Disney says "Star Wars" episode seven will come out in 2015.

    Just breaking atm.

    EDIT:
Disney says the Lucasfilm deal would be "dilutive" (cut) its per-share profit in 2013, 2014, and "accretive" (add) to profit in 2015.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/30/disney-lucas-idUSL3E8LU5AC20121030
Oct 30 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co said it agreed to buy film maker George Lucas's Lucasfilm Ltd for $4.05 billion.

Disney will pay about half in cash and issue about 40 million shares at closing for the acquisition of the film studio known for the iconic "Star Wars" movies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,208 ✭✭✭✭aidan_walsh

    From Disney themselves:
Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction.

    ...

Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

Oh well, at least we'll probably get the original trilogy on Blu-ray. Eventually. But the people who complained about Lucas raping their childhood had better prepare themselves - because they ain't seen nothin' yet!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Jelly 292

Well, I never thought Lucas would let it go but Im sure he needs the cash at the moment.

Since the 3 prequels I've put Lucas out of my mind but maybe this is a good thing then???

    Episode 7 2015...

Lucas seems to be ruling out directing, which is at least something: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=96524
It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.

I'll not be boarding the 'this is automatically gonna be bad' bandwagon. With control removed from Lucas, & handed to fresh minds etc...I'm optimistic about this trouncing the prequel trilogy

    Holy moley, huge news!!!

Admittedly still in shock here but lets put a little analysis on the Star Wars aspect. I for one despise Episodes 1-3, absolute cack of the highest order which I don't think I need to go into here as i imagine most are in agreement. Yes, George Lucas is at fault for these travesties but wasn't the problem with these films that he had complete control? An aspect that worked for IV-VI but didn't for the new outings?

Now I never got into the whole Star Wars Universe (comics, novels, Clone Wars, etc.) but there's no doubt that there's a wealth of possible side stories and aspects that can be explored. And if Lucas is only creative consultant, then perhaps new stories can be told? It all comes down to how Disney want to play it I guess. Attempt to capture a new generation with the story we all know so well or attempt to recapture the generation that originally grew up with the saga, a generation that admittedly is tired of the bastardisations over the years but still has a feeling in their water of some redemption.

I await expecting to be dissapointed but you never know...like the lotto :)

Star Wars episodes eight and nine will follow, Disney says in press release.
Long-term plan is feature film every two-three years.

Was mad seeing the headlines. Like the suggestions of Whedon taking the reins on Episode 7 or maybe a new Indy?

Was sure Lucas said previously no one would handle Star Wars after him.

Quick question: Does this involve other Lucas companies such as Arts, Skywalker Sound, ILM? And if not do they just own film and tv rights to Star wars or the games as well?

So presumably Disney will now own the rights to all movies owned by LucasFilm?

Odds on Nic Cage being the new Indiana Jones?

Based on the article below, Disney bought the lot.

Who cares? With Lucas only on as "creative consultant" then maybe the future Star Wars films will actually be good. At least this time they won't be bound to this retarded teleology of explaining why Darth Vader went evil, something that didn't even need expanding on in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,294 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

ILM and Pixar under one roof? Nice. Wonder if we'll get a Pixar Star Wars?

Oh or a Muppets Star Wars...

Did they mention if they had any plans for indy ??

Hopefully now the Star Wars story cape ogress along the lines Lucas originally envisaged, instead of this technological waffle and over exaggeration.

Stoked to see how it goes.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

Or Star Wars/Indy/Monkey Island characters in Once Upon a Time

I can't conceive how professional film makers of any repute could do worse.

I hope Lucas lives long enough to see some decent new movies made by someone else and then he can finally realise that *yes* he did personally fúck up the series with the prequels.

Reading a lot of shock and annoyance around the internets, I think people need to take stock of what the Star Wars franchise is before getting upset about this announcement: remove the money from the equation and the franchise is a dead duck & a cultural irrelevance - presided over by a hack whose lucky streak ensured he could run his beloved franchise into the (creative) ground, and demonstrating to the world what Ed Wood levels of writing and directing he'd sank to. Personally I'm glad that the keys are being taken away from him, and by the company who owns Pixar & Marvel (throw in Miramax as well for good measure); what's not to like? This is a good thing methinks.

It's good news for Star Wars fans - with Lucas clearly parked to one side ('Creative Consultant' means he'll get to share conference calls on the scripts, maybe the odd visit to the set), there's a slim yet realistic chance Star Wars might actually become a reasonable franchise once again. Anyone pining for series of films with Empire Strikes Back levels of darkness will be bound to be disappointed, but there's now a ... New Hope (ohoho!) we'll once again see some fun, thrilling space opera on the silver screen again.

I can only imagine the number of scriptwriters, directors & cinematographers who would be lining up to work on Episode 7, especially now that Lucas is effectively gone. Brad Bird's bound to be the initial front-runner to take over directing - the man's practically custom made for the job.

So there'll be a bit more merchandise with Mickey in a Jedi costume - so what? Would it really be any more offensive than all the Jar Jar merchandise knocking about the place since 1999? I don't give a fig about the merch, so I just ignore it. Sure John Carter was a bit of a trainwreck, but I think Disney are the right people to be in charge of this franchise.

    It really, really isn't.

Mixed feelings. Don't want to see the original films milked anymore but if it's going to be done then I'm happy it won't be by Lucas. But not every 2 years like a video game cash cow.

Genuinely intrigued to see who they hand it over to, such a big decision. Let's face it they may have dark moments but they are going to be aimed at kids and before the Cars movies I always thought Lasseter would be a great choice, perhaps they will go with a Pixar alumni like Brad bird?

I doubt they'll be using Pixar alumni. I think the closest thing Disney have to Star Wars is the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Any new movies made will be aiming for that audience and made to that standard (for good for for bad).

I dont really see the problem with this, Disney and Star Wars have always had certain ties, look at the amount of cross merchandising and the theme park rides, Pixar was originally a Lucas company. This could be the best thing to happen the Star Wars franchise since the prequels were ever greenlit, taking complete control away from Lucas could be just the thing to revitalise the franchise and make some decent movies. "they'll make it for kids"? that happened with Episode 1 and look how that turned out, the Star Wars films ARE for kids, its just those kids are now middle aged fanboys :pac:

Look at the directors that have worked with Disney properties lately who might concievably get a crack at helming a SW movie, for the whingers I give you four words: Joss Whedon's Star Wars.

Good comparison with Pirates. And Verbinski's only notable film before taking the reigns of Pirates was Mousehunt, not a million miles from Bird's Ratatouille :p

I guess it all depends on how it is handled, as long as it's better then Anakin's laughable decent into darkness.

So Cartman was right when he called Lucas a GEW. Jebus tap dancing Christ how many ranches does this guy need. $4,000,000,000, has he retained any creative control I wonder.

Notable to you maybe. Both The Mexican and especially The Ring remake also made big box office. Whilst I don't rate any of the three it's hardly like MH was the only thing he had done prior to POTC.

Anyway, what I meant was I'd be against giving a star wars movie to a pixar guy who had no track record outside of directing digital animation. Let someone else take the risk of giving a live feature to a Pixar guy (like Bird on MI4)
