As was you statement saying trump is looking to hold THE Open!!!

I'd say he could "try" in Scotland.

I'm not saying the Irish Open (never mind anything bigger) should go to Doonbeg but I would expect Trump to be interested. Ideal way to promote the course to his target audience and not much competition fir the sponsorship rights. He would need to pay appearance money but with a date shortly before the Open and the right offer he could attract a decent international field.
If be surprised if he doesn't take at least a serious look at it.

I've no doubt that's his goal with his new links over there but talking about doonbeg holding it is nonsense

    Exactly correct.
Dont be surprised to see an exhibition round also this year with Woods / Johnson / Mickelson / Stricker / Kuchar etc in Doonbeg

It can take a while to put those events together but yes, that sort of thing could happen and easier than staging a tournament.

    An exhibition for who?
You really don't know Donald Trump or his business model.
He is going for very high end, exclusive members club. They have no interest in going to an exhibition as they can buy a Pro-Am round with any of the above. Its only the Public that have interest in going to see the above golfers.

The rich want to play with these guys not go to watch them lol

Who said Trump wont sell tickets to participate in this event?
You could fill the entire timesheet with an offer to share the course with any of those USA legends.
And these are the type of individuals that will then cough up the 100k to join Trump International.
The hellipad is gonna be busy, imo.

Sell tickets? for what - revenue?
Again this is not his style.
Look at all his other properties, exclusive, private, wealthy members.
Not tickets to expo's or trying to host micky mouse tournaments. he is a property developer of properties and clubs for high wealth individuals.

I'm sure he will want to promote it and TV is the medium. The experience from Adare and Old Head doesn't suggest there's enough business in the US to make it work. He will need the European market too.
He got it cheap and I reckon it was an opportunist decision rather than part of his long term strategy. Selling golf in the West of Ireland is different to selling it in Florida or New York.

Given the amount of space required to write it and the time needed to actually say "Trump International Golf Links, Ireland" how about we just call it something short and simple... like "Doonbeg"

I'm booked in for 2 nights over Easter. Considering cancelling it now.
Not a fan with what he's done in Aberdeen so don't want to pay money to the taste-less gimp.

Anyone who can't manage to say Trump International is unlikely to have accumulated the wealth needed to join or play there.
Unless they inherited it of course.

Ha, I said the same thing on Twitter... saves characters.

Big spread in Irish Times today. My dislike for the man has multiplied - he is comparing Scottish wind farms to the Pan Am 103 bombing.

    Will read that.

I think we would have the same views on him.

But, the way golf has gone in Ireland and with a much needed new boost required in golf tourism.

Should we be willing to accept investment with open arms. It is an interesting dilemma.

I'm sorry somebody in Ireland hadn't the balls to take it on.

people will look at this as hope and a sustainable development , I fear it is a get
    Rich quick scheme.

Oh he is totally obnoxious but I doubt you will hear a bad word said about him around West Clare.
    Not yet anyway.

Trump....isn't he one of the leading lights in the campaign to prove that Obama was born abroad?
. Let's hope our politicians won't be star-fu***d into bringing in legislation to open huge casinos. I think it's a distinct possibility.

The best solution to Doonbeg's woes.
Trump will elevate this to a new level - he'll have the almighty US market eating out of his hand before long.
It is now, within a matter of hrs, one of the most recognised golf courses on the planet.
I also think Trump will buy up large sections of Clare for development.

Donald is that you? Or have you just been watching too much of the US apprentice.

A place like Doonbeg was always going to be bought, it was simply a question of who bit off the receivers' hand first. I'm not surprised at all that Trump jumped in - it's perfect for him and he'll probably do very well with it. I see more houses in Doonbeg's future.

It was and will remain an exclusive resort. Knowing how Trump operates it will become even more exclusive. Realistically, Trump's purchase may change very little - it will always be out of reach for the majority of Irish golfers (not that Trump will care), but now that it has Trump's name all over it (literally) most of that Irish majority may aspire to play elsewhere.

I had hoped to get an Inside The Ropes gig down there in March, but won't be trying now.

this project is doomed from day 1 :)

I'm not saying the project is doomed though Ernest. No one can know that yet because we don't know the business plan or what the likely visitor package is going to be.

Given his financial success to date, I think we can assume he's not buying this place for the craic. He wants to make a return so it will be in his interests to ensure there's a good, high-end product for his customers. He's not in the €20 green fee game so anyone looking for cheap rounds should be disappointed (quite rightly too, in my view), so I think this is a good thing.

My only quibble is the name. Why he feels the need to keep the Trump name in the title is beyond me. Maybe its a touch of arrogance on his part, but I think I'd baulk at putting my own name on a hotel. Its just not an Irish thing...

    Good luck to him though.

all of their high profile assets use the name 'Trump'
common sense and not a big issue imo
