Sorry mate, not meant to offend. I've found in the last few years that when orgainising my work society events (40 plus players each time), clubs now give you a 4 ball after the event and are very against offering a free round prior (especially the good ones), seems strange alright but just what I've observed. When I went to check out PH, he offered the reduced rate and considering the membership rate is so cheap, that equated to more than half a months subs.
The visit seems to be just that, a visit to look around the club house, facilities and take a walk around the course to check the condition of it.

No offence taken. It obviously depends on the club. Early this year I was helping a friend set up a schedule for a society and we were offered free rounds in quite a few places, although none would be considered top rank.

We'll see how they get on. Its a top class course so if they can get a proper club going they should do well next year. The only people joining now will be those not currently in somewhere.

I've played it in winter but never after a really wet spell. Will be worth checking out how well it handles the elements.

I don't find it strange at all, for every genuine inquiry, I'd say you could fill a four ball of chancers.

When looking at clubs recently I was offered that my round would be deducted from the annual fee if I decided on that club.
Fair to both parties really. I can't imagine how it was any other way.

I don't think they'd let you back to Palmerstown though the "State" you were in the last time :pac::pac::pac:

Have they started work on the bunkers. Only real thing letting the course down atm. Played Killeen a few weeks ago after Palmerstown, and for courses of similar grand ambitions and settings, the bunkers in Killeen were a dream, Palmerstown compacted and tough.

Not when I was there on Friday but they plan to soon enough I believe. I think they do them in groups of five at a time. I've heard they have all the proper drainage already and just need some TLC, unblocking of drains and new sand and all should be good. Definitley a bit sticky when I played but at least consistent.

Hard to match the bunkers in KC at the moment to be honest. Played Druids Glen 2 weeks ago and bunkers very, very, very bad with little if any sand in them. Seems to be an issue in most courses in Ireland at the moment that have a tighter than normal cash flow.

:o Bit of a wild night before that round alright!

I've been back after that though, booked in under a false name... said I was some lad from Tipp :)

Are you serious? Now that's a club that needs some lessons in customer relations. Wouldn't want any part of a place like that. If a club manager can't distinguish between a genuine prospect (and treat them properly) and a chancer he is in the wrong job.

Good to hear. What did they charge you as a matter of interest? Clubs will usually offer a complimentary round if they think you are serious about joining.

As GolfingGod said no free round was availible, wasn't looking for one either, we did get a discount than what price it is on teetimes or golfnet though.

Fair enough - I wouldn't be looking for one either. Was just wondering how hard they were trying to sell it.

lot of clubs out there that need a lesson in customer relations.

Well I joined yesterday anyway, I know for sure there is a 6 figure sum set aside for a re generation of all bunkers on the course so that's not a worry for me, new range balls arrived as I was there so the range is going to be re opened anyway. It has the makings of a great club as the quality of the course will always be an attraction. It swung me anyway.

Good for you and best of luck with it.

I'm playing Palmerstown house tmw with a view to deciding if I join for 2014. If they get all the facilities up and running, club house, range etc this value will be tough to beat. Looking forward to it.

Enjoy it but I would want to see it in winter conditions as well before making a decision. Every course is at it's best now; it won't always be like that.

this sort of talk is what puts me off the place

nobody knows any of this sort of talk as fact

bottom line is it's a risk and lets not pretend otherwise

As I understand, it will be payment on a month by month basis so not that big a risk. Between now and next year will be plenty of time to see how they go about it, and how well it handles a soggy Irish winter (the norm nowadays alas.)

Playing it tomorrow myself to see what all this talk is about..

Where's the risk in paying monthly?? If your not happy, stop paying. Simples. And "this kind of talk" you refer to is what I would call sharing knowledge to other forum users of future developments in the club. Wether you choose to ignore or take heed is your choice.

It is a quality track, no question about that, Played it quite a few times a couple of years back, I'd love to join, but if memory serves me, it gets very soft in the winter, Hopefully I'll get down over the next few weeks and have a wee game and be proved wrong, good luck to all involved.

August/September is not when you will answer those questions.

The last time I played there it was wet and windy and we had to give after 9 or 10 holes cause of the sleet and rain......and the course was still in good condition. I wouldn't fear too much about it over the winter.

With the winters we've been getting isn't every course very wet and soggy in winter?

No. The ones with proper drainage can handle it.

Played it today.. I didnt play my best golf but course was nice enough..I found the greens to have a nice roll on them and are in good condition but there far from quick...The bunkers could do with a bit more sand in them. other then that the course looked nice especially the 18th hole.

Played today, 35 points off 19 and course was in great shape. 3 ball went around in 4 hours.

Membership looks like a great offering and from what the pro is saying they appear to be setting off in a positive direction with an eye on the mistakes of the past on how not to treat members if you want the course to survive.

Your knowledge is from what source though?

It's the usual 'I heard this' or 'I have it on good authority that..' stuff.

And your right, the risk isn't great as you can cancel the direct debit. The risk I was talking about was the risk of putting the effort into joining a new club and hoping its a success.

This place is a very big risk right now and saying stuff like they're investing x amount in y is always dodgy IMO.

As a matter of interest, what exactly is the effort required to join a new club?
