After all my hassle the other night setting up google play music they go and release it here. All that work for nothing ! :)
Ha, I know. If only there was a clue at the time.

What's everyone using to root their devices?

I was thinking of giving this a whirl to save time and make the process easier:

Will the phone really benefit from being rooted? I did it loads with my last phone and just think maybe I should keep this one pure and untouched :o

It depends. I intend on using Titanium to backup some stuff from my I9000 and that needs a rooted device to operate on.

Rooting your device won't really...dirty it up, shall we say? It will just let you use certain apps that will extend the functionality of the existing firmware. You can install custom firmwares if you want but that's not what rooting is all about. If you don't need to do it, then don't, that's the general rule. But as long as you can go back to stock (unroot and re-lock the bootloader) then I'm willing to chance it.

Anyone rooted yet and which method did you use?

    I followed this guide:
    http://forums.androidcentral.com/nexus-4-rooting-roms-hacks/224861-guide-nexus-4-unlock-root.html

It was straightforward & I only wanted it so I could transfer my apps & data & have access to system files. It doesn't install a recovery, you boot into it though the pc, so you can still get ota updates.

What did people use to contact fireworks merchants? Might contact them tomorrow and see what the story is. A week since I ordered now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭DECEiFER

I used email and I also phoned them. You might get a quicker response if you do the latter.

The number is on the top right:

Just a word of warning about Flubit, I ordered a 16GB Nexus 4 on the 21st March which I am still waiting on. They advised me that it would be dispatched on 4th and they would send on the tracking info. I heard nothing until Monday when I was told that they had shipped an 8GB. They blamed the mistake on Google Play but I received a receipt thing with the phone which shows the price that was paid which was £239 so can't see how it was Googles fault.

They offered to refund the difference and reimburse me for the shipping costs but I decided to just buy the 8gb and the 16gb to save the hassle so anyone want an 8gb Nexus 4?? It has been opened so I'll sell it for €270 and you can collect any time from Friday.

I used a toolkit from xda. took about 2 mins to unlock boot loader and root.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688

I definitely recommend rooting. Even if you don't flash custom ROMs etc.. Rooting and unlocking etc wipes the data from the device. Best to do it at beginning when you've no data on the device. Then if unauthorised or non play ireland apps come along or if new ROMs of interest come along you can dabble without any great fear

Saw that one earlier. It's good to have some options but at the same time, without experiencing any of them, it can be confusing to know which one to give the first shot to.

Forgive me if it has been answered. Is there any negative to buying this via the US (a friend). He would then send it on to me.

The time and cost of shipping the device. Plus, if customs caught wind of it (even if it's marked as a gift) you could be liable for tax. Otherwise it wouldn't be any different.

Ya he can ship for free id happily take it out of the box to avoid tax. He could just put in a note saying something about me leaving it behind.

Seems to be €230ish for the 8gb on the US site.

Is that including the state tax rate? It does work out cheaper for them stateside and as long as you can wait out the shipping and customs aren't on it, you should be just fine.

Otherwise, Parcel Motel and Flubit are the best odds in town. Nobody has mentioned having their order rejected through Flubit. That is, Google have cancelled some of Flubit's orders but Flubit just reorder on our behalf if that happens. For me, that happened, and Flubit gave me £55 back for my troubles and reordered (which happened last Thursday). Since they reordered, the process has moved along quite swiftly. Overall because of the backlog at Google and the cancellation, it took a bit longer (I ordered it on March 26th and it's currently on the way to my designated PM location in Limerick) but I'm pretty happy that it all worked out, considering that when I ordered twice through Google directly prior, they cancelled both attempts.

EDIT: Sorry just one more thing. If there's a problem with the device, I'm not sure if they'd require you to ship it back to the US or if they'd be okay with you using the UK (telling them you moved there or something). If not, then you could be seeing a major disadvantage should something go wrong with the device. It's definitely worth making inquiries about.

    From flubit:

Unfortunately there is a backlog of orders with the supplier due to the excessive demand.

I am in constant contact with the supplier and will update you when I have a dispatch date.

At the moment I would expect your order to be dispatched at the beginning of next week

    Best regards

    David

That's the guy I was dealing with. He came through for me in the end so stick with it.

Have a look at the original Flubit offer. I only spotted after ordering that the offer said 8GB instead of the 16GB I requested. Flubit said it was only a typo, but I was half -expecting an 8Gb to arrive.
In the end Google cancelled the order on Flubit, and the replacement will be here tomorrow, so hopefully dodged a bullet.

I got an email saying they'll be looking to dispatch it on Friday. I doubt it though. I'd say next week.

    Sigh.

I'm glad to see a good few of you got sorted.

To be fair, I got mine about 60mins earlier than I usually get my PM deliveries. Mine usually arrive around this time...

Who know's you might get a mail/text momentarily...

Ah sure, I know. It could literally come in the second I post this or at 4am. The fact that I know it'll be here tonight or tomorrow is comforting enough. :)

He must be the only person answering emails there! I have yet to get or hear of anyone getting a reply from anyone else.

I rang them up last week and spoke to a few ladies, who both said they needed to have "someone" call me back. Then David did call me back later that evening, which was when he told me that Google had cancelled my order and that he'd give me £55 as compensation while reordering for me that evening.

Got the notification before 6am but only noticed it at around 7am, so I finally have it in my hands!

Some of you might be a bit sickened about what I'm about to say.

First of all, I have the new model complete with nubs and smaller ring around the lens. But that's not the kicker. I was looking inside the settings and went into the various menus. I checked to see how much of that measly 8GB they'd left me with in the storage options and I noticed it said 12GB free. Either Linux has revisited 1993 and implemented MS-DOS DoubleSpace or Stacker or a modern equivalent, or they sent me the 16GB model. Looking at the box and delivery docket, they indeed did send me the 16GB model!
(don't worry, I didn't for one second believe that drive compression was the cause)

So to sum it up: the cost of the 8GB model - the percentage off that Flubit gave me - £55 from Flubit back for waiting an extra few days = the best Nexus 4 16GB deal in town!

Go on, admit, it was worth the wait and the grief :)

    Nice one though. Enjoy!
