I used radiator, helmet (where your chin/mouth is) and nosecone facing driver. The last one isn't something you would do for a race if course! Radiator is good, until the water temp gets high enough to heat the adhesive enough to start coming off. Under normal circumstances not a problem, but if you starte getting hot you will run into trouble. I had my gopro come off a kart at rock island last year for that very reason. Came off going over a bump at about 55. went nearly 15feet in the crashed down on the ground, casing opened up and the whole thing traveled down the track.

    Fecker still works :)

For starting out, I would go with the helmet by the chin setup. Reason being you get a great drivers' eye view as well as being about to read your mychron on the video and observer your steering inputs. Its a good training\improvement tool.

Here's a view from the helmet cam...

Thanks for that man. I`ve seen some fantastic videos filmed from the radiator alright, so much so that I have ordered the stand that lets you clamp it onto the lid of the radiator. I`m afraid that the adhesive stand would come off. Here`s the video here that persuaded me.

Be careful with clamps, I've tried attaching a go pro to things that rattle allot and clamps can slip a lot.

I would have thought the sticky pads would be better as there's less flex in them too. That was another problem, the further away from the clamping point the camera is the more shake you'll see in the video. If your just worried about the glue strength fading with the heat from the radiator it is also possible to get heat resistant sticky pads. You could replace the glue pad with the heat resistant one.

Another way of mounting (but pricey) would be to get a manfrotto super clamp along with a ball and socket camera tripod head and the gopro tripod mount. You need a good ball and socket head to stop it slipping though.

The pads are fine unless you get elevated rad temps. Under normal circumstances they should be fine, but as soon as our water temp got up to 180-190ish (say 85C) things got slippery! Your temp shouldn't be getting that high under normal circumstances. You could just stick it on with the pad and fasten it with a couple of pieces of safety wire too.

I always do that anyway. I got the motorsport edition and I always tie it off out of paranoia.

I got the clamp today, but the original plan was to use a pad which would be secured with heavy duty tape. I don`t mind how it`s fastened down as long as it is secure and it doesn`t fall off!

Rd. 1 of the MI Championship in Cork is fast approaching, so would anybody be able to tell me what front/rear sprocket combination would be required? Seems like quite an open track.

Would anybody be able to help me with regards to the Mojo tyres barcoding for the Rotax Max class. I know that if you want to race in MSA Karting in England that you must use yellow barcoded tyres, but you don`t in Ireland. Is there any performance difference between the yellow and green barcoded tyres? Because if not, the green ones are substantially cheaper!

as far as I know the yellow barcoded tyre is quicker than the green. if you are only starting out and don't think you will be running up the front use what you can afford. But to the best of my knowledge the green are slower. i don't know exactly by how much.
also where did you finish in the T-Plate I ended up 9th. Intrepid Chassis No.20 hopefully I'll be back on track when exams are over.

Hi guys, I've a Pro Kart and been doing a bit of racing with it since getting it about a year ago. Midland Karting ran their own Championships for Pro Karts and 125's. Just wondering is there any other track that run their own competitions where I could compete against other Pro Karts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

I think they still run prokarts up north at nutts and so on not down south. No idea what happened to the class, talk about cheap racing. Slow yeah, but totally hassle free!

More and more people have been talking about them lately, might be time to a bit of a FaceBook initiatve to get something organized going. Tullyallen im sure would accommodate something. Look for the super4 ireland group on facebook. They are all ex-prokarters and can tell you more about where you can race yours.

Cheers SouperComputer, will try a few of the karting tracks to see if it would be possible to get something going! Anyone else here with a prokart that might be interested in doing some racing?!

im racing kz2 for a couple of months now and there is nothing like it, i started in superpro, learned lines and then went gearbox, karting is the best value for money motorsport out there. drifting and rallying have nothing on it and ive tried them.

How much does a persons weight effect a karts performance? I'm 14 stone and was wondering would there be any point in competing. I'd imagine if a lad was 10 stone it would make a serious difference to the performance of the kart?

Up to about 3kg over class weight won't make any difference. After that, weight does start to make a difference alright.
Depending on what you want to drive (Rotax Max, KZ2-gearbox etc) the class weight will vary slightly.
Rotax max is currently 165Kg here. That's kart & driver in his safety gear. A typical rotax kart will weigh around 80kg on its own, leaving 85kg for the driver in his gear.
Some clubs also run a "Masters" category at around 177 or 180kg for the slightly heavier drivers.
At 14 stone (89kg) you should be able to join either group in this category and be pretty even with the other drivers.
