I've had a hectic few weekends lately but eventually I was able to do a bit of work on the bike today. Nothing major but still things that needed to be done.
Battery wasnt holding its charge so had to replace that and then also changed the engine oil and filter. On the cosmetic front I added a pair of cotton reels to make putting it up and down on the paddock stand easier.
Got all the stuff from motorcycleshop.ie. good service and quick delivery which is free if over €49

Have you owned bikes before? Do you plan to look after it yourself?

I had a 125 suzuki maruader 5 years ago but i never did anything to it and it was a ball of sh1te.
I do wanna learn about how to take care of a bike (understand it's workings) but I amn't resolute in doing everything myself.
Is there a good place to learn the basics? (adjusting the chain and the likes)

Buy a Haynes manual for a start.

I found this guy's channel invaluable with regard to the day to day living with a bike a real eye opener. The truth is I'd really been underestimating how involved bikes are to live with on a daily basis. Maintenance really is little but often.

Things like regularly lubricating and adjusting the chain, maintaining and checking your brakes, checking tyre pressures and wear, cleaning and checking over the bike are more crucial than you'd think.

    ^^

Been looking at his vids for ages now.....I found them brilliant aswell, even if he is doing something you already know how to do you often find little things he does better. No bull**** or gloss either just honest vids.

I've discovered it's definitely time for me to get new tyres, and maybe adjust the gear lever. Just nearly came off the bike changing lane and gear at the same time, slipped into neutral, when it got to second back tyre went fcuking mental on me, just barely stayed upright. Think I might have been on a white arrow of death at the time, but too shaky to really recall.

Ah, my checks are up to date, more to do with the gear not taking hold, so too much power hitting the rear wheel than the tyre. Just need new ones anyway because they're not as sticky on wet as I personally like.

Which ones do you have, MD?

Yesterday rather than today, but finally after a month of riding on leaky forks, got my fork seals replaced. Feels wrong now they are working properly. It actually feels like there is something wrong with the bike now. Haha. In a way I preferred the handling with the lowered front end due to little/no fork oil.

Now I just need to get oil changed, gears looked at, electrics checked and possibly a new battery depending on how the electrics are.

Fork oil shouldn't affect the ride height though.
The springs are there for that.
If you want to sharpen the handling try dropping the forks through the triple clamps a small bit.

Im having a nightmare putting my starter switch back together:mad: Ive broken a plastic part that im trying to glue back at the moment. Apart from that im finding it really difficult to install the throttle cables back in. I can get the first one in no problem but the second it really difficult. Any tips:confused:

Im not sure. I had the same problem installing the choke cable a while ago and nearly broke the plastic housing that time. I cant touch it until tomorrow now when the glue sets. Ill have a look then.

just as long as its good enough to hold the broken bits together, but not good enough that it'll stick the throttle open, he'll be grand :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

I don't think its the throttle thats being glued, he said its the starter switch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,266 ✭✭✭Richard tea

Yea its just a white plastic bit that holds the starter switch down allowing it to make good contact. The reason I was stripping it down is because it could be a possibe cause of my bike stalling.
