I cant imagine him changing the name of it, might add to it but I reckon it'll be still called Doonbeg GC

Filling the timesheet with punters at €20 a head isnt going to cover the costs of a resort like Doonbeg.

Where did I, or anyone else else for that matter, mention €20 a head?

    Your talking rubbish here greebo.....

If the European Tour told Donie that access was an issue with hosting the Irish Open he'd just just build a 4 lane carriageway into the place, mostly through people's houses.

Halving the green fee was proposed as a solution, it might as well be 20 quid.
We are not talking about deerpark here yunno.

This is bad news. Watch the documentary 'You've Been Trumped' if you have not seen it already, and see how this guy steam rolled into the Aberdeen country side and bulied and intimidated to get his own way. Would not ever play any of his courses even if I was paid.

    What's half of €125?

By all means, take your time....

The way things are going, he won't be the last conglomerate to buy a golf course here on the "cheap" either.
Can't see how it's a bad thing for either the staff or locals so long as local authorities keep tabs on his long term proposals.
But in this country of brown envelopes it's a big ask.

I'd say the local councillors are creaming themselves tonight

The best solution to Doonbeg's woes.
Trump will elevate this to a new level - he'll have the almighty US market eating out of his hand before long.
It is now, within a matter of hrs, one of the most recognised golf courses on the planet.
I also think Trump will buy up large sections of Clare for development.

Not sure why you are acting all pissy, I'll assume it's because you now realise that your idea makes no sense. Do you really think they can maintain that facility by halving the greenfees? That people will travel across the world and pay top dollar for a hotel suite and then have to queue behind you and your mates for a round on a packed course who's standards have dropped to that of a €62.50 ( thanks calculator app) course?I think you are way off the mark tbh. You can't be exclusive and cheap.

Well what would be good news - it closing? It's different from Scotland in that the course and associated buildings are already built. I agree that what he did over in Scotland was very wrong but it shouldn't be the case here. I can only see positives from the sale.

Mount Juliet is a luxury golf destination, renowned the world over, having held Irish Opens, WGC events, etc... Its crawling with American tourists every summer.... BUT, you can routinely get out there for 60-80 euro and they accommodate societys of 25+ for €50-60. I don't expect Doonbeg to be cheap, but being realistic would be a start....
Its worth noting that in Portugal its not uncommon for some of the top courses there to have a discount rate for "locals" who hold the Portuguese equivalent of a GUI card. Tourists still pay top dollar.
Seeing how you're an expert in such matters, why don't you explain what is wrong with Doonbegs model & why it went into receivership?

Anyone who thinks Mount Juliet is in the same league as Trump International is clearly delusional.
Trump has character in spades. Mount Juliet is just another parkland, with some careful manicuring and some nice shrubs.

unless Trump decides to redesign pretty much the entire golf course, then the snails will be fine..

    I despise the individual.

But , do you know what - this might work.

You can imagine the Scottish and Irish golf experience with Trump. It will be crass and tasteless.

But, it looks like a bargain for a man who has a global market, and can promote golf in the west coast of Ireland in a big way.

So not for me, but will work for him and the local economy. Also, will be spin off for Shannon Airport and west coast hotels.

The Irish open - crazy idea imo.

why is hosting the irish open a crazy idea?
    it makes perfect sense.
accommodation and logistics will be challenging, but all issues along these lines can be overcome.
Would be amazing to host the tournament on the west coast - if I know Trump tho, hes probably thinking bigger - The Open

Good news for Doonbeg, Shannon Airport and potentially local hotels.

Bad news for people who live nearby assuming that Trump hasn't learned his lesson from Scotland.

Totally agree with you. The market for Doonbeg would be a very exclusive club with $100k+ membership aimed at the US Irish market. 200 members at 100k each is 20million. Then make up some more revenue with public green fees at €150 a round which would still be cheaper than the Waterville, Tralee, Old Head, Lahinch, etc.

We have enough "challenges" with the Irish Open without more in the equation.

I'd say this is what he would like to do if he could.

Trump has NO interest in hosting any golf events, period.
Why would you? would only destroy a course like Doonbeg.

Maybe if the course was within 15 miles of Miami...

Do you understand the multiplier effect that hosting the Open would have for Doonbeg? Think Pebble Beach here my friend.

Yeah difficult to accommodate any sizeable galleries there I'd imagine considering dunes are off limits. Aside from all the accommodation issues etc.

Popular surf spot. Maybe he'll add a surf club:D

    Not idiotic at all,

That is one of the reasons that it is not held in Portmarnock too often.
Typically Trump sets up a very private, high security , high end development. This / He, will not have any interest in something that is opening up to the public.

Anyway - this is not the apprentice - the place was only purchased today.

He has bought it on the cheap - will try build loads of houses or apartments on the land and land next to it - if not successful , he will sell it on at profit when market recovers.

No chance of the Irish Open there at all.
