Thanks vandriver for your help. This is a Sparrowhawk I photographed last week in my garden in Dublin. He was eating a Great tit.

Males have striking little colours on them. Wonder does the males get chosen by females by the brightens colours like some other bird species

Hey everyone. I've never posted to this thread, I'm usually in the photography section. This thread is brilliant and I'll definitely be back!!

I'm in India at the moment and I'm surrounded by incredible birds. Some seem extremely tame. I have a lens with a max zoom of 55mm so I can only get a shot when they are REALLY close. The first bird I know is a black kite:

    13236167243_19cb4c55a2_c.jpg
Eyeing up a Meal by obrano, on Flickr

This bird could be a black kite (I can only ID them from flight) but I really have basic knowledge on birds. An ID/confirmation would be appreciated. This bird allowed me to get within half a meter of it (I inched to make sure it was completely comfortable with me being there, I didn't want to disturb it. It seemed more than happy and it didn't even flinch). I have a close up of the upper body and head. If anyone is interested, I can upload. Here's a full body pic:

I think the kingfishers on the Liffey at Lucan Demesne will see me to my grave!

There are 2 of them ( a happy couple?) and now and again you see them fly by together at breakneck speed- only then to disappear from sight!

If ever one of them stops it is ‘miles’ away!

    See here ( 400mm lens)

Maybe someday I’ll get a Brendan quality photo!

^^^^those birds in the demesne are addictive. i know of 3 perches they use regularly, but i dont have a decent zoom lens yet. trying to get a second hand 250 on adverts at the moment to capture them. i see the feckers everyday but never photoed them.

Remember they're breeding birds guys - keep a good distance from the nest and try to minimise disturbance - disturbance means lower chance of breeding success. Avoiding disturbance means higher chance they'll fledge chicks successfully - and more Kingfishers to admire and photograph later in the year!

(not an accusation by any means - just making sure everyones mindful of the fact :) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,424 ✭✭✭bernard0368

As openyoureyes, has mentioned please be careful lads as it is coming to the breeding season for the kingfishers.
If you are going to photograph near the nests you need a licence from NPWS. I have no idea of where the birds in St Catherines park nest, so I cant offer any advise there.
The Kingfisher image I put up above was taken well away from the nest and I came across her more by chance than by planning. So keep your eyes open and one day you will get that shot.
