Btw, for anyone coming from an iPhone, I did some investigation and this was the easiest way I found to get your contacts across. It uses the Bump app (free for both iphone and android) to transfer the contacts wirelessly and without having to sync to Google via iTunes. It can also be used to directly transfer audio, video and pics (drm allowing I assume).

I used this handy little guide here...

    Sooo...

First off, I'm only 3 days in, so my opinion will probably change over time. Let me give you the pros first :-

    1. Glorious screen - you really are getting a whole pile more real estate, its like night and day for browsing, facebook, videos etc.

    2. Speed - it FLIES compared to iPhone 4 (and interestingly my Nexus 7). Just nothing seems to faze it, I haven't seen a stutter or pause yet.

    3. Syncing - once I turned it on and logged in, everything from my other android devices were just there, no need for a desktop app.

And of course, the price! For €345 delivered there is really nothing to touch it from a value point of view.

There are a few cons though :-

    1. This is a biggie for me - its borderline too big! I am 6' tall, with presumably proportional hands and I find it difficult to touch the top of the screen with my thumb when trying to operate the phone with one hand. So this means with Chrome I can only barely touch the omnibox and menu that accesses bookmarks. This is a significant downgrade from the iPhone browsing experience where the bookmarks button is in the bottom right, so you can fly through your standard sites quite easily. I've tried Dolphin and Firefox but they too don't offer easy access to bookmarks or history.

The same applies to typing, I can just about hit the letter a, I can't reach q at all. I have hit s a fair few times already instead of a.

    2. Build quality. This isn't huge, but I have noticed that when I go back to the 4 for something, it feels like a much higher quality device because of the metal and glass. The LG feels (and is!) plastic. This doesn't bother me really, its just an observation. I also haven't found it to be a head turner, no one has asked me about it or noticed I have a new phone. Again, not a major thing but it is in comtrast with something like the G III.

    3. Apps - As you can imagine you may have problems getting android versions of some apps. I had a couple where the android version was behind the iphone version or abandoned completely. This situation isn't as bad as it used to be and is improving month by month.

Overall thought, is it a better phone than the iPhone 4? Ah yes, of course :) Is it the phone for you? Depends on whether you are ready for the leap to Android and how used you are to one handed operation. Get into a store and play around with another 4.7" screen.

Well in all honesty the iPhone 4 is still the gold standard in terms of industrial design. The Nexus 4 comes closer to it than any other phone has, though in an ideal world it'd have a metal support structure on its edge. They obviously took quite a few prompts from the design of the iPhone 4 and that's no bad thing.

I saw some reviews that said the S3 was more stylish and I did a double take - the Nexus is the best looking current generation Android phone by some margin.

The 'navigate with your thumb' thing seems to be a big thing for some people, as above. I almost never use just my thumb, whether it is in reach or not. I almost always use the screen with both hands anyhow, so if a phone is too big or not will be judged by size in pocket rather than use with 1 hand. Obviously each to their own, but I find it hard to have accuracy for anything except plain scrolling with my thumb.

Bugger! You're not wrong there, absolutely farcical.
Odd that its taking so long for a response....when I mailed them previously, got a reply in less than 5 mins??
Seems weird in this day and age we have to go through so many hoops for someone to take our money off of us!
    Keep us posted.

I did the same thing and got the same result as you. I have been waiting since the 8th with my status:
    Feb 8
You placed an order with Google Commerce Ltd on Feb 8. Google Wallet sent a copy of this receipt to

BUT... I don't know if it's a coincidence but I just checked my Google Wallet and I see my status has changed from order placed to order received:

    Feb 14
Google Commerce Ltd received your order.
    Some bit of progress anyhow.:pac:

It's going through correctly, be patient for your shipping confirmation and do not cancel.

Speaking of which, mine was collected at 11.35PM tonight (ordered the 8th, shipped the 12th) :D

    So out of curiosity.
What is the average total price (16 GB model) working out at between postage, parcel motel costs and currecy exchange etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,182 ✭✭✭Genghiz Cohen

I paid about €330 all in.
Parcel motel was free but €3.50 otherwise.

    Thanks,
I've been seeing them on ebay working out at about 350 - 400. So it still seems worth the hassle of ordering from Google.

No point in emailing the Google support team with any query.
Just look at the large UK buyers thread on XDA and you'll see that the
support team are based in the USA and are pretty ignorant of how things operate in UK/EMEA. Best you can expect is a copy/paste scripted response.

Is this available to Irish users?

After ordering at 3:03pm on January 30th, with a billing address changed to Parcel Motel, the wallet account was apparently put on hold; though I wasn't told until this Monday when I tried buying an app from the store.

After 2 days on hold, I removed and re-added the card on Wednesday with my normal address (expecting all orders to be cancelled). Today, some action appeared, in that Google had received my order, and there was a delivery date in Google Play! A delivery date of February 13th was... eh... unlikely to actually happen without violating causality rules, but whatever. Progress! And then I got notification that the card couldn't be charged. Sigh. I tried to update the delivery details to the card (with Irish address), failed. Removed the card again, added with my Dublin address, but PM postcode. Guess what? My wallet account is on hold again

Feb 15 You successfully updated your payment for this order to VISA xxx-1234.
Feb 15 An attempt to charge £0.00 to VISA xxx-1234 failed. You must update your payment information within 7 days or your order will be cancelled.
Feb 15 Google Commerce Ltd received your order.
Jan 30 You placed an order with Google Commerce Ltd on Jan 30. Google Wallet sent a copy of this receipt to a@b.c

I sent them two more emails (no replies) and decided to reorder. Just got the receipt for the new order, so we'll see if they can get their shit together this time. Wankers.
