With all the talk of cracked screens etc and unrepairable phones I think ill take out insurance. Can anyone recommend a phone insurer or a policy? Never got it before but with this phone being pretty much unrepairable I think it will be a worth while investment.

I went with Chill. The One wasn't listed when I ordered, got a land when I find it was twice the price of "regular" phones.

    I used http://www.gadgetinsurance.com/ie/

It's a good bit cheaper than Chill.

Still pretty expensive, €76 for a year including loss. And a €50 excess. I take it the phone value is more than €400, even though I bought it on contract for €200?? As i was to lose it i would need a sim free replacement?

    They're currently about €600.

Who're that crowd underwritten by? Quinn Insurance was "cheap", but they were great fun to claim from. Chill claim to turn around within a day, although I wasn't able to find anyone that had actually claimed from them.

Sorry to throw a cautionary spanner in the works (and its not directed at Davey Devil who is just looking for good cover) but looking at Gadget Insurance's terms and conditions concerns me.

1st any company that charges you a premium rate number to buy their product (or cancel an auto-renewing policy) as they do puts me off going anywhere near them.

2nd they state that "causal loss of a device other than a mobile phone" will not be covered. I know we're talking about the HTC One (it being a mobile) but if you were insuring another device with them it concerns me there is no definition of "casual loss" anywhere in the T&C. It smacks of a loosely defined get-out clause. Some insurance companies in general hate specifics in their T&C's but demand them from the policy holder as it puts the insuree on proof when a claim is made regards the specifics the holder stated at the contracts outset and unburdens the insurer when a claim is lodged as their definition is vague and can be read against the claimant easily.

3rd they say the policy will not cover "rust, humidity or damp corrosion of any kind". Again it appears they are trying to avoid the use of the term 'water damage' which is very familiar to phone users. Modern phones use sensors to detect water/moisture egress and if diagnostics show these have been triggered this invalidates your claim. These sensors can trigger but the phone can continue working for months or years. You'll still be paying but a year later they can just say the cover isn't valid as the sensors triggered.

4th they say they offer a "Premium Refund Guarantee" during the 14 day cooling off period (less admin costs/incidentals). What. Its not for any company to decide whether they will or will not withhold monies paid on foot of a contract of this form during a cooling off period. Thats why its a cooling off period. This is frankly PR BS.

This is a statutory requirement (ie the minimum the law demands) to permit the insuree to withdraw without financial penalty. Its as 'premium' as a McDonalds hamburger is cuisine.

S.I. No. 853/2004 — European Communities (Distance Marketing of Consumer Financial Services) Regulations 2004
    See Section 11(4) here

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2004/en/si/0853.html

Any company spinning this form of crap in their T&C's imho should be avoided like the plague.

I've never heard anything positive about gadget insurance companies.

Best bet would be to see if your bank offer insurace or get it covered in your home insurance policy.

The excess on home insurance policies renders them useless for small claims.

Ulster does mobile insurance but only on their uFirst premium accounts.

€95 excess on the mobile phone cover and €10 a month though for the ufirst Ulster Bank account. Although you do also get 25% discount on events and travel insurance for one euro trip a year

Anyone successfully get this phone subsidised on a 12 month contract with any network? Three and eMobile's prices for 12 month contracts are ridiculous.

With Meteor on €35 pm for 12 months

Can anyone recommend a running armband to hold the new HTC One?
    Can only find generic stuff

EDIT: - bought the suggestion from this thread

Is the price not something ridiculous like €349-379?

It's coming down to final decision time between the S4 and HTC One.

Both of these phones are amazing, and after having the S3 for the last year I am tempted to get the One after seeing so many raving reviews about it.

But I do have a question first then will make or break my final choice. I've read that Blinkfeed cannot be removed, and I don't know how I feel about that.

For example, I've used Nova Launcher to give my S3 more of a "vanilla" feel to it. If I install Nova, will that remove/hide Blinkfeed or not?
Also, how is the battery life really? My S3 would go a day or day and a half on standard usage, lots of browsing, music and taking pictures mostly.

Installing Nova or any other launcher will remove blinkfeed.

Battery life has been rated as better than - equals the S3 .

It doesn't need to be removed, just disable all the feeds, make screen 2 your home screen, and don't swipe left.

I picked up one of these this morning - my S3 was really getting on my wick and I liked the look of this. I've also had HTCs before and just like the solid feel.

Got a VF PAYG handset in Carphone Warehouse with a trade in on my S3. While there's a VF splashscreen and a few apps, the phone was unlocked.

Very impressed so far and I haven't really got stuck in yet. Oh, and it's very loud!

Karen, I have the One X which I dropped and cracked the screen on the lower right quarter. None of the glass fell away. I put a screen protector on it to keep the screen in, sort of, one piece,

It has worked away happily for 6 months or so. I've checked in a number of local repair places here in Cork for quotes to repair the screen. It would cost approx €180.00

I recently spoke to a pal of mine who runs one of the better phone repair shops, one which has a very good reputation. He told me that screen replacement is very hit and miss: it is very hard to get right one the One X.

So, if you are going to invest in a screen replacement, I'd suggest get HTC in the UK to do it. That way you have some assurance that it will work out.

Thanks , I think I'll stick with it for now. It's only cracked down the right side , the bottom of the crack crosses over to the left but no glass came away so I'll get a screen protector for now to stop it getting any worse.
Just did a bit of reading up on putting a new screen in. Near impossible. So I'll just have to make do with a cracked screen. So annoying as my case was due to be delivered but got delayed. Sickened.

The day I let mine fall my Husband brought me home a case he'd bought for me in town for a fiver  Too late :(

    Fair enough then.

Seeing as I should find out about getting a replacement phone soon enough, I think I'll go for the One.

I admit I loved my S3, but it'll be nice to have a change.

II loved my s3 as well, but it started to cause trouble and I decided to switch to the HTC. Have it a week now.
Couldn't deal with sense so I quickly installed nova launcher.
Wasn't sure about getting a phone with a smaller screen but it hasn't bothered me.
Camera features are very good. Screen is brilliant and the sound is terrific.

The feel of the phone is fantastic, sick of Samsung after s2 and s3.

Only negative for me so far is the battery. It's just about as good if not worse than the s3 and I miss not being to replace the battery.

My S3 was sent off for repair for the 3rd time recently, so I can swap it for another phone for the same value or pay the difference.

If I go for the S4 it'll cost me about €60 or so, the One will be free.
Both are great phones and I am worried I'll regret my choice.

    Terrible first world problems.

No idea. The guy in the shop thought my phone was locked to VF so there's not even any point in asking in the shop. In any case I was just going to get it unlocked online.

Even better, increase your home screens to 5, make the middle one home and you can scroll left once without hitting BlinkFeed :-P

Vodafone just gave me an early upgrade :-)

Just a quick question, how does the screen fair in sunlight?
My current one X isn't great, it's crap tbh.
I have a note 2 and it's decent enough, usable anyway.

Anyone able to compare for me?
If we get some sun :p

What store did you get it from?

Very good, better than the One X in my experience, can even see it with sunglasses a lot of the time. They may not all be the same though, they're manufactured in at least three different places and I'm pretty sure I've seen it said that several different displays are used.

The only annoyance I find is that if you are wearing sunglasses, in the car using satnav for example, there's a slight sheen on the screen, much like the Renault windscreens. Hadn't seen that before on a phone screen.
