Hey I wondering if anyone can help me?

I would love to get a Classical Land Rover Dender but I want to drive it as a everyday car. Can anyone tell me roughly what the insurance and tax might costs.
Also is it hard to fix them my partner has a Defender its a 00, he normally gets the parts for the Dender over the internet and fixes any problems by himself using the manual.
I would be happy with one from the 90's but I wouldn't be able to afford the tax
If you go pre 1980 tax will be 48 euro as for insurance who knows, ring around. If your using it as your only vehicle some insurance companies will require an engineers report to say its in road worthy condition.

A quick question. Do all insurance companies doing classic insurance insist on the policy holder to have at least 5 years no claims bonus?

Have a look at the landrover club website. www.clri.net ..special insurance discount for members and very helpful forum on anything to do with LR.... Definitely worth a look

Does anybody know if you can get insured on a modified classic?

IE for example a 998cc Mini that has had a 1.3 litre Cooper engine installed?

Yes you can. I know with modern cars you must/should notify the tax office for the engine change as it changes the tax bracket but as the car is already classic then it won't change in that respect...however it would be better to have the documentation correct if you were to sell it on.

As for the insurance, most companies should be ok as it is a standard engine transplant and will just insure it as a 1.3 (1275) Mini. Best thing to do would be ring a few yourself and see what they tell you.

Hi folks, looking for advice. I have a 20 year old car that has been used as a daily driver up to now. I want to insure on a classic policy as I bought another car for daily use. So far my experience has been:

AXA - tossers and far too expensive

First Ireland - I was told my car is considered mass-produced and therefore doesn't qualify for their classic policy. I guarantee there are fewer examples of my car on the road than there are old 911s, Minis or Mercs and there were less of them ever made in the first place!

I don't know how I'd get my hands on the figures, but is there any point going back to First Direct if I could show how not mass-produced my "mass-produced" car actually is? Even if I did, they'd probably do the usual trick of giving me a stupid quote to get rid of me.

If not, what are the best options for an older car that isn't considered classic because it's not a Merc or a Porsche?

Axa can be a bunch of twats alright, if you do not get someone who knows what they are talking about which is rarely...Have you tried Irish Vintage Society. I know well i drive a classic but as an everyday car have her fully insured with AXA but I got insured on my dads hearse then for €20 through the vintage society...

I presume vintage would mean 30 years old, though?

+1 on AXA they screwed me over bigtime and ended up costing me money and I didnt get cover. The IVS crowd were very helpful.

How old is your car, out of interest?

This is a topic I'm interested in myself

I reckon I might run into a similar issues if I take the plunge next year into a classic policy

The cars I'm interested in are either what's considered group 20 in the UK such as a 3dr Sierra Cosworth, R129 500SL or if I'd the money an E30 M3

Or the more unusual Japanese cars like a Figaro, Pao, Be-1 or the likes of an 88'-91' un-molested Honda CRX or Corolla GTi

I'll probably settle on something cheap that fits the norm, but I know if I had a mk1 Fiesta or mk2 Polo
I'd end having a more modern and powerful engine fitted which could also cause problems in getting covered.

Does anyone know if you have to be at least 30 to insure a Porsche on a classic policy?

If I ever were to get one, it would be a pre 86' 944 that would currently interest me.

Also, can't remember if it was here or a UK forum I read that some companies would consider any Porsche over 15yrs old to be eligible for classic cover policy

Guys does anyone know what the normal restricted mileage is for classic cars? Is it about 5,000 miles, or does it depend on the company etc? Also can you only get this if you are insuring as a second car? I'm about to buy a classic car but as my only car - I ride a motorbike during the week so I don't do much mileage anyway, so a restricted milage policy might be fine...

Varies, but goes up to 10k. Speak to First Ireland.

Not really, there might be another, but not much competition for a specialist specialist product. The other options is a standard motor policy from Axa or Hibernian - pretty much every company that does a standard motor policy has an age cap from 10/15/20/25/30 years.

    Good luck.

I'm with Aviva who have a classic option.

You can get 10/20% off is you have home/health insurance with them too.

I got a quote of €475 form Axa with a limit of 5000 miles - pretty happy with that! I'm wondering if other companies might do an even better deal - or perhaps higher mileage limit!

Just to update this thread. I'm toying with the idea of buying a 1990 car as a classic and just off the phone with campions. They will do insurance for €220 + €25(membership of a vintage association). 5000km limit, and Third party only. Not bad!!

If you Insure a car as a classic does that mean you can get classic tax too ?

No. Classic motor tax (officially called "Veteran/Vintage" motor tax) is for vehicles more than 30 years old.

    Hello all,
Mate has a 1992 MR2, but can't seem to get classic insurance on it. It'd be his sole car, and he's over 35 years old. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Registered Users Posts: 454 ✭✭tuborg_man

what i did when nobody was giving me a quote on my 89 mr2 turbo was go and buy a tiny run about (I bought a subaru vivio 660cc, insured that as my daily car and the mr2 as a classic, both came to about 650 insurance and ment i could lay the mr2 up for summer and potter about in the vivio.
You have to be over 25, not fully sure but classic policy has to be accompanied by a full time policy.

On another point I insured my 85 520i with a 2.5 engine fitted and declared on a 4000 mile policy for €220, have my other policy with them as well.

I've rung a few insurance companies today to see if I can get classic insurance on a 87 Suzuki and so far it's been a resounding 'No'. First Ireland say they can't quote because it's considered to be a mass produced car and doesn't qualify. Right, and the Triumph Dolomite you insured me on over the past 4 years was knocked up in a shed was it? There's fewer Swifts than Dollys here these days. By a long way. Bloody frustrating.

Anyway, AXA is the next port of call. Any other suggestions for who might insure an 87 Swift on a classic policy?

hate ressurrecting old threads but as this one is linked in the classic cars charter thread, im hoping its not to bad that its being ressurrected, and that someone will have new information as some of the companys listed in this thread either no longer are around or have changed.

ok now ive appologised i will begin
I have been a named driver for the last 3 years here in ireland and 2 years previously in england, i used to have my own insurance with 7 years ncb but as that insurance wasnt renewed and its gone past its cut off date i dont have them anymore.

I am pulling my hair out trying to get insurance for a landrover series 3 1977 petrol truck cab pickup, im 37 years old so wasnt expecting the hassle. ive tried a lot of companys and not getting much joy due to not having my own policy but being a named driver, most ive tried so far want a policy for another vehicle in my name or wont touch pre 94 vehicles????

AXA hummed and arr`ed wether it was a classic or a commercial and then said they wouldnt insure me unless i was a carpenter or plumber??
although im not quite sure if that was just the person dealing with me not knowing what the vehicle was as she wasnt the sharpest tool in the box in all honesty.

i still have a couple of companys to ring and try and get either sole car if i can actually find a company that does it, or will accept that i am a named driver and have use of another vehicle as my main drive, so the vehicle will have limited use.

Any help and suggestions for insurance companys would be apretiated
