    What's your opinions on this? I'v been driving petrol cars all my life but my neighbour recently bought a 00 passat 1.9tdi and for the first time ever he's been using the ''green stuff'' Apparently he's saving a fortune and doesnt really care about the damage to the engine as it's only a 00 yoke. He says he only needs it for a year or so.

    Have many people here used it and if not would you?

    We have a tank at home full of green diesel, for the farm. I wouldn't even consider putting it into the car. Not worth the risk. Surely the first time you would put green in, you would meet the customs dipping. Isn't the fine something like €2,000?

    I put purple food colouring into the tank once...

    Putting Green diesel into his fuel tank won't do much or any harm to his car. Its the chemical process to remove the green dye is what can cause damage to engines.
    The damage will be the problems he will have if his fuel tank is checked by Custom and Excise by the side of the road and the penalties he will incur.

    The scaremongering that they've mixed with the diesel wont do any damage.

    same as normal diesel

    +1,

    Green diesel is 100% safe in any diesel engine. The only risk you run is breaking the law.

    Its poorly washed diesel (removing the dye) that destroys engines as they dont remove the acids that were mixed in with the the green diesel that were added to breakdown the dye.



    Actually thinking about it, green diesel its probably the best stuff you can use in a modern diesel engine as you know it is not washed in any way.

    Out of interest, what are the chances of actually ever getting dipped? Do they target people that they know own a green diesel tank, or is it literally just pull over a random diesel car and test it? Because I know of plenty of people who drive diesels and have never heard of anyone being stopped and tested.

    I think you have more chance of getting dipped out in the boondocks. I remember in the old days a lot of farmers would have a big old diesel tank in the yard for tractors and what-not, and they wouldn't be above putting a drop into the oul' Bluebird. This was around the time Revenue figured out beefy fines was the only way they could try to deter this.

    I went through a stage of being dipped monthly.

    Haven't been done in a while though.

    Where was this happening to you? Was it just a case of being randomly pulled over and tested, or have they reason to suspect that you might be up to something (ie have you/a family member got a farm with green diesel tank?)

    My experience of driving is mostly rural, and to be honest I dont think I know of anyone who has ever been stopped and tested.

    Random checkpoints on the N2 mainly but a few times in Swords and once in Blanch.

    All checkpoints though. Not out just for me.

    They love the N2. Nice straight road and bog all turn offs.

    Used to be regular tests on the N4 between Kinnegad and Kilcock before the M4 opened. Usually in the mornings and targeting builders/commercial vehicles. I have not seen a checkpoint in years now.

    I have often seen customs dipping tanks. but mine was never checked. I reckon they profile people / cars and check at random

    its all kerosene. white kero not red. and a litre of cooking oil..

    possibly a silly question, but do they literally just dip a yoke into your filler cap/hole yoke?

    if that IS the case, then surely if you were making a habit of it, you could just have a pipe into a closed bottle at the bottom of the filler hole with regular diesel in it and have a 2nd filler hole into the tank in the boot to fill secretly?

    Many years ago, when I worked weekends in a South Dublin filling station which had a marked diesel pump, we had a regular customer who had exactly this arrangment.

    Or just stick a second tank into the wheel well and drain that leaving the "clean" stuff in the main tank.

    A tell tale was the rear cluster above the exhaust was generally darker when a motor ran on Green / Red.

    It was smokier.

    Was once stopped in a transit van years ago, the sample came out as clear as water so of I went about my business.

    This was in NI come to think of it!

    Couldn't see that happening. They'd have to have a mechanic ready too.

    ever touch a fuel filter on a transit. Instant airlock. And its a hooor to get right.
