Loads of stock accross the country

This is marketing genius by Nikon.

Sell cheap decent DSLR body's, which really need a lens upgrade as soon as you buy, and at least 1 in 3 consumers may get the shutter bug and upgrade the body in a year or two. And keep the brand loyalty as they now have Nikon glass .

    Win/win

There was a shortage of these not so long ago (floods in Thailand), and the prices went up. This is just balancing out I reckon, and shifting the stock that's left.

The 18-55mm kit lens is actually quite good. Granted it's external AF and it isn't the fastest lens on the planet but I wouldn't say it's so bad that it *has* to be upgraded.

Those were all taken using the 18-55mm kit lens and a D3100 (save for one which may have been taken using a 35mm).

I'm heading off on holidays to SE Asia in about a week and a half and was looking for a decent camera before I left, would this be suitable? I've never had a DSLR before. I'll be looking to take pictures of landscapes/cities/buildings/temples/etc mostly, outdoors stuff I guess. I doubt I'll have time to buy a different lens before I go so would have to go with the one that comes with the camera.

Claimed the cash back offer from Nikon last week.....anyone have any idea how long it takes for Nikon to give you the cash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭Columbia

Mine took about 2 weeks if I recall correctly.

That model is AF-S only, where does it say VR? Can't even see the switch

No, I was saying it was the same lens as you had spotted on adverts - non-VR.

    About 10 days.

Not a massive amount actually. The blues were bumped up just a tad in two of the photos ("Cliffs of Portrush" and the colour version of the bridge).

My favourite out of them ("Sailing in to the light") was really just a circular polariser (to give the water that painting-like shimmer and reflections) and a graduated neutral density filter to tweak the lighting.

Price is €379 now (and they have "was €392" underneath it! )

The price went up the day after I bought mine...I can't believe I got such a bargain...I'm having a fantastic time with it. It seems to be THE entry level DSLR to have... I think pushing the price back up, just because they realized its popularity is very unfair.

Be interested to hear how you get on with it. I`ve been looking at the Nikkor 70-300 for the last few weeks. I`m sure the Sigma is a cheaper option(Nikon lens is around €500) so could be interested in picking one up instead.

Fairly disappointed with the Nikon super zoom lens. 70-200vr. (105x300mm on the d3100) which has similar performance as the 70-300.

I would give those "do everything" lens a miss if you like sharp edges and low light performance .

Which 70-200 did you get? Only one I can see is £1000 st.

You sure it isnt the 55-200?

Edit: If it is the 70-200 above then its a much higher spec lens and if its the 55-200, I think thats more or lens a kit lens with the 70-300 I`m interested in a step up from it.

I do stand to be corrected though.

The 70-200MM is supposed to be top notch. F2.8 so it's even better than the kit lens in low light.

The 55-200MM and 70-300MM that you'd find in the likes of Argos are average.

Mmm I was under the impression the 70-300 was a better lens, better optics, better build quality etc.

Sorry. I miss read that. I have a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and a do everything superzoom nikon 18-200mm vr. I was talking about the 18-200.

    Amazon

the reviews seem decent, and I'm nver going to spend €5/600 on lenses. Nearly double the price to get the Nikon 55-200. I was very tempted, but the reviews on the Sigma were very good, as were the equivalent Tamron. I haven't used it too much yet, but my lads are rowing this weekend, and that's when I'll try it out.
