Mine has shipped since yday anyways so looking foward to it.

It's available on ebay for ~ €45 - with fast shipping.

And possibly available elsewhere. I like it, but I honestly wouldn't pay more than €30 for it. (I may have said that already).

It's not any different to this or other devices, (If you just want the simplicity of streaming from phone/device to TV)

not compatible with the firmware on the older eircom routers, mine was the zxyel router

I tried messing with setting etc to no avail.

Rang them up and asked for the new router.

Other had the same issue here
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057034693

works no bother with the newer eircom router.

They are simmilar, but not exactly the same; with the Chromecast your phone acts as a remote controller and once you have the Chromecast streaming content you can use the phone for other things.
With Miracast (the standard used by the product linked) your TV becomes a mirror of the phone, so you can't use the phone to surf the web or do other things while the streaming is playing.

Yep, agreed, I have the Chromecast. But with Miracast devices you can watch home movies, movies on your network, Movies on your Phone, or streaming sites like vimeo or metacafe etc.., or using apps like BubbleUpnP you can watch a movie, listen to music and take calls on your phone/multitask.

No denying that Chromecast is good.

    I've had both.
Chromecast is great at what limited things it is currently intended to do.
    Miracast was disappointing.

I found the Beta Chrome tab mirroring feature of Chromecast to be rough but I still found it better than Miracast

I got one of these but it ain't doing what I needed it to do (my fault for not investigating it more thoroughly). If anybody wants it for €50 PM me, I'm in Dublin 12 and will mail it to you in Ireland if necessary. It works fine.

Guys, sill question, but I assume if you want to watch netflix, you load it up on your phone and basically push it to Chromecast? It uses your own home wifi, and not the phones internet connection?

Also, netflix related, can you use the same account on more than one device at the same time? My daughter watches it a massive amount, as do I, but both on the same device (google TV). If I get the chromecast for her room, can she watch it on the same account, and me on my googleTV at the same time?

    Thanks

Yes for Phone + WiFi. Yep, for more than one device.

    Yep to all :)

Hey guys I got mine yesterday and if I'm to be completely honest I'm totally underwhelmed and disappointed.
I know I should have read the recent reviews and opinions but one of my buddys was in the states and I rushed in.
I read early reviews where there was a work around so you could cast local images and videos off your device.
I set mine up last night and connected my phone and all I could do was play a YouTube video. Big whoop di do!
I don't watch Netflix and I tried to cast a Web page from my chrome browser and found out that I can only do that from my laptop. Does this gadget have any practical uses?

when Google allow 3rd party apps it should become much more useful The development kit has been out months and there are lots of apps ready to go, everyone is just waiting on Google to open it up.

Not without some DD WRT router workaround

I've had the same problem with my microwave. It doesn't let me stream local content either. I wish I'd read what it was designed to do before I bought it.

Well if I bought a microwave with a grill and read reviews on it about how good the grill function was and then on the strength of this went out and bought one a month later only for morphy richards to come to my house and rip the grill out of it then I also wouldn't be happy.
Great analogy though, to compare a device that at one stage could stream local media to an appliance that heats up your dinner.
    Slow claaaaaaaap.

Save your slow claps. This device could never stream local media. It was never advertised that it could. What there was, was a hack that allowed it, which was patched up by Google. You bought something without understanding what it's capabilities were and are now complaining that a hack you heard about online doesn't work.

I imagine that this will eventually allow local media streaming, whether that is via Google or another hack.

Wait a minute.....do you need your laptop to watch netflix?

Does the CC not just plug into the HDMI slot and access Netflix straight away? Don't tell me you need to load netflix on the laptop first!!

CC has no interface of it's own to browse content so yes you need to select your content using another device and then push it to CC. Then the CC operates independently until you intervene again by controlling play back with the other device.

CC will use wifi and not your devices internet connection

I didn't realise it was possible to contradict yourself so quickly in the same post. "This device could never stream local media" "what there was, was a hack that allowed it". I'm slightly confused, so are you saying it never could or it could??
And I know it never advertised it could, I never said I read an advertisement I said I read reviews where people were using allcast to steam local media.
Whether it was a hack or not it was capable of it.
So I did fully understand the capabilities of the device at the beginning but didn't expect Google to reduce these to be what is essentially an inferior product to a hdmi cable and adapter from your phone.
As for the slow clap, http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/clapping.gif too late.

As far as I understand it, you don't need your laptop, you can also use your phone or tablet to push content to the Chromecast.

If you want something that doesn't require any external device to push content, you should look at getting one of those Android dongle things.
