Bennettsbridge & Lisdowney are playing the Junior final next Sunday. I would expect the Bridge to probably just about do it. They were the best club in Kilkenny back in the 60s but have been down for a while now.

TJ played well for Shamrocks yesterday but the break should now do him good. He was entitled to play Junior for the club earlier in the year because he missed last year's Senior club through injury. Not a rule I agree with but that's what it is.

Ned English deserves great credit for in just a year won Clyda a club title.Not even interviewed for it.Just two men from what i heard.And the Board know who they want.If cleary overlooked as top man,its a joke.

Id love to clyda in a Munster title.Padraig o mullane sum club man,37 years age,great to c him win it.Played a blinder.

Unlikey to stay on next year id say ,but the future is bright with the club.

A lot of bigger clubs flatter to decieve,Clyda and Haven ,always give their all.Best of luck to both them in Munster.

REBEL OG ACADEMY STRUCTURES AND PANELS 2013/2014 2013-10-14 23:11:00

Rebel Og Academy 2013 / 2014

While 2013 saw a complete revamp of Cork GAA Development squads, in line with the recommendations of the Hennessey report, the coming year will see further streamlining of county underage panels to ensure the best possible player development pathway for young Cork place is in place.

The camp format introduced last year will be maintained, with significant modification, while prioritisation of player development over immediate tournament success will continue to prevail. Again, a pre-agreed calendar with Coiste na nOg will be in place, with clear windows outlined for development squad activity. Finally, mid-way through last year, the Rebel Og Academy banner was established to cover all Cork development squad activities and from this point all references to Cork underage teams (from U13 to 17) will come under this heading. The academy is under the auspices of Coiste na nOg, while county Minor teams remain directly under Coiste Chontae Chorcai. However, it is planned for a close association between all levels for the coming year.

Player Programme

While there was always a route from one underage group to the next, this pathway will be much more clearly defined in future. Three two-year-programmes are outlined below. A coaching syllabus at each level is to be designed -

Three levels (2-year programmes)

(i) School of Excellence

‘Finding the Player' Cork U13 /14 aligned with... 1st/2nd year or U14 school team

At U13 and U14 level, the emphasis will be on player selection and skill development, while also introducing a physical exercise programme to underpin the physical conditioning, which will follow at subsequent stages. All coaching for the year at U13 and for the first half of the year at U14 will take place on a regional basis, with inter-regional tournaments, being used for player selection for county panels. This programme will conclude with a six-month block (ten weekly sessions proposed - to be confirmed) of field-based coaching for players selected on the county panel of 48, followed by the inter-county tournaments. This programme will be aligned with the 1st and 2nd year school programme at post primary level, in terms of skill development and games programmes.

(ii) Mardyke Programme

‘Moulding the Player' Cork U15/16 aligned with... Junior school team

At U15 and U16 level, the programme will focus on individual player development with clear measurement of progress for each player. Skills testing, physical testing, video analysis and individual gym / skills programmes will be in place under the Mardyke programme. Panels of thirty players will be in place at both levels in football and hurling for the initial six-month period from November to April. A regional programme of games which will be provided concurrently for players outside of these panels is described below, from which the remaining 18 players will be selected to form the summer panels of 48. Both U15 and U16 panels will be aligned, throughout the year, in terms of training and games programmes. This programme will be also aligned with the Junior school teams at post primary level, in terms of skill / physical development and games programmes.

(iii) Cork Minor Programme

‘Moulding the Team' Cork U17/18 aligned with... Senior school team

Finally at U17 and U18 level, the emphasis will move towards forming a successful inter-county Minor team, with mature, well-rounded individuals emerging from the previous programmes. The programmes and testing outlined above will continue to be in place, but players will be expected to have greater levels of independence, in terms of monitoring, by this point. Also, training will be more regular and intensive, with a higher number of matches also. This programme will be aligned with senior school teams at post primary level, in terms of skill / physical development and games programmes.

A New Squad Structure

In line with the recommendations of the Hennessy Report, there will again be a Cork ‘A' panel of 30 at all age groups in both football and hurling. from U15 to U17. These will be called the Mardyke squads and will attend camp during school holidays at Halloween, Christmas, February mid-term and Easter.

As the underage divisional underage boards are no longer in existence, with the inter- divisional competitions expiring accordingly, there is currently a significant gap between club and county level.... a step missing from the ladder of progression, so to speak. Given the geographical spread of the county it is not possible for second level schools to fully fill this gap.

In the past year, the Rebel or B squads have attempted provide a stepping stone between county and club, with several players being called in throughout the year and with promotion to and from the A squads. However, as contact with these B squads was limited, it is now believed that providing effective coaching under such format is unlikely to occur. Also, at 30, it is considered that the B squad is too small to incorporate a significant trawl of the county for new players. In other words, a broader county-wide structure is required as both a coaching and trial mechanism, providing a base from players can progress to the A squad.

The proposed model is based on the old divisional structures, but with significant modification. The eight divisions are merged to form four new regions. Also, due to the different focus in a number of regional areas on either football or hurling, there are merged differently for each code. Therefore, it seeks to address the imbalance between strong and weak areas in either code. Geographical dispersal is also taken into account and the proposed structure fits well with the current geographical areas allocated to the Games Development Administrators (GDAs).

This format was used last year in selecting the Cork U14 panels, with regional coaching under the GDAs leading to inter-regional tournaments from which county squads were then selected. It is also being used currently at U13 level with regional panels now formed.

If a player is on an A county panel in one code (e.g. hurling), he will not be allowed to line out with a regional team in either code (i.e. hurling and football). This is to avoid burnout, but such players will be given a trial in the other code at some stage during the year and if successful, may join the panel of 48 for the summer programme. Finally the regional structure will incorporate an open trial format in that clubs can propose players for selection to their local GDA for inclusion at the next available opportunity, ensuring that the door remains to all players at all times during the six-month regional period. Thus, the late developer is included.

A New Calendar

While the positives associated with continuously promoting and demoting players from squads are obvious in terms of providing opportunity for those outside the panel, there are also negatives in terms of putting young players under constant pressure and the confusion involved for players, parents and mentors. As a result, it has been decided to break the twelve-month programme into two six-month blocks.

At U14 level, a player will play with his region in A & B tournaments (total 200 players approx) described above from November to April. Then on May 1st the second half of the year will commence with the naming of the summer county squads of 48 players. This group of 48 (24 A & 24 will train over the summer in preparation for the inter-county tournaments. Players will be inter-changeable between A & B throughout the summer. A limited number of dual players will be permitted.

At U15 level, from November to April, a player will be on either the A squad of 30 or will play with his region in tournaments outlined below. There will be no movement between panels unless a player drops out, suffers a long-term injury or is removed due to disciplinary reasons. Dual players will prioritise one code for this period During the same period, the inter-regional tournament games will run for approximately 100 players, outside of the Cork 30.

Saturday, Nov 30th
2. Thursday, January 2nd - Saturday, January 4th Xmas break
· Saturday, January 25th
3. Monday, February 17th - Friday, February 21st Mid-term break
· Saturday, March 22nd
4. Monday, April 21st - Friday, April 25th Easter Break
At the end of April, all squads will be decommissioned and on May 1st the second half of the year will commence with the naming of the summer squads of 48 players each. These panels will most likely include the 30 A players and 18 further players selected from the regional tournaments. This group of 48 (24 A & 24 will train over the summer in preparation for the inter-county tournaments. Players will be inter-changeable between A & B throughout the summer. A limited number of dual players will be permitted.

The initial A panels of 30 at U15 and U16 level will be selected as follows. The outgoing mentors for the respective groups have nominated 25 players for inclusion and the remaining five places will go to players who impress at the opening round of regional games. These five players will be immediately upgraded to the A panel and will play no further part at regional level.

It is proposed that the U17 panel be aligned with the Cork Minor programme of dates, to a limited degree. While this is agreed in principle with the Cork Minor football mentors, it is yet to be sanctioned officially.

Mardyke and Regionals Squads Programme

A few key points are as follows:
· Players would attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with Tuesdays and Thursdays seeing players remain at home for rest and recovery. On these days the regional panels will assemble for tournament games.
· Both field and indoor sessions will be included on all days. This will mean the requirement for a shuttle bus to ferry players between venues at 12pm daily.
· Mondays will include an internal match, while Fridays will always include an external match. This match may take place on Friday evening, depending on the opposition. External matches would be recorded on video and circulated to all players and mentors by email.
· Wednesday will be our testing day including both physical testing at the Mardyke and skills testing at the Old Mon Fields. All data will be processed and ready for analysis by players and mentors by Friday of the same week.
· The format for regional squads has been described previously. The games programme can be seen below.
· The games schedule for the regional teams can be seen below. All games will take place at the Old Mon Fields, St. Vincent's.
· For all regional games, panels of 21 will be carried, with all 21 players guaranteed at least one full half. Games will be 70 minutes long to ensure adequate game-time.

Nothing has changed in Cork Gaa,no matter what they lead us to believe.

A superb hurling championship for cork,is like one step forward and ten steps back ,as the u21 appointment and the league farce,shows the board fully control Cork,and we have not learned from past mistakes.


As an intercounty manager in two years,record of Kenneally is poor we just beat clare,and at home ,but were dismal against waterford and limerick last year.


The usal papering over the cracks happened ,and like i said and feared in july,Waterford winning the all ireland minor was awful for cork.

Love to c them win,nothing against thew,but I knew that they would say cork were just unlucky against Waterford at home,could won ,unlucky,took them to extra time ,and if we won we could win the all ireland etc.

The county board praised the work kenneally done,and said they had never seen a team better prepared.In fairness preparation entails picking the best players in their best posistions.


I knew then the writing was on the wall and said kenneally would be reappointed.I was wrong and thought that when he didnt want the job ,we were going to get a astute manager.



I never thought he would be the u2 1 manager.You would not see it anywhere else.

A manager that has failed with one of the best talented minor squads in years, is now having four years in charge cork underage,like ger fitz.

I said after waterford game,cork were not unlucky they lost,but very lucky waterford didnt put us away.If the game was in waterford we would have been beaten out the gate.


I do not blame the players,how can you ,when a player ,for example ,killan o connor ,who is not a centre back ,plays their when he is a full back.


Twomey a centre back plays half.Their is numerous examples of players being played in wrong positions , or better players not even on the panel in hes two years.


Pa herihly Mallow coud not make the team,not even the panel last year.Most of the minor team last had won under Landers at u 15 and 16 etc.When they went to minor they did not.




We had an u21 manager last year who tactically was inept,and we were so poor ,we did not out of 45 players,get one nomination,even with Ger cunnigham on the panel,in the tg4 team of the year.

Anybody expecting Cork to be better next year is expecting a lot.This manager ,could not wait to give paper and radio interviews after beating Clare, yet since waterford beat us ,was not heard of.

He said in he's first year , that if a player has two bad games,hes a bad player.What a statement to make on young players.

What does a manager that has two bad years in charge be?

Its clear as day JBM will have to turn cork in to winners on hes own,as he wont have much help at u21 as i cant see them winning a Munster.I hope I am wrong.


I am gutted,Pa O' Callaghan a super talent,had two awful years at minor,now have two more at u21 without any success.


A forward line of cahalane ,cadogan, pa callaghan , herihly , mark o connor ,aron ward,trevor horgan to name a few ,is on paper a great pick of players.

Rickard cahalane at midfield,Colm spillane etc, Cork have super talent.

Again ,we fail at management .
Ger cunnigham should have been given this job,and told the senior job if he done well ,he would get it when jbm goes.

The fact it did not happen, i would say their is not much holding him to cork if Limerick come looking ,and like i said i heard limerick want him.

If limerick want him he should go ,as he wont get top jobs in Cork.

Eddie Murphy , Johnny Crowley ,Fred Sheehy , Patsy Morrisey etc ,are all top coaches, yet never got consideration.

When JBM goes ,Cork are in trouble.Kenneally or Ger Fitz,will be part of the set up.

The reason i say this, is tonights appointment shows managers are not appointed on merit.

This is worse than the football appointment.

I don't c anything wrong with Cuthbhert getting it ,as there was only ever two men in line.

What i do not agree with is if Cleary was available then the best man did not get the job, as while both Cleary and Cuthbhert have flaws, Clearys good u 21 record in which he consistently beat Kerry in Kerry,and he's excellent record with the Haven is much superior to Cuthbhert,who was minor coach for two years ,and with Bishoptown.


Cleary must wonder what more could he do to get it.If cleary did not get it due to a better coach ,fair enough,but that is not the case.


Cuthbert may do well ,i hope he does .

A lot depends on the back up team.I wonder will Diarmuid O Donovan be part of it .

The minor job should be Mark landers,clearly the Best man for the job. People with the development squads, men involved in school teams,,and even people in other counties like limerick and tipp, speak highly of him as a coach.

After tonight it shows the Best men do not always get the job.

WITH the 2013 Senior Championship delivering a new winner for the first time in 18 years, there’s a number of stand-out performers who deserve their time in the spotlight.
At the top of the list is Caoimhe Creedon of the first-time champions St Val’s.
The former Cork attacker was superb in her side’s win over titleholders Inch Rovers, kicking five points — four from play — to keep her side in it in the first-half.
However her stand-out performance of the championship was in August when the sides met in the quarter-final in Kilmurry, despite both having secured semi-final berths.
That night she scored a whopping personal tally of 3-5 against top class defender and multi All-Star winner Angela Walsh.
Her dinky runs also terrorised the likes of Donoughmore and Éire Óg during the campaign, and given the season she’s had, she’ll be a wanted woman to return to the Cork senior panel next year.
Her younger teammates, final MVP Vera Foley, Aoife Plunkett and Máiréad Corkery also had good performances.
For Inch Rovers there were consistent displays from Sarah Harrington, Noelle O’Donovan and Rachel Galvin, while Aoife Walsh was another to shine.
For semi-finalists Donoughmore Rena Buckley and Juliet Murphy performed well in the semi-final, while Aisling O’Connor and Aisling Barrett was very consistent throughout.
Éire Óg did brilliantly to get to the semi-final stages in this year their first year at the premiere level, with Eimear and Elaine Scally both doing well, while for Clonakilty Carol Ann O’Donovan, Jenny Quinn, Susie Foristall and Claire O’Leary shone.
For Rosscarbery, forward Máiréad O’Driscoll and defender Gráinne O’Sullivan were the stand-out players, while for Bride Rovers Arlene O’Callaghan, Trish O’Sullivan and Katie Kelleher all put in good shifts.
For Mourneabbey the stars were Laura Fitzgerald, Roberta Harrington and Ciara O’Sullivan.

Cuthhbert has a easy start to the job than what he could have had,in ist two league games at home,westmeath and Kildare.


Dublin in the start of March in Croke park ,a night game under lights,kerry away,and Mayo away,will really test us.Thats what we need.Hopefully we will have four points at that stage.

Four home games out of seven,no trip up north,cork should at least stay in div 1, while blooding new players.

Agree Landers would be the ideal man for the job.
Don't think he'll get it as ccc seem to make every bad decision possible.
