Grr. I think I need to get a new Graphics Card. FML.

Anyone have recommendations on these things? I'm shoite at hardware. Think I need an NVidia one. That's about all I know.

To people who know loads about computers, I probably sound like I'm asking for directions to a specific petrol station, but all I know is that it has petrol pumps at it.

Is It a laptop or desktop you have?IF IT'S a laptop then you'd probably be better off just buying a new laptop,If it's a desktop, well then there much easier to work with :) you could just need to update your graphics cards drivers too or something you may not need a new card

Do you know if the graphics are built into your mother board or seperate?

Throw up the model on here or in Computers and you'll get plenty of advice.

Slight moan: Being stuck at home on rest is a pain in the ass. Having shops a mile away is worse. Slight nice post: My OH god love him is close to sainthood. He takes me out each day to wherever I want to go after he finishes work just so I won't go mad, and he's just been great.

Stupid question: This might sound really scabby, but like me, the OH is someone who pretty much has everything he wants. As a thank you for putting up with me while sick I'm going to replace his lost bits and pieces on his netbook as a surprise, and fix the spare.

For Christmas I'm going to get his car through the NCT, have it serviced, sort out its myriad faults, and get him six months tax. And I'm getting it properly detailed to get rid of the few small scratches it has.

Does that sound a bit scabby? Given that every time I need to leave the house for the current time and up to another four months, I need him on tap, he has to drive me to doctors etc. I think it's a nice thank you (even if it's an xmas gift), means he gets to love his car again, etc.

Of course I will buy him a christmas gift as well, but this would be his big gift.

And for those who might think it's an expensive gift, without him at the moment I'd be in and out of taxis like there was no tomorrow, and he has been incredibly good to me while I've been ill.

I know having a nice car in good nick, well serviced, that is ncted, and has a few months tax would ease his mind so while it's very unglamorous, I think it's a nice gift?

    Am I mad?

Nope, not mad, not nearly scabby. Indeed I need new tyres and brakediscs so if you're feeing generous... :DGreat pressie(s) S IMHO.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Feck off with yourself and your Honda, those jap parts are horrendous dear I've heard. :D

I think I thought it was scabby as it's a bit practical and long term, no real wow factor at Christmas, then when I thought about it, neither of us are into Christmas!

That's a great present Stheno. It'll be clear to him that you listened to him or noticed the little things and that you didn't just browse around a few shelves in a shop until you spotted something. You've clearly put some thought into it!

Stheno that's really nice of you, you know what he'll appreciate most!

I'm picking up stuff he's mentioned over the last few months. He better be paying attention to me!

Told Daddy that if he's talking to Santa to tell him that I'm trying on Hunter Wellies during the week in Schuh and if I like them I'll let my Daddy know. Great man for passing on messages is my Da.

Stheno that's a fantastic gift! Id be beaming with that gift!! Those are the things I resent paying for every month.

Re the graphics card - I have a laptop, its a Samsung RV511 with an i3 processor and 4GB RAM, its a good laptop and just a year old so I dont want to get a new one. Its got the built in memory card, an Intel HD iCore series card. I updated the drivers today.

I have another expansion pack for the sims installed and it keeps crashing since I installed it. I have done every step of troubleshooting I can come across, and the only thing left is the graohics card. On the sims forums it says that my card isnt the best one to be using, nvidia is the way to go apparently.

I do however have an older non functioning laptop with an Nvidia card (when I say older, I mean its about 4 years old max).

Ah I did to be honest, we're the sort of people where either we buy something we like, or the other buys someone what they like, we make a decent living and we are not extravagant, so when it comes to gifts we are a bit stuck.

For my birthday this year (I still laugh at this) in desperation he took me through our local shopping centre without clearly telling me he'd no idea what to buy me, and when I finally copped it, I steered him straight to my favourite perfume and was delighted :0
mad ? no,I'd be thrilled with that gift tbh

I told him I had it in mind tonight, and he was delighted, he's having a tough time at the minute and it means he has to do feck all, one less worry for him, he was really thrilled, I thought it was a bit scabby as he'll just get a small gift for Christmas, see next response.

    For Christmas, I'm getting a
    Skagen watch
as a thank you for how good he has been to me while I've been sick/incapacitated, plus small things, I might sound like I'm spending a fortune, but we've never been an extravagant couple, and we've never really relied on each other, but at the moment I'd be really stuck without him, so making his life easier, and maybe marking how well we've come through a very rough patch as a couple is what this Christmas is about.

Either way I'm glad to do it.

Been watching brain-surgery videos on youtube and finished my little (okay, not so little) scene.

This is what I was writing about. It's not a gory video but it's really cool. It's a technology to control parkinsons tremors etc.

He sounds like an amazing OH :)

I got one of his little presents, one of those little planes you paint and put together. He's always saying he's gonna get one and never does! I love little presents like that.

How easy is it to upgrade the graphics though? are they not built into the motherboard?

Thanks for the feedback guys, Oh seems thrilled with his early gift, as it takes a bit of a load off his mind.

Know nothing about his surprise gift so I'll keep you in suspense as to the actual watch too :)

For a pair of adults we are very sad, we do regular gifts, then "Santy" gifts :D Normally rubbish, but this year, very nice for him as a thank you!

OK so I checked it and its the Dedicated Video RAM that is the problem - I need 128MB, I have 64MB, so exactly half.

Emm, I don't know.. the laptop turns on but shuts down straight away again (and yes, even when it's charged and plugged in :P) and I was told it would be 250 to fix it, so I just bought a new one!

Ah the video ram is your problem then,It wouldn't be easy I'd say, there's no guarantee it would be compatible with the laptop anyway,Dedicated graphics cards are no good for gaming I'm afraid :(

Afaik you can't share memory with video.

New card, which is a horror in a laptop or new laptop

    How old is your laptop?

It's possible with some laptops alright. Especially if it's onboard graphics. It all depends on the way the manufacturer has it setup.

Ah_Yeah: If you get through to the manufacturer they might be able to help you do it. Try sending them an e-mail if you can't find any help on boards or other forums.

In other PC news, I now have a HTPC setup in my kitchen. I'm currently scanning the satellite for the list of channels and seeing about setting up an N64 Emulator. After that it'll be sharing my music collection and seeing if I can share the satellite tv down to my room (although I dunno if my crappy ethernet through the power cables is fast enough.) Should be good for the dinner party at the weekend though. I've already checked and the Kitten Cam Stream works. :D

Is that the implanting electrodes while the patient is conscious? It's absolutely fascinating and how as the electrodes pass into position, going through the regions of the brain and how everything appears different according to the corresponding region - like everything turns a particular colour etc and the surgeon mapping where they are in the brain by the patient's response.
