agreed - it should have an entrance only at the top (opposite service station) and exit at the bottom end

Would agree, in my view it should be manatory to use the roundabout in full, I see Buses cutting in before the roundabout which only adds to the risk of an accident,

Anyone else had problems with the zebra crossing on Queen Street, just up from Mary Street. I walk this road and cross there at least 4 times a week and I'm amazed at the amount of times cars just go straight through, without even acknowledging me trying to cross. Its terrifying. Look first, don't assume the cars will stop.

After thought, I cannot understand why they do not extend the Fethard Road and make a level crossing on the railway line, keeping in mind there is always someone on duty at the signal box when trains use the line which is currently four every day. All in all I sincerely hope they keep the line open.

I thought you'd know that there was in fact a level crossing at the station.
You once could go up Thomas Street, across the railway by level crossing, on past what is now the Railway bar which was the main road to Fethard.
The road then went past what is now the new Church and continued until it merges with the existing Fethard Road

Sorry I am not old enough to remember that, all I remember is the slip road to the Railway Bar, a field opposite it and a rather large house owned by the Bowe family to which a stream ran to the western side of it. The house in fact was called "Streamvale" my memory of same only goes back about sixty years.

Neither am I

Many years ago when I came to Clonmel first I was up the mountains looking down on Clonmel and saw how Thomas St seemed as if it was going on straight.
I saw an old ordnace survey map which confirmed it.

Thank you for reply, a friend of mine and a great friend of the town was indeed able to confirm to me that this old level crossing did exist and in fact there was a court yard quite near that was used as a cark park. Of course in that time the Line beteween Clonml and Fetard was still operational.

The question now "Would the be putting a level crossing there now be of benefit, bearing in mind the number of pedestrians living on the northern side of the town, of couses this would mean that there would be three roundabouts within a very short distance of each other.

Anything that could help pedestrians would be helpful as much of the housing on the north side is social housing where famalies cannot afford cars.

It also stikes be to call for the erection of a footpath from the Fethard Road to Clonmel Race Course on the Northen side of the road.........this could lead to better safety crossing this busy road and also be an incentive to good health as maybe it would lead to the Walking Track at the Clonmel Racecourse who would not have to cross the road from the Northern side.

Let's not just talk about safety and obesity, let's, do something about it.

There's already a footpath on the Tesco side of the road. I think it would be madness to put in a second one as the road is quite narrow there already.

Just before the Fethard roundabout when coming from Tesco there is a break in the traffic island and cars regularly stop to allow people to cross. I doubt anyone's waiting more than a min or two to cross that junction.

If you put in a northern footpath people would try to cross instead at Tesco causing a much more dangerous situation.

I do agree there is a path on the Tesco side, there are pedestrians working the Chadwicks, The call Centre, The Cash and Carry and other places including Carrigeen Business Park, A child care centre there where parents may wish to walk their toddlers on fine mornings. Clerks working in County Council offices and there are sites availabe for further Industrial and Commercial expansion. Walking is the best exercise you can partake in and the more footpaths the better. In fact there should be footpaths on both sides on a Major route like the N24 inside the town speed limit areas.

I'd actually prefer to have a pedestrian crossing at the Fethard roundabout and another at the Renault garage roundabout to access those businesses you mentioned so people can use the existing footpath on the Tesco side and also safely cross the road to it.

I love the new cycle, footpath on the bypass and commend the council for putting it in. It always seemed busy during the summer.

In fairness to the council they did have a proper pedestrian crossing there unfortunately it was prone to vandalism and they stopped maintaining it.

I'm not sure I'd walk there at night even with lighting. It's very isolated with too many places for someone to hide and drag you into the ditch.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I'll stick to my route of the town during the winter

Do you wait for a break and signal your intent to cross? Some people think that they can just walk out at a pedestrian crossing. Not saying you do

Oh I stop and look, not sure what you mean by "signal". I don't put up my hand or anything. In fairness, its also up to drivers to watch the road, its a good zebra crossing in that it has a ramp, lights, etc, you definitely know, as a driver, that its there. The trouble is speed mostly, by the time they see me they are travelling too fast to stop. Lots of drivers put up their hands, as they whiz by, acknowledging me with an apologetic wave, but it really is a danger spot. Its got to the stage where I go as far as the lights at Cashel Road and cross there, much safer.

just put your foot out slightly to make it obvious you want to cross, not out on road is what i meant. You are right drivers should watch the road too. But I have seen many people who come up to a pedestrian crossing -not that one specifically-and run out without checking. Just because a driver does not see it or is going too fast does not excuse a pedestrians duty of care to themselves, just as a driver cannot knock down someone who is crossing when the light is green for the driver
