Usually have some in Tesco I think, and all good off licences. Also, the craft bars will have some. I discovered 80 Shilling in WJK.

Im in Waterford where the craft scene is pretty poor. Must keep an eye out in Tesco though as I hadn't noticed them there. Paid €3.09 for the Seaweed ale in Ardkeen stores.

Craft scene poor in Waterford? Isn't one of the best producers from your county!!

Off to the black sheep later.
Always end up drinking Galway Red which is nice but I'd like to try something else.
I like the english ales (red)
Not too mad on the pale ales (maybe I havent found a nice one)
    Draught preferably?
    Any suggestions most welcome.
    Cheers.
Dark Arts, Leann Folainn or maybe another stout or Porter they have.

I'm also not a pale ale fan. Much prefer malty dark beers, maybe you will too

    Sounds good.
I will give them a go and report back...
    Cheers.

Managed to get the last bottle of Dungarvan Coffee and Oatmeal Stout from a Cork Offie last weekend. I enjoyed it last night. Without a doubt the best beer to come out of Dungarvan, it wasn't as nice as the cask though and I felt any taste of oatmeal was cometely overpowered by the strong coffee flavour, not complaining though, I love coffee. Dungarvan should really brew this full time IMO.

    Is 5AM Saint an IPA?

I'd say it's more of an APA (Amber Pale Ale), I don't know if they're considered a sub-category of IPAs or not. They tend to be hoppy and bitter like an IPA, but with a bit more malty sweetness, and hints of darker red fruits where an IPA might have hints of citrus.

It's not a huge distinction obviously, but if you are trying to find very similar stuff it would help to focus more on the APAs than IPAs.

Hotels can have a few bars, and smaller function rooms which are poorly stocked. Same with pubs having lounges and smaller areas or upstairs areas. I have gotten barmen to bring in 4-5 bottles from another section/floor/room to the one I am going to be in for the night.

Also sometimes you as some young one for a beer and they take a glance and say there is none, then a more senior barman might say there is.

I remember in bakers corner I went to the quiet lounge as it was busy out front, and saw they had a better selection there. Another time in bakers the guy went to the cellars to get my bottles.

So don't just glance and presume there is none.

Bakers also do corkage on bottles from their offie now, so I would say you could try asking for beer from the offie. Could try in any pub with an attached offie.

    Point taken, Rubadub.

The only addendum I will make this time is that I asked what the ale/bottled beer range was when the orders were taken for the wedding toast. The foreign waitress who took the order at the table went off to check. Ten minutes later a man came up to me, said he was the bar manager and that she was confused as to what I was asking. I said to him that I was asking what bottled ale/beer they had and he said none bar Smithwicks :)

Hopefully the range has moved on since then :)

Anyone know if there's anything interesting in Brew Dock at the moment, heading in there later for a few scoops.
Clotworthy Dobbin on cask, don't mind if I do

Funny cos I managed to get the last bottle of the same in Sweeneys in glasnevin. Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to it later!

I had some bottles Jarl , Ruthless Rye and Dungarvan Rye. The Jarl is fantastic as usual, really hoppy but low in alcohol too which is great. Ruthless Rye really good , must make a rye beer someday. The dungarvan rye was very poor, usual twang I get with their beers. A few of us tried it but just not for us.

After much indecision in the offy, got a couple of bottles of Holzar Bier. Started out; meh, ended up, yum!

APA usually means American Pale Ale and applies to beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Odell 5 Barrell, Flying Dog's Doggystyle, and so on.

5am Saint is just a typical American styple Amber Ale, it's very malty and very hoppy, it's lovely.

That is great stuff. I used to get that all the time in Deveneys in Dundrum

Started of with white gypsy pilsnerband then moved on to 8 degrees knockmealdown porter.
Switched then to fransikaner and then onto 2 clothworthy dobbin.
Now drinking a porterhouse chocolate truffle stout.

Exams mightn't be finished but feck it ive been dying for a few drinks the last few weeks so making the most of it. Screw the study, nice beer is to be had!

Yep. Odell's Red Ale is in the same vein as 5AM.

Having a Sanda Blonde IPA by Fynes. Beautiful beer. Very similar to Twisted Hop. Next up is their Black IPA.

My sister once compared St. Lupulin by Odells as a beer that, "Smells like a garden where the parents had no children and concentrated on the garden instead."

Had a Torquemada Fray Tomas Stout from Castile. Matured in French oak apparently. Far too bubbly for a stout. The taste was nice and malty. The smell was quite homebrew-y. Not one of the better Spanish craft beers I've tried.

The Sanda Black IPA is lovely. I'm really loving the spate of Black IPA's that seem to be around at the moment, although it does seem the the 'merkins have been doing the style a lot longer but in a different guise, i.e. really hoppy stouts and porters.

    Was given this :D

I haven't had any of these before.

Please be quiet in the morning!

Had a couple of pints of Renaissance Age of Raisin ale, delicious, the subtlety of the raisin flavour is just right.
Renaissance Voyager IPA was good too.
Fork & Brewer Base Isolator was class. What a kick.

Really good beers here in Wellington NZ.

Had a Punk and 5am Saint in O'Neills yesterday evening, followed by a Rogue Yellow Snow and a West Kerry ale at the Leinster match.
Then on to the Black Sheep where I had a Leann Folain, Clotworthy Dobbin and a Metalman pale ale to round off the night.
Good grief, I felt like I'd been assaulted with a baseball bat this morning.

Might have a can of Punk now, take the edge off it. :P

There must be a reason why people have, for years, said "don't eat the yellow snow" - same must go for drinking it.

Yeah it's not great. Still, the West Kerry drink more than made up for it.

Heading to Belfast tomorrow, anywhere recommended for good beer selection?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
