Well, balbriggan market was a bust.
I passed on a DS phat for 25, think I might regret that!
But there was feck all else there, just a lot of ps2, ps3 and xbox and 360 games but nothing interesting.
    Bum!

Seems to be the standard these days. :(

Was in Fairyhouse a few times recently, nothing but common PS2/Xbox stuff. One dealer has some retro stuff but priced a bit high given the really rough condition of the stuff.

I gave up on that market a couple of years ago.
The was only one seller of retro stuff and it was all at RAGE prices.
In future I'll just save my pennies and cent and journey into Retropolis!

In the end, I did not buy anything retro. I just got this 936350_10200300644093546_776906047_n.jpg

With all due respect to Retropolis, when the RAGE first came onto the scene they too had keen & attractive enough pricing. That changed though when they established themselves a customer base.

On the topic of the RAGE - and I personally think they get an over-rough time of it here - I think they've settled on approach that aims to attract more casual, nostalgic audiences than hardcore collectors. That's basically the bricks & mortar business model - the prices in Tower Records, for example, are very high compared to online prices, but they're still running a successful, popular store because people do like the luxury of browsing and impulse purchasing without the waiting time for delivery.

We don't have to agree with it, and certainly the bricks & mortar model is collapsing with only the strong few surviving. But the RAGE have been going for a good few years now, and have clearly realised they can sell at a price five-ten euro higher than the Ebay average and still run a pretty successful store (although I'd say a lot of their income is from record sales too). You just have to look at their facebook page (if you haven't been banned :P) to see their audience isn't the type that scours ebay and specialist sites for PCBs, and I know a load of my friends who would never post here love going in and having a look around. The last few times I've purchased stuff in there I've had five-ten euro knocked off the price at the register anyway - they'll always be happy to help out regular customers or those who know what they're talking about.

They're far from perfect - undoubtedly some of their prices, especially for ahem 'rarer' items, do drift towards the silly - but for the most part the regular vitriol they attract here leaves is only partially deserved. What they do they do successfully, and no-one is forcing anyone to shop there. IMO they're good for sourcing the occasional common-enough title at a perfectly fair price, and the odd MUSHA Aleste bargain too.

€15 for loose GB carts? If people are willing to pay that much to wallow in nostalgia then more power to RAGE for exploiting it...but at those prices they're as open to be laughed at as much as someone on Adverts with wild pricing gets laughed at here. But those prices are just pure greedy, not a business model.

On the other hand, keeping your prices realistic & competitive would be a far more beneficial approach, as would exposing your coverage nationwide with a €200 website & store/inventory (don't even start me on the phone/facebook & paypal 'ordering' process they have). I'd be far more inclined to shop there if it was easier to do, & thats pricing aside.

They've had the monopoly though until now, so with a competitor on the horizon, lets see how well the business model holds up

Boo! Don't install the latest Dark Souls patch if you have the DLC installed on the PS3.

My graphics are all messed up, can't see any magic or lighting effects.

Playing in offline mode works though. Currently going up against Gravelord Nito.

Retropolis... that elusive bastard! I went looking for it a few weeks ago an got nothing but lost and blistered feet.

What annoys me about buying online is the majority of stuff on ebay.ie is really overpriced and the selection is minute unless you want to pay excessive shipping charges. Stuff on ebay.co.uk is usually grand but most of the ads only have options for postage to the UK. Would parcel motel fix that?

Say there's a listing for a gameboy game and its 5 pounds with 1 pound postage, can you use parcel motel to get it sent to their base in the north? I was looking at their site earlier and it only seemed to mention listings that had free postage. The 3.50 charge seems slighty high per item aswell imo.

Makes ya sick when you watch game chasers and the like to see decent titles going for 5 dollars everywhere in the states.

I haven't been in the rage since I don't live in Dublin but the general stuff I see written about them is kind of putting me off.

Edit: Basically what I'm trying to say is Ireland is sh1te for retro game collecting :)

    Yup.
Is there a UK address I can use to avail of free UK delivery?

Yes. Simply give the Parcel Motel UK Address (below) as your delivery address and your parcel will arrive at your local Parcel Motel in Ireland. All you will need to pay is the Parcel Motel transaction charge.

    Your Name
    Your PM ID
    Parcel Motel
    1A McKinney Rd
    Newtownabbey

Ohh god I remember trying this out back in the day, I think they published that cheat originally in Official Dreamcast Magazine at the time.

Is there also a cheat to change the soundtrack to something else?
Something with a lower suckage quotient?

You know, when you guys go to hell, and you will, the only songs on the Jukebox of Hell will be Offspring tunes.
I, on the other hand, am also going to hell. Unfortunately I'm getting an eternity of Streets of Rage playthroughs, man I sure regret murdering all those grannies now!

Anyone read this article on Eurogamer? Nintendo possibly looking to get iOS games ported to the Wii-U! Desperate times call for desperate measures or could it turn out to be a good move?

No details on titles or pricing if it's even true, but assuming it is, I can't see the console owning folk forking out more money for a port of a mobile game. Maybe once or twice out of curiosity but nothing to suddenly make the Wii-U a must have.

Is there any decent console games on the horizon for it? What say you Wii-U owners? All five of you. :p

Well, given the well spring of innovation the mobile world has been, with low cost of entry and a wide indie scene, I think Ninty are dead right courting these people for development.
I have a feeling that Nintendo are not seeing Angry Birds or Canabalt be ported over, but rather that the individual devs come up with games that will take advantage of the common features of the Wii U controller and also the new possibilities the Wii U might offer them.

The iOS, and to a lesser extent the Android, are producing plenty of good games to interest gamers, in turn this creativity has informed the likes of PSN and XBLA to make low priced but great games too, why shouldn't Nintendo tap that?

Yeah it's a good move on their part I think. Hopefully we will see a few decent games come out from the indie devs that take advantage of what the Wii U has to offer and not just ports.

I've a really low interest in mobile phone/tablet games, so no, this doesn't really appeal to me. The quality to scutter ratio on Android/iOs is tipped very much so in the scutter camp.

Very true, but there is money there.

True that. Though it could be a double edged sword at this early stage, flooding the Wii U market with scutter when there's barely any other reason to own the damn thing right now. People might start thinking the Wii U is just a glorified tablet, {which at this point I suppose it basically still is}, rather than a proper current gen console.

Hopefully you're both right but "professional-use conversion software" doesn't sound like anything that would entice mobile devs to create Wii-U specific games, more like a tool for making a conversion of an existing mobile game that bit easier.

If I was a mobile dev then I'd most likely try and convert some of my popular titles and see how they sell. I would imagine writing a Wii-U game from scratch would be much more costly than developing a new mobile game and your target audience is much smaller.

There's some incredible examples of how to waste dc electricity that pass under the guise of 'games' on tablets & phones man. Actually, quite a lot of examples

Well, I wouldn't mind an expanded Temple Run 2 appearing on a WiiU, the killer would be the price, if I find myself asked to pay 10 for a game that costs 2 euro on iTunes.
But, didn't I read that devs have control of eshop pricing?

What are peoples opinions on printing out replacement labels for damaged carts? I have a copy of Super Metroid that's horribly sun damaged to the point the entire label is blue! Was going to print out a label and stick it on a sports cart and slap in the pcb. That blue is just too ugly :(

Replacement label: http://i40.tinypic.com/2zgubnd.png had to brush it up abit in photoshop, only decent one I could find online
