That's my situation exactly. Irish insurance is a funny business. Here's me with 23 years on a full license with no claims ever. And there's my wife with a full license for just over a year and just 4 years NCB. I obviously gave full disclosure of our situation and I pointed out that the wife is unlikely to ever drive the Porsche, but there you go. Mind though about your own NCB. I have heard that it disappears if not used for 2 years. Check it out to be sure!

    Sorry Unkel,
I didn't make that very clear.
The existing classic policy that I've just renewed with CN is in my own name, But I don't have a regular insurance policy on a modern car in my name, I'm just a named driver on my wifes policy with Hibernian on her 2.4 liter Volvo.

1st Ireland did quote and for similar money to CN, but the policy would have to be in my wife's name and she would have to be a member of a classic car club!

Got a very good deal* from Aviva Hibernian, who are now taking classic insurance seriously. Last year they didnt quote, so I went to AXA. It helped that I have two family cars with Hibernian and am in the 'mid life crisis' bracket... I went in person to the office, which I think is better than over the phone. * 190 fully comp -1970 VW valued at c.€5000. Only thing they needed was a photo- mileage is <5000 p.a. , but no silly conditions..

1980 Mk1 gti 1600 for €252 fully comp with Hibernian Aviva. A reasonable price and a pleasant and very rapid transaction; I don't think I've ever obtained insurance as rapidly or with fewer questions. Required a photo of the car and took a copy of my licence and the better half's. Annual mileage limit is 6,000 I think and another car insured as a daily driver is a requirement, but the daily driver policy does not have to be with H-A; ours is with Quinns.

This is odd - they want €288 from me, for my Mercedes 230C. They want an engineers report from a main dealer however, which is a bit of a joke - will probably cost more than the insurance.

This is through O'Driscoll, O'Neill using my company car as my main car & 24 (6 weeks off 25) and license for nearly 6 years.

    Should I just go direct?

Don't forget to mention where you got their details (i.e. give them the www.boards.ie address !;) )...........it may just lead to some of their members signing up to this forum - which would be great !

    Silvera.

P.S. €845 for a 3 litre car (in everyday use!) doesn't sound too bad to me !

I drive a 1990 (not classic yet!) 3.5 litre BMW and one years fully comprehensive insurance comes in at 455 euro to include windscreen cover. This is my one and only everyday driver. The biggest downside is the immovable object of road tax at 1,500 per annum. It should definitely be included in the price of petrol, so its on a pay-as-you-drive basis. My car sits up for about 4-5 months every year when I'm working away, but its staggered, week or two here and there. As it is, a smaller car that does more mileage and damage to the environment etc pays less tax than I do!

I'm having a similar problem to SOGOOD in that my car isn't classic yet. I have a 1990 BMW 316i in mint condition with only 15,100 miles. I've had the car valued at €10,000

I recently found out that Hibernian will only insure me for 'market value', which for a 20 year old 316i is €1500-€2000 and is a car with probably 160,000 miles and rusty wheel arches!

Other insurers are the same, and for classic insurance require that it's a 2nd car and/or be 25/30 years old. I could arrange it as a 2nd car by putting my fiancé’s car under my name, but it's still not old enough.

Would anyone have any suggestions how I can get it insured for it's actual value?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Nick

AFAIK, Hibernian will agree a value if you provide photos. I can't see any insurer agreeing a value of €10,000 for an E30 316i, though.

Thanks for your advice Anan1. I've been on to Hibernian many times with no success. They even said they wouldn't be interested if I paid for an independent valuation.

However just this afternoon I had a breakthrough - Hibernian are doing classic car insurance but through the branches only - I was always talking to their call centre. They require that you prove named insurance on another car, but that doesn't have to be with Hibernian. They also want photos as you rightly pointed out.

BTW, I think the car was valued at €10k because of it's original condition & little over one year of mileage - for example the boot has never been used and the back seats have never been sat in - and it's custom-fitted cover keeps it that way. :) . Do you think it's worth a lot less that that?

Thats a nice looking car Nick, exceptional mileage too! How come? It looks just like my Beemers' little brother, same colour too! it's frustrating that so many "relevant" bodies see our cars as metal and plastic, a means of transport and thats all! As with all things, its worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. One strange paradox of sorts is this, insurance companies will say "its only worth xxx according to our calculations, so therefore, we will only give you xxx for it. The VRT people on the other hand, manage to come up with over inflated current market values on imports, therefore saying " we are going to charge you xxx and then some!"

Thanks SOGOOD . . . it's a little off this thread's topic . . . but nearly 7 months of searching, endless phone calls, 3 trips to the UK, dealer checks, documentation checks, tears . . . is the way I found exceptionally low mileage! Worth it in the end though. :)

To update my previous post, a very helpful person in Hibernian Dun Laoghaire has given me a fully comp policy at my valuation for under €300 providing I can prove insurance on another car, provide documentation & photos, and keep mileage below 2000 per year. I'm just waiting on the policy documents to check all this is correct. Lesson learnt is to go to the branch and avoid the call centres.

    Hope this helps everyone.

It looks like a lovely car, and I think it should be worth €10,000. But i'm sure you know as well as I do what the market's like these days. FWIW, I got Hibernian to cover a 911 for me, comp, agreed value €24k, for €250.

Does any company allow named drivers on a classic insurance policy? Ie. if my father got insurance on a classic car, could I be put on as a named driver? On top of that are there any that would allow named drivers as young as 20 or 21?

Im pretty much in the same boat Smul, 22 with full licence and 3yrs ncb, and can't get insured as named driver on my dad's classic, doesn't seem to be possible until you hit 25 unless you know someone in the insurance business!!

anyone know of any companies that will insure a classic camper just as a classic?

I have a '73 Beetle and a '74 VW camper and a daily driver. I can't combine any of the policies so I have three separate policies, all with AXA (or in the case of the camper, with Dolmen but underwritten by AXA).

Both the Beetle and camper are up for renewal, €250 for the beetle, €330 for the van. While neither are going to break the bank my problem is this: I already pay for a daily-driver policy on the Corolla so I'm trying to minimise the cost of insurance on the other two since I can only drive one car at a time.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,957 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

Can you not get the Beetle and Camper together on one policy with anyone? I was speaking to AXA just a couple of days ago and understood that their classic car policy could have up to three additional vehicles. (Whether or not a camper is a car is up for debate).

I've just had to do my 31 year old daily on a regular policy for €500. I'm sore because I know back in the UK I could have it on a classic policy as main vehicle, U/L mileage, breakdown, everything for £100. + an additional car wouldn't cost any more.

no, they won't accept the camper as a classic.

Talked to them and nothing older that mid 80's.

Got renewal quote from AXA for €310,

Just called Carole Nash, and got it for €208, 4000 miles, fully comp on a 1.9L 1969 Classic.

First Ireland will. I have the same problem over the last few years, as you have to be over 25 to get Classic Insurance on your own.

I don't mean to bump this thread, but I have news regarding young people (-ish) and classic insurance.

I rang Carol Nash today looking to get my Escort Mk3 insured. I asked them what the story is with under 25's getting insurance, and basically they told me their minimum age limit is 23, not 25. Happy days, as I'm 23! :D

I got a quote for €450, fully comp (between 23 to 25 is fully comp only apparently), has breakdown assist, windscreen cover, all that jazz. All of which isn't bad given Hibernian quoted me nearly a grand! To add the Micra K10 to it is €50 extra.

As mentioned before, you do need a everyday insurance policy on a different car, which I do.

I'll be on the road in it for the summer!

some companies insure 15+ car as classic
    30 for tax (currently)
you can insure an old car as your only car
