Who is "Joe" that is on tonight?

Tonight is the first night I have listened properly since the guys left. Definitely miss them. Ger Gilroy seems is in an awkward position and feels kinda forced.

Joe Molloy, did the weekend show's with Ger before the lads quit.

Ger's doing his best but the show in it's present format is sorely lacking personality.Joe and the other lad are very dull.

This may be a little off topic concerning the news of resignation on the show recently but I have to comment on the format of Off the Ball for a college assignment but I can't find scheduling information anywhere. I know it is/was broadcast between 7pm - 10pm but how was that broken up? Are there particular time slots allotted to each sport or does a particular day in the week focus on specific sport? Any help would be really appreciated.

Yeah, different days are devoted to different things. I will only get them mixed up if I make an attempt at it but others on here will be able to help you

7.00-7.20 Radios most interrupted man Cian "Boy interrupted" Murtha tried to read out the days sports headlines while being ....eh....interrupted by Eoin "chief sports anchor" McDevitt and Ciaran "gags monkey" Murphy(Murph).

7.20-9.00 Eoin interviewed pundits about various sports - gaa, rugby and just about any other sports story that's in the news or whatever else took their fancy. Murph usually came in for the links, sometimes Ken "Marseille trialist" Early joined them.

    9.00-10.00 The Football Show
9.00-9.26 Ken Early's Newsround which was most about football but had a habit of going off in very unexpected tangents.
9.26-10.00 Eoin and Ken interviews different football pundits/ex players. Very occasionally Ken would sing out the show

    Regular features

Monday - Pat Nevin on the weekends football and Don McClean on Horse Racing.
Tuesday - US Murph discusses US sport, Murphs Country pages...em...pass.
Wednesday - Rugby with Kieth Woods, Gerry Thornley & Co.
Thursday - Thursday night football with John Giles(Eoin adopting the idiot nephew role). Challenge Murph(a quiz where Murph tries to relive his former Blackboard Jungle glory days) and Don McClean again.
Friday - mostly a highlights show

I wonder if any of the old crew will feature on tomorrow night's 'best of' show.

If Colm Parkinson is to become a fixture on the Continuity Off The Ball then I for one won't be listening again.

They are trying to get him in as the rural voice like murph but he's from Portlaoise a town and has probably always been known as a townie

Nope, it's "highlights" from the weekend show instead - which I've absolutely no interest in.

I assume when they do the review of the year (normally st stephens night ornew years eve) they'll just ignore the first two and a half months?Parkinson wrecks my head-Ger was fine at the weekend but it's lacking.

Ger didn't offer any explanation of why this was so. It's a Stalinist rewriting of history: I reckon he's been given orders from on high not to mention the Gang of Five....

I liked that comparison. I was listening in today and Ger was talking to the panel about sports movie's, they mentioned a certain film and he was like " oh yeah well the eh... others in the office have talked about that" fairly sure he was going to sat the OTB lads talked about that.

He can't really win whatever he does. Newstalk were never going to play an extended 'Best of the OTB5' tonight, for former employees who will be in direct competition with Newstalk soon (apparently).

But they might have been better off having no sports show at all tonight, the best of the Weekend only shows how badly the departed lads are missed.

Surprisingly, a rake of the old OTB podcasts are at this moment back on the NT Media Player and linked to from the Continuity OTB Facebook page - even three year old Ford Champions League podcasts!

    OTB team returning to Newstalk?

    http://www.broadsheet.ie/2013/03/20/injury-time/

If the show's time and format remains unchanged, that is some climbdown.

it's only been 2 and a bit weeks so far. this gardening leave seems to be taking forever!

Could very well be true. I still think they were silly to resign en-masse. McDevitt is a very talented broadcaster who would find work handy enough and I still think he will eventually end up as a tv sports anchor - would be a perfect replacement for O'Herlihy and McGurk. McDevitt is the main man, everyone else is just tagging along. The guests on the show knew they were being interviewed by a guy who knew his stuff.

However, where would Ken, Murf and Poshboy Hicks go? I can't imagine the 3 lads having work thrown at them. Ireland is still a very small country. What radio station could afford to take on a team of 5 sports journalists in the current climate? The more I think of it it was a ridiculous decision.

I for one would be happy to have them back. And I certainly wouldn't be changing the time. I listen most evenings but if it started earlier I don't think I'd be bothered. It's actually a great slot for that target audience! If its not broken dont fix it.

In fairness to Gilroy he's doing his best, hard to compete with Eoin McDevitt.

Yeah, it's tough going. I even tuned into 2fm for the first time in years on Monday night.

I cant see anything in that link about them returning to newstalk other than a rumour stated as a rumour. Is there any reason at all to believe it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,940 ✭✭✭ballsymchugh

as far as i know, murph, hicks and horgan are producers, not journalists. they just had an interest in different sports and were drafted in when needed.
ken is, as far as i know, a journalist, and has written for the examiner in the past.

He still does. He has a weekly column.
