but I would have to say my favourite OTB piece, was the first interview thay did with US sports journalist Jerry Izenberg.

No way is that off topic.

    Totally agree, that was brilliant.

Is there any way to listen to that again, anyone know?

Remember the time McDevitt asked Gianluca Vialli if Ruud Gullit was "a bit of an a**hole"?

I still think they are more likely to end up taking over 2fm sports show rather than going to Nova or 4fm. RTE have not ruled it out have day

Strange as it may seem, they might actually be heading back to Newstalk

Just noticed the article in the indo today says a spomewoman for Newstalk would neither confirm nor deny that this might be happening.

    Weird alright.

Got some amount of publicity out of it if they do end up going back there.

They'd hardly want to rule anything out though! I have to say the OTB podcast is absolutely rubbish. The Radio show is good but whoever makes the cut for the Podcast shouldn't be there anymore. Like yesterday Gilroy was moving on to talk to Marcotti and the Podcast cuts off mid sentence. I've noticed this with all their podcasts if I miss the show and its irritating as hell!

They’ve done some great boxing pieces over the years. Steve Bunce was always good value when he was on and the Freddie Roach interview they repeated a few times was excellent.

Yeah I heard that as I was listening on the way to work this morning, very annoying. It seems to be very sloppily edited indeed even when Eoin and the lads were still there, my two biggest annoyances after the random cuts half way through are when they forget to leave the ads out and when they include the full outro music that goes on for 2 minutes!?

no, I don't think they ever put it as a podcast, it was a brilliant interview

I'm not convinced about the authenticity of this story despite the quotes from the 2 stations. Each station is separately owned and run and one of the few things they have in common is Castleforbes. Nova story is nonsense as sport is classified as news / current affairs and Nova is decreasing not increasing. 4fm, uuummm hard to call but you never know

As for popularity of OTB, I'm not sure it's ever attracted as large an audience as some people think.

Regarding national or Dublin issue me inked by some, only issue is bottom line not whether it can be picked up in Ballygobackwards .

In and around 40,000 is the accepted figure, except for one book this time last year which had it as high as 50,000. How accurate are the JNLR figures? I don't know.

Assuming there is a choice, opting for a Dublin only station would be a very bad move imo. It would really piss off a lot of listeners outside the capitol, including me. 4fm is not ideal, but if it's not to be 2fm then.....

It had the highest listenership for it's timeslot though, just because 40,000 doesnt compare to 140,000 for George Hook but for different timeslots and a for it being a niche show it competed very well. Retained listeners for longer than other stations into the night.

Was that Colm Parkinson reporting on the Arsenal game tonight?

I just turned on the radio and it sounds suspiciously like him. I had to check to see if I had been drinking

As I have no idea who Colm Parkinson is,could one of you tell me why this is so shocking?

Yeah, I tuned in and thought it was him but when he was talking about soccer I just said "no, shur that cant be him what does he know about soccer"... But it seems like NT were desperate to just get somebody else in to the studio...

Kind of a bit odd that NT should leave themselves in such a vulnerable position that all the presenters of their main show could resign at the same time..

management were probably thinking 'sure Ger can come in and fill in for the time being' without thinking it through. if they accepted the resignations in january in the first place, that would give the sports dept a chance to get a decent group together.
didn't think he did too bad anyway, although i only heard little bits. i think he'd be a good GAA co-commentator, better than murph only not as funny. having said that, the clip of him talking about his only international rules game is hilarious.

Anyone know who did the commentary on the highlights of the galatasaray game on tv3 last night? Sounded a lot like Oisin Langan.

Note: I had been drinking. ;-)

He did some of the 6 nations commentaries for Setanta, so it could well of been him - or you were just drunk.

    What did Vialli say?

I'm pretty sure he just laughed it off. I'd like to hear that interview again though, its been a fair few years at this stage.

Hmm. Has he been on OTB since the lads left? I can't think of any other sports broadcasters still at the station, and he used to do the short lived OTB extra on Fridays for a while. Maybe he's getting fed up there too. Or maybe he likes the breakfast banter with Chris and Nora.

Fed up it is, you'd have to think. ;-)

Yeah, I was just thinking that he's been very underused given the current chaos that Newstalk's sports department must be in.

Lads 4FM isnt a runner full stop purely from a financial viewpoint.

Woolberto seems to be the new guy all right. He has funnier oneliners than Ciaran but maybe not the production ideas.

It probably was him. He has been doing commentary for Setanta on European Games, and TV3 have been using the Setanta commentary on their highlights.

Oisin was drafted into the Sports Team at NT back years ago
Big expectations of him at that time
soon people realised (listeners / NT staff) that Oisin, god love him, is a twat.
Zero sense of humour, awkward chit chatter, bit plankish overall
So slowly but surely hes now being pushed out the door
had his own show, now does the sports news at 5am
    see the trend?

altho the way things are going he might be travelling over to england at weekends to commentate on premiership games

Ya he used to do the weekend show with jerry o Sullivan and the phone in show, seemed to get shown the door effectively when ger gilory came back to sports and when Dave McIntyre covered the commentary...

His San Diego you stay classy outro was cringe and awkward, that's how it sounded but he persisted, that was annoying, but overall I found him to be a very good commentator and he did speak some sense, I don't think he deserves to be sidelined like he has been

Langan will probably be pushed back up the ladder at newstalk now, I could see him presenting shows again. He is a bit 'plankish' and awkward at times but not the worst I've heard in fairness.
