Instead of arguing over having NFC or a wifi Direct/Air Drop system consumers should be demanding both as your not always in a wifi area.

    What's wrong with having both?

Although I wouldn't object to a device having NFC, I just can't see much of a purpose to it YET.

Air Drop is being cultivated in typical Apple fashion. It's being extended and enhanced little by little to an ever increasing audience.

The vast majority of current NFC enabled phones will be landfill without the original owners ever realising that feature was present.

It'll be interesting to see how secure the new re-activation feature is. If it's as good as it sounds, then thieves will have far harder time shifting stolen iPhones. Their only option will be to sell them for spare parts.

Or hopefully not steal them at all...

Does contacting your network and reporting the phone stolen and having the IMEI number blocked, not render the phone useless already?

    Pretty much, until it's exported.

No, because Find My iPhone has to be enabled. As we know from this forum, most people don't take the time to enable it or find out how it works until after their phone is stolen.

Tracking features are a waste of time anyway. They are nothing more than a placebo for users. A thief will always be able to disable them. Firmware-related security features like iCloud re-activation in iOS 7 are a far better way to discourage thieves.

Yes, but only on Irish networks.

Given the proliferation of each, you're more likely to be near wifi than NFC.

Most (if not all) smartphones have WiFi, the same can't be said about NFC.

Hopefully there's an option to disable automatic updates for specific apps. Some developers simply can't be trusted with this. (Can anyone with the beta confirm?)

With iCloud Keychain, Apple have once again rendered a popular third party app redundant for most users. But I'm glad. 1Password have been milking their customers of late. The app never worked too well on iOS anyway and the latest version is ghastly looking.

The phone's create their own adhoc wifi network and transfer data that way, you don't need a router.

I can definitely find an option to turn Automatic Updated Off/On, don't see anything to do that at the individual App level though.

I do feel a bit sorry for 1Password, I've been using it across a few machines/devices and found it really useful.

NFC is a waste of time and resources until NFC starts to be used somewhere useful.

    Hardly a wast of time..

Lack of Safari integration made using those password apps a bit of a pain to use - (Dashlane anyway).

After sleeping on it, I still dont like the icons, the music app takes longer for me to play an album, through the artist page. Some of the bottom tab bar icons have text in apps while others dont. It's very inconsistant, but again its Beta 1.

Yes you can turn off auto updates, but not for specific apps.

The title of that article should be 'What could you potentially do with NFC if it were implemented anywhere'.

NFC could be really useful, if it ever becomes widespread enough.

I only bought it while it was half price a few days ago. It's a good app, and I still think it will be useful for storing passwords for other things, laptop login info, bank account numbers etc. It just won't be as useful.

Also I thought the whole point of Airdrop is it creates its own Wifi Network. I actually did see a mention of Hotspot 2.0 on one of the keynote slides too, not sure if that has something to do with Airdrop.

    NFC be damned so... :D

Ah put ios7 on my iPhone today at lunchtime. Running very smoothly & it's a very nice update. I've encountered no problems so far but I haven't tried to use every app on me phone.

I bet Apple will add NFC sometime, maybe this year. There is always a feature of the OS which runs on new machines only.

It's used elsewhere. Just not here unfortunately.

To say it's a waste of time just shows a lack knowledge about it.

But it is, if no one uses it.

I fully understand the uses and benefits of NFC, hence the NFC kit sitting about 14" away from my left elbow.

Despite the fact I didn't say NFC was a waste of time (quite the opposite in fact), by your own admission it's not used here which does somewhat diminish its utility.

That's actually a .dmg file?? I just downloaded it now.

Taking me 8 hours to download it? Anymore links?

Its a mockup from a designer. The one on the right is the current ios7 look.

I think the iOS redesign is very nice. It's been a bit quiet in this forum lately! Looking forward to seeing how it looks on the iPad.

Great to see how Haswell is effecting battery life on the Airs as Apple are quite honest about battery life as far as I've seen. Good work out of Intel!

Anyone with iOS 7 installed got any opinions? How is it running, are apps crashing? Any major glitches or effect on battery life?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

Love the redesign. That mockup above - I can see inset style icons and shadows creeping back in. This is not what iOS 7 is about. Reading the developer guidelines this morning they want the UI to be 'unobtrusive' and not compete with the content of what's on screen.

It's not about the design / how it looks but more how it enables the OS to function better by stripping away unecessary detail.
