Apologies if this has been asked before, but I have recently bought an Ariva 250 to replace a 120, and I was hoping that someone here could tell me the simplest way to migrate the channel list from one to the other.

    Thanks in advance...

There is no easy way to do this without killing the box I'm afraid. I can post a link to a well ordered free channel list if that's any help ?

Thanks for the swift response, but I doubt that would work for me. I have a strange eclectic list of Spanish, English, Dutch and German channels set up. Would there be any way of doing this using a third-party channel editor?

I've never tried it to be honest as there's a big risk of creating an incompatible database which will corrupt the firmware in the box. STB would be the man to ask

I know this quote is over a year old, but I still see many references in recent posts along the lines of "do this exactly the right way or you risk breaking the box"

[snip]Simple advice would be ( based on the issues reported with its predecessor, the 120 ) to set it up with a channel list you are happy with, and if working well, don't update the firmware ever again.[snip]

It kind of defeats the purpose if updating the firmware can break the box. I tend to update anything I get, just to be sure it's on the latest & greatest *official* version of code. If we can't rely on the official code, what can we rely on?

    So, two basic questions -
Is there still a reason to be wary of upgrading firmware on the 250?
Assume that I actually do want to edit my channel list on occasion as the kids get interested in different stuff over time, is there still a reason to be wary of updating the list?

    I always update too.

The thing about the channell list is that some people dump the channell list, then upgrade the box and then put the channell list that they have dumped back on the box. For some people this works. But my understanding is that this is not recommended.

What is recommended is making a new channell list.

When I update, I have always just made a new channell list and that way, if you do it correct, you will not have any problems.

Hope that clears up the confusion.

I would be interested in a 3rd party channel editor too, especially one that can write in different formats so I can set the channel list up once and write it to my different boxes without having to use different editors.

I use SetEdit - http://www.setedit.de - for my trusty old MVision HD200. I also use another one called Clarke Tech Editor

What other ones exist for the 250?

I have not used setedit myself on th e250 but I know someone that does use it

What version do you use, is it 1.26?

The guy I know uses this one:

    SetEdit HD100

I use 1.11 for the MVision, but there are different versions (i.e. different installs) for different receivers. I see there's one for the ArivaLink, but I'm not entirely convinced that this would work on the 250 and I'm not sure I want my brand new box to be the guinea pig. I'll mail the SetEdit guy and see what he says.

If a channel list mess up can be reverted simply by restoring to factory (which should be the way things work) then I'll give it a lash, but if a channel list mess up can hose the box entirely then I'm not so sure.

I've been looking at the export functions for the Clarke Tech editor - http://www.digital-sat.it/ds-go-download.php?id=530 - and (from my limited reading to date) it appears to have a couple of formats which should be supported by the 250. I saw mention of SatCoDX & ALi formats. So far though (in software, on the PC only) the import hasn't worked properly and the channel lists are corrupted. They open, but the descriptions are mangled.

there are problems with upgrading , mine went wrong twice after upgrading

Does anyone have experience of using the 250 with homeplugs?

Homeplugs should not be used with anything apart from helping to fill your bin. They are bad technology that cause interference to other users of the radio spectrum.

Yep, and it works perfectly. Wired is better as you have less bits to go wrong and you're not powering up two additional devices but if that's not an option, then homeplugs are perfect.

Never mind Winston1. His argument basically equates to a statement that the Short wave radio enthusiasts hobby that may live 4 doors down is more important than yours.

    Fully agree. Actually in order:

    1) wired is best;
    2) then homeplug
    3) then the plug in aerial.

No. A SW radio enthusiasts hobby is as important not more important.

Did you read the links, SW radio is used by important emergency services as well.

It is a cheap and very nasty system which likely will get banned some time in the future

The OP wanted to know if they work with the Ariva.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,353 ✭✭✭✭Tony

You have to set up a channel list via scan or a pre made list using usb

Why are you still insisting on using such bad technology as homeplugs? There are so many better ways of doing it that don't cause interference to other users.

They work fine, none of my neighbours are knocking on my door complaining of interference.I had no choice as running cables is a no-no.

BTW,Dect phones cause more interference than these, check the umpteen threads here about it.

Anyhow,I'm happy and that's what counts.

Your neighbours are not knocking because they don't know where the interference is comming from.
If there are mains cables in your house then you can run CAT 5 along the same route. It may be inconvenient and mean taking up floorboards but is quite possible. CAT 5 is slim and can also be run along skirting boards and round doors easily. What will you do when Homeplugs eventually get banned?

BTW, Dect phones operate on allocated frequencies and DO NOT cause interference. Their allocated frequencies are in the satellite IF band and the perceived interference you mention is purely due to poor installation practices allowing ingress of Dect signals. With proper double screened cable such as WF100 fitted with crimped or compression F connectors which are properly tightened to the receiver and LNB and no crappy wall plates there will be no interference.

There are no frequencies allocated to Homeplugs. They just steal other people's allocations, and not just spot frequencies either, but everything between 2 and 30MHz. Frequencies which are allocated to SW broadcasts, trans Atlantic air traffic control, the maritime service etc. The latest giggabit types extend this to 300MHz which interfere with FM broadcasts, DAB, the fire service, ambulances, police etc.

Just think about this before saying you are happy and that's what counts. In truth you are selfish and don't care about anyone else.

Guys can I ask respectfully that we stick to topics specific to the Ariva 250 otherwise the thread will quickly become useless.

I'm not going to get dragged into an argument over something pointless.I have the homeplugs working flawlessly with the 250 and I'm happy with that. We've had enough ripping the house apart to last a lifetime so if I even mentioned running cables I'd be put to the road.

I tested running a HD video on youtube with the Ariva and it ran flawlessly.
