital for the sense of worth in the younger players. If we get a seventh pick, (is that the highest pick we can get by the way?) is there anything to be said for trading back? We need lots of players, two firsts would be better than one top ten IMO unless there's a serious prospect right there. Course it looks like we will be looking for a new qb now, and we surely haven't the money. I dunno...keep Cutler as a holdover?

Rumours already the Titans would want him, we were interested last year, we have a lot of cap space this year but do we want to blow a lot of that in Cutler? I'm not so sure

I think if anyone comes in for Cutler, a re-negotiating of that contract will have to be part of the discussion.

But someone will take a stab at him. Too many teams needy at QB.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,052 ✭✭✭poldebruin

It's hard to believe that the Bears are talking about rebuild mode with Cutler, Forte, Jeffrey, Marshall and Bennett on the team. Personally I think benching Cutler is a d**k move by Trestman. He knows he's gone. Maybe he thinks that Clausen can come in and run his system (McCown-like) to prove he's worth another year. Other than that, I can't see the reasoning behind it.

If it's with a view to trading Cutler (and that's a big if....cap number and guaranteed money is going to be a huge obstacle to moving him) it hurts his value. Nobody is going to pay anything for a QB you have shown you don't want. If Clausen does well it hurts Cutler's trade value even more and you are stuck with the most expensive backup QB in the history of the game - for years.

I still like Cutler's talent, and to be honest, from what I have seen of the Bears this year, their Defense is the biggest problem. Cutler has been performing at or in and around, Cutler-type-level. His QPR for the year is at or near the best of his career. I wonder if the Bears could look at bringing in Mike Shanahan to try and get the best out of Cutler if they decide to stick it out with him?

It really is a huge mess though....from player performance, salary cap management, coaching and ownership.

This move makes no sense. It hurts Jay’s trade value, pulls the curtains on Emery’s career and kills any semblance of morale left in the locker room.

Still though, I bet my left nut that someone will take Jay if we put him on the trade block. Reports this week have sounded out Buffalo, Washington and Tennessee.

Where we go from there. God knows.

Bro, Clausen is terrible. I mean, the guy can't play.
