I do not want to pay for water in any way

So in the first paragraph you say "No need to increase taxes at all" and then in the second paragraph you say @places an increased tax burden" - which implies the tax for certain people will increase, which contradicts your first statement.

So you are going to increase tax for business/companies/corporations who already pay water taxes as a commercially body - so that they can pay to fix the leaks - so a double tax - correct?

You want people who earn more to pay the tax - correct? - which actually goes totally against the Right2Water groups beliefs - the group who claim 150k people marched in support of their beliefs. - correct?

Water charges are already a double taxation so a moot point there, and the amount of tax dodging going on with large corporations would pay for a new water infrastructure a 1000 times over so again moot point

Ability to pay is just that protects the most vulnerable but doesn't exempt them from paying everyone pays something better system then water charges trying to scrape every last cent from people tbh

Water charges are not a double taxation, you pay tax that previously went towards our water infrastructure but it doesn't anymore its not a hard concept to understand especially since the vast majority of people got a tax break of equal size to the payment this year and will likely get more next year.

Whatever your opinions on IW which some of which i also agree with the double payment argument is broken logic.

Now you are paying for a service utility. Is every other service utility a double taxation as well?

It's nice that you're able to admit, that other than a small percentage, IW protestors are a bunch of whiners.

Keep making those baby steps. You'll get there in the end.
he didn't admit anything of the sort. stop making things up

the level of antipathy, animosity and the complete lack of compassion by some recent posts here is shocking (Barely There and Seamus). There was nothing nauseating and self pitying about Donna Harnetts letter. It was exceptionally articulate and well written. Its hard not to empathise with her.

She probably bought a house back when houses prices were at an all time high. That took 2 full time salaries to repay the mortgage. All young couples were told they had to get on the property ladder as prices would keep rising. There was no choice if they wanted to provide their kids with a home to grow up in. Thats hardly an unusual aspiration - its what everyone wants for their kids. Its called life.
The market crashed, negative equity yet still paying a huge mortgage, loans and bills to pay, creche fees rising , no chance of taking part time work, nothing left at the end of each week. Why wouldn't she feel is this it? Kids are being reared in a creche and they have nothing to show for their lives.

And you can knock me all you like/ say what you want to me but I don't care. Nothing can hurt me anymore.
I am 53 - well educated and worked in banking years ago. Lost that job, no bank pension, lost my house, lost a child to cancer, lost my marriage. I took tons of low paid jobs rather than sign on.
I reared my other 2 kids alone and put them through college. Last year they both emigrated - neither of them wanted to but they needed jobs. I am now alone. One year ago I went on the dole and now work in a CE Scheme . This is not "whinging" - this is fact!
It's the first time in my life I received Social welfare. Every day in work I deal with homeless people, bankrupt people, suicides, mental health issues, abuse, emigration etc. So I kinda know what I'm talking about. I'm thankful I have a job. I've lived both lives. I see people at breaking point, in tears, unbearable stress levels, suicidal. I'm glad I can help, listen and advise. The most important thing in life are your health, your kids, family & friends, treating people with compassion and respect .

Dont judge people because you really dont know their lives. Unless you have walked that walk you're not qualified to talk that talk! I cant understand the scathing comments and bitterness.

(I was contributing to this thread as even though I agree with paying for water I dont agree with Irish Water. However some of the animosity and downright ignorant posts here make me just want to walk away from the whole topic now. Would people be so brave to say some of these comments to a persons face ?)

This is such a beautiful post and I just wanted to wish you some good wishes.

My heart fell tonight that people could interrupt something meant to commemorate our fallen heroes.

Absolutely gutted we could do that to ourselves.

Did those people in 1916 not also fight against what they deemed to be injustice?

They have the right to protest they do not have the right to hijack the soldiers of 1916 image and desecrate any event we holdin their honour.

    That attitude is frankly abhorrent.

They would turn in their graves when they see what FG/FF/LAB have done along with the police force of this our beloved country !
They fought for our freedom , now we can't even protest ( peacefully ) because of an injunction by IW .

The injunction wasn't against peaceful protest, it was against intimidation against innocent workers.

What is abhorrent is that the heroes of 1916 were laughed and sneered at by the fools on the Govt side at the time, just like on here.

    http://businessetc.thejournal.ie/stock-market-recession-1772380-Nov2014/

This was on the journal site yesterday. It's about a firm that preticted the crash that happened in 1929 which resulted in a depression. The same firm is predicting trouble ahead for the US in 2015 (which will have knock on effects for us, no doubt).

I've been saying it for a few years now, with so many countries - the US, Iceland, the UK, some other European countries - Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, France - experiencing similar problems to us - bank problems, deficits, debts and large unemployment, I reckon this is a depression which governments aren't telling their nations about. The problem is very, very deep and is going back to the way money is made. To fix this they are just hammering the backs of people. Ordinary people and citizens of these countries that do not have the money to fix something so deep. The only people that have this money are the very top bankers. Like the federal union. The very top richest people in the world are bankers. The way money is made, it creates debt slavery and this is what's happening to many countries.

Something or someone will absolutely break and snap at some stage. It probably won't happen yet for years to come. Depressions only end in war.

Australia is also at the start of a slowdown.

I saw it on the news - but just look at the picture in the link u sent

A guy holding a sign that says "Gardas main concern" - now tell me what that has to do with water charges or Irish water - nothing - and like another poster said, those protesting can't even agree to protest about the main issue, it's like "anyone can join protest - get it all off your chest".

so now you know what they wanted??? Do you not think that many would have wanted us to get freedom in the 6 counties?

In other threads i've seen you post "life's not fair" - well how about applying that to here, and people just have to pay the tax, or is it a case that you can only use that argument when your making the statement?

Funny how RTE said it was a Water Protest then.
Did you not read it and only look at the pictures?

LoL Maryanne84 i have seen a lot of video evidence of " peaceful protesters " being arrested for " STANDING STILL " with absolutely no hint of intimidation to any IW workers !

Explain that to me , is that your explanation of this so called injunction?

They were no better than FG/FF/LAB/SF. Worse even, they were just terrorist outlaws.

Who didnt win any freedom for us - no problem protesting were we still part of the UK.

So they won you a lack of freedom to protest. Well done them.
