Is that not illegal? And more importantly, quite dangerous.

he left it outside to partially freeze t and removed the ice from the bucket. its not actually distilling and its perfectly safe.

    its how eizbocks are made.

Isn't this how very strong beers are produced? Sink the Bismarck and the like?

Irish law makes no distinction between distillation methods. It is actually distilling.

Was gifted a few nice presents for my birthday.. Friends know me well!!

    White Gypsy Imperial Stout
    White Gypsey Belgian Dubbell
    Mickkeller Farmhouse IPA
    Brewdog Tokyo
    And a few others!

The mickkeller was the only one i've tapped into.. Lovely smell but a strange after taste and very carbonated.

Haven't tried any of them yet but am looking forward to them

It was actually even smaller, I only had about 1.75l left, so it was done win a plastic bottle in the freezer.

With the volumes involved, I really don't see how it could have been dangerous, unless my beer was **** to begin with.

I don't want to be perpetuating illegal info, so google will tell you.

The term distillation applies only to the method of separating mixtures based on difference of volatility of components in a boiling liquid.

Fractional Freezing (how Eisbocks are made) is not distillation, and is 100% safe (well, baring potential bacterial contamination). I doubt it would be possible for customs and excise to even try and bring charges against anyone for making an Eisbock by applying the law in regards to distillation.

It is fairly safe, you might get a worse hangover thats all. I would consdier traditional distillation safer, toxicity wise.

I made an old post about it here
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=71436252&postcount=20
"Distiller" means a person who manufactures spirits in Saorstát Éireann whether by distillation or any other process and "distillery" means the entered premises of a distiller.

However I mention the 22% limit in that post I linked, I am not sure if this means freeze distilled stuff is OK below that limit.
    a) in subsection (1) of section 73 by substituting the following for the definition of “spirits”:

“ ‘spirits’ means any product which exceeds 1.2% vol and which is—

    (a) distilled ethyl alcohol,

    (b) an alcoholic beverage the full alcohol content of which is the result of a process of distillation,

    (c) any other product falling within CN Code 2207 or 2208, even when such product forms part of a product which is not an alcohol product, or

    (d) any beverage exceeding 22% vol,

and includes any such product which contains a nonalcoholic product, whether in solution or not;”,

I've tried about 10 beers in the last few weeks and this is without doubt my favorite. Beautiful. Pity my local stopped stocking it.

    Spaten Munich Beer

    spaten__89384.png

Nice smooth beer with a moderate carbonation. The head seems to dissipate after a while but a flavorsome and easy to drink beer from Munich.

Aye, that picture above is a little misrepresentative of the head which as I mentioned dissipates relatively quickly.

It's almost always on special offer in Dunnes.

Sadly my local Dunnes has a terrible selection for some reason. Must get to a O'Breins soon. Also thought I heard talk that Lidl sometimes stock it, so must check there too. Cheers.

It shouldn't be a problem for them to get it in, warsteiner is readily available from Gleesons. It's on special offer in Dunnes at the moment so they really should have it in stock.

    Southern Tier Oatmeal Imperial Stout

1/2 From the tap, rich and creamy with a lovely firm, dense head. Slightly sweet aroma, such smooth and silky mouthfeel. And so tasty. I've never had an imperial stout on draft, this was a real revelation. Delicious!

Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Brewery's Carraig Dubh. Nice stuff. First time I've seen it on sale this far north in Munster!

Some memorable ones I've had in the last while:

Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus - my first try at a proper lambic. Previously, I struggled to finish a Rodenbach Grand Cru (too much like balsamic vinegar) so I was slightly apprehensive about it being too sour. I actually really liked this - the raspberries give it a sharp tartness, to be expected, but also just a touch of sweetness. The finish is super-dry which keeps you sipping at it. I think it would make a great aperitif drink.

De Molen Hel & Verdoemonis 666 edition - having never tried the regular H&V which seems to be rated very highly, I had high expectations for this but was a little disappointed. It gives off a massive whiff of wood & spirit, presumably from the cognac-soaked oak chips, but taste-wise lacked some of the complexity I expect from big imperial stouts. Not bad by any means, but not as good as Rasputin for example. Now I need to hunt down a standard H&V for comparison.

Stone Ruination IPA - a hop bomb but too harsh and unbalanced for me, had a taste & aroma that bizarrely made me think of the artificial floral smell you get from Persil & Bold detergents.

Stone Sublimely Self-righteous black IPA - Awesome, possibly the nicest BIPA I've had to date. As floral and fresh as any good US IPA initially, but also has a lovely rich and full-bodied character like a stout or strong dark ale. Top drawer.

Had my bottle of Yellow Snow last night, v disappointed. For a beer that receives such good reviews I felt it was average as it gets, nothing distinctive about it bar the hoppy bitterness

I have to be honest, I generally find Rogue beers over-priced and over-hyped, barring the Mocha Porter and the St Rogue Red.
