I'm not convinced by a lot of American ones. The top fee stallions are both Darley in Street Cry and Bernardini. Bernardini is only in about his third set of 2 year olds I believe but is yet to have a gr.1 winner this year while Street Cry has had one. Dynaformer was a really good one I didn't realise he wasn't even a gr.1 winner himself, I know next to nothing about American grade 1's apart from the big ones in the last couple of years.

Giant's Causeway was standing at 300k and he hasn't even produced an american classic winner to date. I'm a huge fan of War Front, and Awesome Again is very good value at 50k compared to some of the others I think.

Interesting how Cape Blanco's will do over there, first son of Galileo. Think it's about time they had one

Sorry I forgot to answer, I suppose the superstars would be considered the three named above. Don't think any come close to Storm Cat. Think Scat Daddy is going to be a really good sire too. Got off to a good start with Daddy Long Legs and he has probably the best 3 year old filly in training over here in Lady of Shamrock, won the American Oaks last month, both in his first crop. Was only 10k last year, 17.5 this year, he's leading first crop sire, can see him only getting better.

Edit: They're also selling seriously well. 2 year old colt went for 575k in May, another filly this year went for 250, very good for quite a low fee. I think the stallions over here are seriously over priced

The purses are much bigger over there though aren't they? Maybe not proportionally but makes up for some of the distortion

Prize money is very good, some claimers go up to about 40 thousand dollars, maidens can be the same. Though I still think they're overpriced considering the current fees are after huge reductions in recent years. For example Giant's Causeway was 300k at one stage, Kingmambo was the same. Giant's Causeway stood for 100k in Irish punts his first year when he stood in Tipp, that must be the greatest rip off for an unproven stallion ever

How do people think Sea the Stars will do as a stallion?

The list mares that were sent to him were pretty impressive so there will be no excuses if he doesn't produce.

Does Cape Cross have any other sons as stallions?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

No excuses at all. Think he should do well, Cape cross doesn't have any but Invincible Spirit is by Green Desert and I do think Lawman has started off well so hopefully he can be a sire of sires.

Lady of Shamrock won another grade 1 for Scat Daddy, she is very good filly

Steeler makes Raven's Pass stamp on breeding prospects. Can't make any incisive insights on this my self but would like to hear you opinions on it.

Surprised Steeler is such a good two year old, his dam won the Park Hill stakes at 3 so he should be even better next season, but Darshaan is an excellent broodmare sire too.

Raven's Pass wouldn't have had any excuses if he failed, he got some very nice mares. Was a vintage year though between him,New Approach and Henrythenavigator

Any idea who the buyers of the STS yearlings are? Also what sort of prices have the Tsui's been willing to pay?

    http://www.tattersalls.com/october2-search-lots.php

Search 'Sea The Stars'. Will tell you the purchaser.

The Raven's Pass colt by Nightime is an absolute lovely looker. Coolmore were outbid on that one.

Armani I remember seeing the Tsui's bought a few Sea the Stars when he had his first foals. Can remember up on 3/4's of a million, they were supporting him well

They were outbid on that full sister to Was too I think. She is gone to France.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

1.5 million is plenty enough. Was sold for 1.2 and at the time she was the most expensive Galileo ever.

Galileo's are selling ridiculously well, the 925k is a full sister to Roderic O'Connor, while the 1.3 million is a full sister to Together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,246 ✭✭✭Mgoraf

    5 Galileo's, 3 Montjeu, 1 Raven's Pass and 1 Sea The Stars in the top 10. 7 different buyers

Galileo's 23 lots have gone for a combined 10.6mil! (9 more to be sold)

An Alexander Goldrun offspring hasn't made it to the track yet from what I can find. Will this be the first? Anyone know who she was mated to in the past? Funny seeing one of hers ans Ouija Boards offspring in such close proximity, well the photos at least.

    didn't realise she raced as a 5yo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

What are you buying when you fork out 1.2 or 1.5 million euro/pounds? Is there some kind of buffer in knowing that you can always sell a filly off as a breeding prospect?

    That's my understanding

Any purchase is a risk if you pay $10 or $10m (google Snaafi Dancer) but at least if a filly is useless she has residual value as a broodmare

They bid on that one anyway

Just a quick review from day 1 on some of the highlights:

Lot 172 - the ring filled up to see this colt, a son of Galileo and Lord Derby's champion Ouija Board, sell from Stanley House Stud. After an opening bid of 100,000gns, Tony Nerses and Lord Huntingdon cut out much of the early running before John Magnier came in at 475,000gns. Two bids later, Magnier secured the colt for 525,000gns.

The chestnut, led up by Marco Palazzo, is the first yearling out of his dam to be offered at auction. He was the recipient of a handy update last month when his half-brother Voodoo Prince ran third in the Listed Foundation Stakes at Goodwood.

"I'm absolutely delighted," said Lord Derby following the sale. "I don't want to sound biased but I thought he looked fantastic and had a great walk on him.

"Voodoo Prince gaining black-type last week was a big help. I wish Mr Magnier the best of luck with him."

Lot 161 - John Ferguson and John Magnier clash on a son of Raven's Pass and the Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Nightime. Following a protracted bidding duel, Ferguson has the final say at 800,000gns.

The blaze-faced chestnut was described yesterday as "a lovely, quality, scopey horse with a wonderful attitude" by Bill Dwan of the Castlebridge Consignment, who sold him on behalf of his breeder Marguerite Weld. The partnership enjoyed a similarly noteworthy result on this day last year when selling a Galileo sister to Nightime for 700,000gns to the Niarchos family.

"Raven's Pass is doing extremely well at the moment highlighted by the likes of Steeler but there are still more in the pipeline," said Ferguson.

"Over the years, Mrs Weld has consistently bred top horses and she should be congratulated on that.

"We've known this horse from an early age and he just an oustanding individual. He's by an exciting young sire out of a Group 1-winning mare - it was just a great combination and made sense."

Lot 154 - Hugo Lascelles is the winning bidder at 550,000gns on a Dansili filly out of Neartica, a winning Sadler's Wells half-sister to Goldikova and Galikova.

The filly is the fourth yearling from as many through the ring from Newsells Park Stud today to hit six figures. The stud paid 330,000gns for Neartica through Blandford Bloodstock at the 2007 Tattersalls December Sale.

Lot 144 - Californian owner Jon Kelly strikes again, this time when fighting off Stephen Hillen at 500,000gns for Rathbarry Stud's Sea The Stars half-brother to Classic winners Finsceal Beo and Frozen Power.

The colt is the second yearling out of the Listed-placed Musical Treat, by Royal Academy, to hit 500,000gns following Frozen Power, who sold to John Ferguson at this sale in 2008.

Auctioneer John O'Kelly initially asked for 400,000gns for the colt but had to drop to 50,000gns to open proceedings. Kelly came in at 100,000gns and saw off Hillen with a successful of quickfire, vocal bids, on some occasions by telling O'Kelly to increase the bidding by 50,000gns or more.

"He was a gorgeous animal," said Kelly, who will send the colt to Luca Cumani. "He was one of the best colts I've seen and I've just been reminded by my vet that the last colt he really wanted me to buy was Camelot!"

Lot 140 - With one bid of 475,000gns, Charlie Gordon-Watson sees off John Clarke, standing with John Oxx, for a Sea The Stars half-brother to French 1,000 Guineas heroine Elusive Wave.

"I thought he was the best Sea The Stars in the sale," said Gordon-Watson. "He's for Bjorn Nielsen and will go to David Lanigan."

Pier House Stud sold the colt, who is also related to this season's smart juvenile City Image and out of the placed Multicolour Wave.

Lot 132 - after several near misses, Californian owner Jon Kelly makes his first strike, going to 275,000gns for a Galileo colt from Oaks Farm Stables through Jamie McCalmont.

Kelly, who was bidding while standing alongside Luca Cumani, owned the Grade 1-winning mare Vacare.

His new purchase is out of Listed winner Moments Of Joy, a daughter of the Yorkshire Oaks heroine My Emma who has produced two stakes runners - Unity and Eternal Bounty (by Galileo) - from as many runners.

"They finally let me have one!" said Kelly. "Japan have Deep Impact but I think Galileo is the outstanding stallion of the world - America better catch up!

"This horse will go to Luca Cumani, who already trains a Dalakhani two-year-old for me. If he's good enough - becomes a Cape Blanco - he could come back to the US."

This isn't Kelly's first trip to Tattersalls - in 2011, he sold a Dixie Union yearling at this sale while at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale, he paid 145,000gns for a sister to Derby runner-up At First Sight, also by Galileo.

Lot 131 - the latest yearling out of Model Queen, the dam of Regal Parade among others, sells for 170,000gns to Gerard Butler. By Sea The Stars, he brings his sire's sale average to 205,000gns, which places him in seventh behind Teofilo (with one sold) on the sale's leading sires' list.

His sale also means that Model Queen has produced 2.92 million guineas worth of stock at this sale since 2003. However, he is the cheapest yearling to sell out of the daughter of Kingmambo within that time as well.

Lot 124 - John Ferguson makes his tenth purchase of the day, a 320,000gns son of Dubawi from Highbank Stud.

Of the eight Dubawi yearlings sold so far today, three have been snapped up by Ferguson.

Ferguson has also purchased three Shamardals, two Pivotals and an Invincible Spirit and Cape Cross. His total expenditure so far is 2.22 million guineas.

Lot 124 is a half-brother to two winners, Marching On and Lady Of The house, and out of a Malibu Moon half-sister to Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Sander Camillo - whom Ferguson purchased for 3.2 million guineas in this ring in November 2007.

Is there any way to track these yearlings up until they're entered in a race or named for racing? Rather than check every 2yo maiden going to see if they're entered - or possibly racing abroad.

irishracing.com and use the horse tracker, it e mails you when the horses are entered.

It'd be just UK and Ireland though

Ah sorry. Not that I know of. Keep an eye out on the Betfair forum at the start of the flat season, there is usually a thread with a lot of 2 year olds' names and breedings

Can't imagine there will be many superstars from them. Early season 2 year olds I'd say. Alfred Nobel should be nice too
