I just can't see how someone would have sent a mare to Duke of Marmalade,, never would appeal as a stallion to me.

A top class son of Danehill who has a brilliant American pedigree through his damline: Family of sires Lemon Drop Kid,champion A.P Indy, Statue of Liberty who briefly stood at Coolmore and Wolfhound. The amount of group 1 winners in his extended pedigree is extraordinary, perhaps his will improve with age, after all he was 4 before he won his first group 1

Vinnie Roe is a stallion who's progeny is just coming to maturity over jumps. I noticed Our Vinnie is running at Cheltenham this afternoon. They seem to be all 5 going on 6 this season. Anyone think he will ascend to near the top of the sires championship in the next few years?

Not a great race but one of his sons almost landed a Byrnes gamble at Gowran today. 16/1 in the morning into 4/1SP. Beat by a rag with a Betfair SP of over 200/1.

A few of the lads told me to back it on the basis of a huge step up in trip & Russell being booked to ride. I didn't FWIW

Thought it was strange Colonel that they gambled it in a maiden and not a handicap next time out

Was thinking the same although maybe it was double bluff

I remember a guy telling me Stuart Williams was lethal for that. 2nd or 3rd run in a maiden, you think they're just getting him handicapped & that's when he goes for it

He was stepping massively up in trip & Russell was booked

I don't trust Byrnes further than I'd throw him. Does anyone remember that bumper years ago where he had the first two home? Think the first one had been well backed, but the second one absolutely cruised all over it, jockey pretended to hit him and got him beat,Byrnes got away with it because he told the stewards that wasn't how he told him to ride it

Yes of course he has a great page but to stand for 40,000 euro in his first year was crazy. He beat a poor New Approach in Newmarket(times suggest new approach was below par). Also Finsceal beo as a four year old when she had lost her spark. I feel him been so late to come to hand, suggests his prodigy would be similar and in general that's a bit late.

It's not really about what he beat though. He had the looks and the pedigree, but as you say a 4 year old is very late. 40,000 was plenty to pay, but Coolmore like any good stud farm will make sure they make their money on a stallion before the prodigy race in case he proves disappointing. Footstepsinthesand springs to mind, Dylan Thomas at 35.

I know he's a very good stallion, but the best business move Coolmore have made in many a year is getting mares sent to Giant's Causeway at 100,000 punts his first year at stud.

Does anyone know what that would equate to in today's money?

Wow that's an amazing fee , maybe it was the whole craze around Storm Cat and the fact he was a superb racehorse on turf and dirt. He went up from USD75,000 to USD200,000 in 2004 then USD300,000 the following year 2005.

Was looking at the Derby yearling entries. Lots of Sea the Stars, Godolphin have plenty of them

I'm still scratching my head over Dubawi at 75k. Looking at the entries it only looks like Godolhpin using him and these foals would have been at the cheaper rate.

Sea the Stars-Look Here caught the eye so too did Sea The Stars-Vodka. Not a bad number of Danehill Dancers but not one of them being Coolmore owned. Galileo and Montjeu obviously very popular, literally one or two Mastercraftsman. Don't even remember seeing a Dylan Thomas or Duke of Marmalade. Can't see them hanging around Coolmore for much longer. Fastnet Rock-My Emma another who caught the eye

Lots of Dylan Thomas's running over 6 and 7f in singapore / HK. Mr Armstrong won 2nyt and is outta Dylan Thomas.

Choisir back in Ireland at 10k looks a good move, fifth group one winner for him last night in Down Under and with the success of Olympic Glory last year will get some nice mares.

Another stakes winner for Holy Roman. doing very well

Do they have anything in the older horse division other than Camelot over that distance? Most Improved is a 10f horse, isn't he?

Won the St James over a mile, been a bit inconsistent, would have ran well in the french derby if he hadn't been so badly blocked like half the field

Frankel begins his stallion career this Friday (14th of Feb!) at Banstead Manor Stud. 135 mares booked this season @ £125k each.

    Read this on Betfair:
We're all probably familiar with the foal share agreement between Juddmonte and Coolmore, but I didn't realise that Kind was one of ten mares originally due to visit Sadler's Wells. When he became ill, Juddmonte agreed to switch those ten mares to the best two stallions available, which at that time were Montjeu and Galileo. Phillip Mitchell is quoted as saying "If I'm honest, she would probably never have visited Galileo unless she was part of that package". When it comes to deciding who chooses the resultant foals of those mares, both Coolmore and Juddmonte independently grade the ten foals and on an alternate picks basis, select their five. That year, it was Juddmonte's turn to have first pick and chose the Galileo - Kind colt whom they had listed as their number one choice.

The rest, as they say, is history but we should be thankful that we didn't end up with another Bullet Train.........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭Overthelast

There is a bit more to the agreement. Read it at the weekend (cannot remember which paper but its from the same article).

If Juddmonte or Coolmore land a "lucky" one ie one of the foals turns out to be a superstar, then the other Operation shouldn't get punished just because they didn't have first pick that year. So they get 10 free nominations with that Stallion. A consolation I suppose.

Edit - Found it, article by David Walsh, Sunday Times Sports Section 10.02.13.

    Read this on Betfair:
Coolmore have plenty of Bullet Trains indeed for their massive Investments over the last few years they have more Bullet Trains than Frankels.Indeed they [Coolmore ]seem to have had a lot of horses that want a trip ie 1 1/2m and more which tend to end up as NH stallions.People are backing Kingsbarns to win the Guineas where in my opinion he has no chance unless its heavy. He has the most exaggerated knee action I have ever seen and will need a trip to be at his best on soft or worse.Another horse for the three mile chase stallion arena.

Mother of god that is some book of mares. Its jaw dropping to be honest. How many of those mares have Coolmore lost, trouble on the way me thinks.

Think Sea the Stars got just as nice ones. Interesting to see Vodka go to Frankel as well as Sea the Stars. Those foals would sell for a small fortune I'd say

Went over the list and there is not one average mare in it.Just to try and pick one I will opt for Danedream[unproven]and Midsummer[proven].

Coolmore sending them 15 of their own.

Just who are Coolmore going to use for all those daughters of Galileo they have? They can't outsource them all, Fastnet Rock to get some very nice mares maybe??

Very solid, consistently in the top 20 broodmare sires in the UK and Ireland. Not many top class horses but they are tough and tend to be genuine

Program last night on BBC radio "Frankel at stud".Firstly I think the hype has become a little Beckhamesk. His book of mares is 135 with inital 220 requests at 125k a pop.His first official marel[after test mare] is Midday at 12 noon today[she currently has a Galileo foal].He is boxed beside Oasis dream and Dansili and Philip Mitchell was asked if he is a hit what price could he go to and his reply was "Dansili started at 8k and is now 80k".There are no plans to go to Australia but we are currently in talks about Australian mares comming here when their time is right.Head auctioneer at tattersalls Newmarket was asked if the unlikely event of a first crop Frankel yearling was put up for sale what would he fetch"very minimum starting bid of 300k and then sit back at watch".

I wonder would I get a price on Frankel being a flop at stud?
