35mm F1.8 is a bargain. Got the VR version of the camera for 320 after cashback in PC world just before christmas.

My advise is to sell the kit lens on ebay as soon as you get the camera and either buy a 35mm f1.8 or the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 with the money back. The Tamron is much sharper and faster than the kit lens..
The 3200 is great but not really relevant to the thread as it costs a whole lot more. And anyway. Its more about the glass than the body. The specs of the 3100 are very impressive for the price. Miles ahead of budget and mid priced dslrs from a few years ago.
    Great camera. Recommended.

VR on the 18-55 kit is great tho when taking low shutter shots of waterfalls and you don't have a tripod...i really don't have steady hands!

In low light without a tripod 2 stops is a godsend.

So last night they were saying the camera is available on order. I went ahead and reserved one and today it says they are all out of stock again.

Does this mean my reservation is no longer valid?

What I mean is that it's not a great price, it's just OK. Personally I'd pay the extra for VR on a lens that long.

    ...and it's ~€110 (inc. Parcel Motel) here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NIKON-ED-AF-S-DX-NIKKOR-55-200mm-f-4-5-6G-Telephoto-Zoom-Lens-Unsealed-/111029186382?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item19d9daef4e with a 3 month warranty.

I bought my VR new for €155! VR would be more useful on that than on the 18-55

Good cheap lens, but I don't use it nearly enough.

That model is AF-S only, where does it say VR? Can't even see the switch

Amazon have the VR version for STG£106 brand new, you'll have to use Parcel Motel for shipping.

I would not buy that lens. Its complete junk.
Dont think that just because it has a 200mm focal length that it is good. Your images will be soft and VR or not , it will not take good low light pics. You really do get what you pay for with nikkor glass.

Get a prime lens , learn more, take much sharper pics with faster wide aperture and a much creamer bokah . Thats my humble opinion after been down the road a few good few years now. Im a hobby photographer and also got blinded by them low prices of the crapper lens aswell.

I got the 18 -200vr which is around the 400 mark and have been disappointed . Those super zooms are soft unless you pay the bigger bucks for a f2.8 . I Got a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 later and made the 18-200 feel junky with both feel and image quality. Although the 18-200 has its place as a walk about lens.
If you do stick with it , you can carry your lens to your next body upgrade so its worth not scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as glass goes.

Yep, a nice prime (35mm or 50mm) is much more rewarding. I only had mine (55-200) for a few weeks, but didn't feel inspired to use it much after initial testing.

24-70 2.8 is about the best zoom available. for zooms you need to be looking at big bucks to match a prime, just move forward or back to get things in frame, it pays off with image quality

Just wondering if people that applied for the 35 euro cash back on the website received an acknowledgement from Nikon?

I submitted my claim on the 8th and received a response on the 11th. They say delivery could take up to 14 days.

Lots of these back in stock around the country according to Check Argos!

Forgive the stupid question, would this camera, with 14mp, be better that a basic pocket camera (Sony DSC RX100) with 18mp?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭MisterKipling

Main difference is the sensor...its much larger in dslr...after that then you get the FX models which are full frame. Plus most pocket camera's don't allow you to manually change shutter speeds and aperture size...iso's can be set to much larger or lower settings on DSLR's. There are a few compact digitals that are closing the bridge tho, such as the NEX range, samsung nx1000 and others...
