I remember my first track race a few years ago and all the guys were standing around with either no watch or a retro Casio watch and I was there with my Garmin for a 1500m race and felt like a twat. Haven't worn one since! It's not necessary anyway and it's much more accurate to just work out your per lap pace and check it at every 100m or 200m.

But more seriously, try to minimize the break and have your drink on the run and you'll be fine.
