Well Last of Us ended on an anticlimatic note. What amazes me about it is the amount of discussion about the ending when really there should be none.

You get that a lot for games/movies that pretend to be interesting when they really aren't. Case in point: Inception's ending.

Well the discussion is hardly Naughty Dog's fault, is it (although I've seen some really worthwhile critiques of the game overall)? I thought it ended on the perfect note - a worthwhile, intriguing character beat. Unlike most storytellers, they're aware of the power of a cut to black, the simple emotional capabilities of a close-up. It achieved a satisfying mix between uncertainty and conclusiveness, ending on a quiet moment than some hyperactive one - most important, one that is endearingly self-contained. I had several issues with the game, but the ending wasn't one. I don't think it leaves a hell of a lot of room for interpretation either, but I don't consider that a particularly bad thing given its effectiveness.

That said, they probably should have ended on the
    giraffe
    bit ;)

Going to be in town tomorrow afternoon and was thinking of checking out Rage and Retropolis as I still havent managed get to either.

Can anyone tell me where abouts they are?

Also I'm buying a Gameboy advance sp - 001 model unfortunately but it was very cheap and will allow me to start buying old gameboy games so which would be better for gameboy games do you reckon out of the two shops?

I never had a gameboy as a kid but my mates did. I remember loving an old wwf game and ducktales in particular so they'll be first on my list of purchases.

edit... heres the video that made me finally pull the trigger on purchasing a Gameboy SP for old gameboy games.

    Its some collection!

It's no means a Mass Effect 3 ending. It ended well and was satisfying it's just the hype I heard about it I was expecting something mindblowing.

Wish I could see the end. It crapped out on me at 96%.

Slowly working my way back up but fully expecting to hit the same bug again.

Well if you can't go for an ags101, why not get a micro? There super cool and nearly as affective as the nomad with the ladies. Way better screen as well.

afaik the Micro isnt backwards compatible with original Gameboy or GBC games.

I'll get the ags 101 in time when funds are not so tight.
This one will do until then. I'm buyin the SP as apposed to an original gameboy or gameboy colour mainly due to it being rechargable but the other reason being the screen.

The original gameboys and the Micro are hard to find without loads of scratches on the screen whereas the SP's are generally in better order cause of the screen being protected when they've been dropped etc...

That said I'll probably pick up a Micro at some point.

To be honest I just really fancy getting started and the SP is so cheap its a no brainer just to get it so I can start pickin up some games to play.

Dunno, I think I played a couple on it but I could be wrong.

@murphyebass - Just found the screen to be crap on the ags001 and virtually unusable at times.
Nice to see someone going down the gameboy route though, as it can be a neglected system at times despite the massive game range with has some excellent games.
Trying to find information online at times can be very difficult compared to the likes of the sues, saturn, etc.
I'm curious to know what were exclusives to each region but cannae seem to find any clues.

Well my handheld of choice of late has been the Neo Geo Pocket Colour so if I can deal with the screen on that I think I can deal with the SP until I can afford the 101 model. They're just so expensive. You can pay 80quid to get one shipped from America on ebay but thats just more than I want to spend currently. I will definately get one in time though. Maybe a xmas present :D

Yeah I never owned the original gameboy so this is definately something I'm looking forward to getting in to.

I have a NGPC, DS and PSP at home and its definately the NGPC that gets played the most by a long shot as well even though I've plenty of games for the other two systems.

The only problem with the NGPC is the very limited amount of games albeit the quality of the titles is savage and for the likes of fighters it cant be beat.

I'm looking forward to more platforming goodness on the gameboy. Likes of Mario, Ducktales and I'm sure huge amounts of others.

But is that any fault of the game itself rather than a case of 'believing the hype'? Certainly one of the impressive things about the ending is that ND choose to end on a quiet character note over any sort of 'mindblowing' dramatics. Expecting an ending to blow your mind is a troublesome exercise, as even some of the greatest conclusions in history choose a considered whisper over a big bang. You say yourself the game ends in a satisfying way, insinuating that you liked it - isn't that ultimately more important than some typical Internet hyperbole?

Disappointment is a perfectly reasonable response if that's what you felt (I don't get that impression from your posts), but its always important to filter out hype especially when it comes to games. I thought it was a modest, clever way to end the game, but I don't see any value in rushing to declare it the best thing ever or even engaging in some sort of futile ranking exercise. It is what it is, and it IMO succeeds.

Pokemon yellow was an awful time drain for me. Its also the only one I played really. Try and stay away from thwt sort of game as I get addicted.

Yep I think it was more believing the hype than anything. It was a satisfying and perfectly fine conclusion that didn't feel out of place. One part though
in the surgery I felt was taken from Spec Ops and was done a hell of a lot better in that game.

    You see,
    This is why love Doom.
Never see anyone analysing the plot minutiae there.
Don't expect Retr0 to be delving deep (snigger) into Galguns deep dark depths either.

    Master of the Universe

Anyone here know much about Team Fortress 2 hats? I have a code for the Oculus Rift VR hat and they seem to be selling for a few quid on ebay.

Not sure whether to sell now or wait a bit longer. Hmmm. No need for it anyway.

    So atlus have gone bankrupt.

Hopefully something can be done to save them!

Well not Atlus. I'm sure they will come out of it ok considering they are the only profitable entity of Index. I just hope no clowns end up buying them.

Speaking of Atlus, WHERE THE HELL IS THE EU RELEASE DATE FOR DRAGON'S CROWN!? Have they even a distributor?

I popped in New Super Mario Bros Wii U there last night, anxious to get it complete before Luigi U arrives next month.
And what I find delights, finally, a Ninty game patched with Wii U Pro Controller support.
It's probably a minor thing to most but I think it makes everything... better.
I have been playing it on a combination of Wii-mote and Wii pad but this feels much much better, although the right hand stick and button arrangement feel a bit strange, being juxtaposed compared to my trusty 360 controller.

    Anywho, there we go.
Heading to Clarehall, buying pavlova materials with the wife, might sneak into Gamestop and buy some more Wii games, more that'll never get played :(

For anyone interested in an Ouya, you may wanna hold off. It seems Google are soon gonna weigh-in proper on the console-market.

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/195257/Google_is_developing_its_own_Android_game_console__Report.php
The Wall Street Journal [subscription required] reports that Google is venturing into the microconsole fray itself with its own Android-based video game console.

Wall Street Journal sources suggest the move is motivated not simply by the recent launch of the Ouya and the upcoming GameStick but also on expectations that Apple will be introducing game support with an upcoming version of Apple TV.

Google is also reportedly developing a replacement for the Nexus Q media device, as well as a potential Android-powered watch, according to the WSJ report. The devices are intended to be designed and marketed within Google, and more information is expected about them later this year.

Be great if most of them had that support option as I bleedin' despise motion control in games and I've mostly missed out on the Wii because of it. Very sad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Another hater of motion controls here, the Wii imo would have been a far more enjoyable system with a regular type controller. I detest the Wii mote

It got patched for pro controller support? Excellent.

I must get back to completing that myself, I gave up when I got my WiiU back from repair and my saves had been wiped. :-(

My Nintendo thingy anyway is MrVestek if ya fancy adding me!

Just finished 4 days of hardcore coding writing an AI pathfinding routine on a hex grid from scratch. Finally squashed the last bug last night. I need sleep :(

It kind of makes me appreciate how much goes into even simple enemy movement and AI that people take for granted.
