Technological and cost reasons were a major determiner, for sure - you can't forget that AAA games cost increasingly ludicrous amounts of money, which partially explains the increase in risk adversity present on 360 and PS3 (just look at the lack of polish on something like Deadly Premonition to see the costs that have to be cut to get an adventurous title out there). Also its market presence was massive: by far the dominant gaming device of its time, until the DS came along anyway. Also that it had a huge Japanese core user base, which subsequent consoles - barring the DS and PSP - have failed to match.

Also it was the last point before the digital distribution market exploded. Several of the games that could have been highlights of PS2 are now on iOS, PC, XBLA or PSN. Disc based gaming has almost been reserved for the biggest, most expensive titles, whereas in the PS2 days disc releases were still the only really viable method of getting games out there. Luckily, a small handful of publishers - Rising Star stand out - have not abandoned disc base releases of smaller games, but they are a minority.

What made the PS2 so good was that it was so dominant with a massive user base bigger than any other console at the time with cheap development, manufacturing and licensing costs.

What this meant was that small B-tier developers could make very polished games on the PS2 and still make money from it even if the game wasn't popular. It meant that along with your blockbusters you still had the weird and often wonderful B-tier games that were usually far more interesting than the big mainstream franchises. It also helped that the DC/PS2 generation was the first generation where 3D game engines didn't feel like they were held together by the programmers sheer optimism alone. The problem with current generation is that the barrier to entry is now so high that there's really only room for the unadventurous big label games. B-tier developers have gone indie or handheld.

The PS2, SNES and Mega Drive.

They all had annual FIFA releases.
    I hate FIFA.

(Even in computer games I suck at football. Ever been last to be picked at football on a computer game? Ouch : / )

Well put. It's most definitely not, selective memory syndrome

What's your take on Desura, Android games development as a platform and Ouya?

Reckon it'll be any different to Pandora?

My two fave platforms. Both were groundbreaking for video games in different ways.

SNES is still my most played retro platform. So many classics, and such a focus on playability and game design.

Zelda a Link to the past FTW!!

I find that, regardless of current gen quality or lack thereof, I simply am not emotionally invested in the current gen. The is why it was so easy to say goodbye to the PS3, why the Vita holds no fascination at all, I never played them into the night, the games I did play were enjoyable but short, like Uncharted.
The Megadrive, Snes, PlayStation, Gameboy, N64, 3DO, Saturn, Xbox and PS2 were all played long into the night.
Played at a time when, before the arrival of children and major work pressure, I could lose myself in games and not worry about the intrusion of real life.
So, the 360 really represents the tail end of this journey, like music it maybe our tastes are crystallized at a certain point in our life and there we remain, loving the things others see as old hat and irrelevant.
Most gamers will never be convinced of the glories of System Shock 2, the brilliance of Super Ghouls and Ghosts, the relevance of Contra III.

Spot on, & prophetic words at that :)

It raises the point, will you buy the next generation when it arrives? If so, why? To keep your collection relevant? To enjoy the odd new gem that might appeal to you?

I find myself with the exact same views & facing the exact same question.

Me too. I am very much at the same point, where life is more or less in the way of games at the moment, for many of the same reasons. I probably will buy a next gen console, but maybe not all of them like I would have before, and certainly not any time soon after they release.

I'll probably pick the one that's built up the best back catalogue of games a year or 18 months after it comes out, when the version 1 bugs have been ironed out of the technology. At least then I'll have a decent handful of games available to get me through those 9 month lulls in good releases that seem to happen between January and September.

If this doesn't stop I'll be forced to introduce a certain Red Dwarf quote that can ruin a thread for several pages :D

@Mackdaddy, yeah I'll prob approach the next gen very similarly. I'll buy long after release & collect for it much later on

The moment Retr0 has been waiting for. Edge semi-apologise for (or at least re-evaluate) their Gunstar review, alongside several others.

Would ye happen to know what kind of power transformer I need to use a Japanese Super Famicom here?

My googling failed and thought ye might be a more direct source of knowledge.
    Thank ye either way.

    Well **** you Edge!
What we got right: Few would contest that Mario Kart - on Nintendo's home consoles at least - is now more party game than pure racer. It remains, by some distance, the worst game in the series, with no real sense of speed and, Baby Park aside, some lacklustre track designs.

My arse Double Dash is the worse but Wii kart and seven pale in comparison. Now I know how Retro feels in regards to Gunstar, not that Double Dash us an exceptional game but it is though.

@SteveSI is your membership still suspended? I forget... C'mon lads, sort it out! :)

Must be nice working at EDGE. When I'm wrong I'm plain wrong. But when Edge are wrong, its because their opinion is controversial.

That said the bemoaning of Doom not having enough in common with what, The Elder Scrolls or Deus Ex is prescient if absurdly phrased. Not that criticising Doom over that made much sense. It's like blaming Pong for not being Virtua Tennis.

It kind of does make a little sense though. You have to remember that at the time Ultima Underworld was released just before Doom and did have complex character interactions despite being a first person game which made it seem more advanced at the time. The reviewer was just crap and failed to recognise that Doom was trying to be Gauntlet in 3D and not a RPG in 3D and failed to realise the games big strenght, it was just loads of fun. Edge magazine, putting pretention before fun in gaming since 1993 :P
