Been playing Ghouls n Ghosts and Super Castlevania on and off the last week. I think I like the megadrive Castlevania more, am I allowed to think that?
Super Adventure Island is up next. Got the urge after watching the gamecenter cx episode of Adventure Isalnd.
50% through Circle of the Moon and just cannot be arsed to finish it. Walking around all over the place is annoying. The combination of cards is cool though and I especially like the flower sword.

after watching some CX episodes (thanks Sera!) I've been playing some Castlevania 3, its great fun but the controls really aren't great. Having seen Arino take on the later levels I'm sure that like other Castlevania games I will get utterly stuck long before I get bored :(.

Castlevania controls are fine other than climbing the stairs being frustrating in places. Your weapon and jump are limited on purpose, just get used to it. The game wouldn't be the same without the delay before the whip strike or being able to correct yourself mid jump.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,332 ✭✭✭valleyoftheunos

not being able to correct mid jump I can handle but the stairs are atrocious and the controls generally are sluggish. they aren't game breaking but they can make it a bit frustrating and I for one would be able to get into the game much easier if they were shaper.

That's just Castlevania. It's not Ninja Gaiden, it's amuch more precise game with very tight level design. It wouldn't work if you were faster. I beat Castlevania there recently and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the NES games, they're some of the best designed games ever, the level design is just perfect and compliments the controls.

I did find playing on an LCD screen did make the game much tougher. The LCD lag made it tough to time some attacks compared to a CRT, particularly the medusa heads who I've no trouble with on a CRT.

I see I'm not the only one who has got the urge to play a game from watching one of Sera links.
I think I'll watch Milon's Secret Castle next.

Cleared Contra 3 today on medium...onto hard it is. Epic game. Epic.

Played Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix today for the first time. Lovely artwork, the mechanics seem slightly off though. It's also way too easy. Kids today

I'm guessing that means it doesn't approach the original Super Turbo in terms of difficultly?

Yeah Turbo HD is sort of a weird one - a strange transition between old school Street Fighter and the modern versions. EnterNow put it best... feels 'off' for some hard to pin-down reason. Would definitely be more favourable towards if I played it before IV.

The Anniversary Collection coming out looks amazing though: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117405-Capcom-Celebrates-Street-Fighter-Anniversary-with-Collectors-Edition All the latest games on disc, DVDs, soundtracks and a glowing Ryu statue. Not to mention an awesome box.

Not even close. I remember playing & went on to own the actual SSF2T arcade board...it's a damn punishing game. The remix is like the childs vtec version.

You know Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn?

Wow the president's daughter is ugly. I kinda pity the villain having that hiding in his desk, know it could leap out at him any second. He's under enough stress already.

I was keen on the Anniversary boxset, 'til I saw that SF3: 3S and STHDR are just download codes. Mind, I'm the only one moaning about it, whatever that's worth. Everyone seems pretty enthused by it.

    >Playing against the CPU

I think I know the problem.
    And the solution.

(also ST arcade CPU is known to be a cheating bastard which reads your inputs & ignores charge times)

Finished Ys 1 on the PSP today. It's a step back after the complex mechanics of Seven and Oath in Felghana, but remains a playable, fun game and a curiosity to see how the mechanics evolved over time (no attack button ).

Mostly, it's a short, fast-paced action RPG with a few quirks - not least the fact that you hit the maximum level around two thirds through :p It has a few frustrating moments that I'm going to refer to as its 'point and click' moments, where there's a lot of running around talking to people hoping to trigger the next event or item discovery. Difficulty curve is a bit off-the-wall too, including a frankly ludicrous final boss that's largely down to luck as you're pelted with endless cannon balls and the floor of the small arena collapses more every time you hit him.

Still, a solid game and you can see the beginnings of the style, pace and intensity that would come into its own later on. Look forward to giving Ys 2 a go.

Surely not, the required interface etc can't be done through the cart slot.

Nope, it will boot up Mega CD BIOS from other regions and that allows you boot up the corresponding region disc.
The developer, I believe has said he has no interest in working on CD emulation at the moment.

Thats pretty cool, so it does away with the need to replace the bios with a multiregion one?

You can't load mega-cd through the cart slot, I don't think its technically possible. So the dev would have to design something that attaches to the expansion slot

No more need for a multiregion hack. You can simply select "Run CD" from the main menu and the stock Mega CD BIOS is loaded, otherwise select a different BIOS the same way you'd load any game ROM.
I was under the impression the MD Everdrive could also do this ?

Definitely, would save having to do a very complicated and messy internal mod.

My thinking exactly, definitely the cart would provide the recommended way to do it.

Have to agree with that. XSeed knew that Ys 1 had some obtuse moments, so much so that they included a walkthrough of the first game in the manual. You'll be glad to know that Ys 2 is a massive improvement and a fantastic game. I still think Ys 1 is worth playing though since the ridiculously fast combat is so much fun as long as you refer to the walkthrough when you get stuck.

Can probably arrange for you to try my cart out to see if it works on the CD-X before you buy one. I think I have the CD-X ROMs already on it.

Started God of War 3 last night. Despite the series being as deep as a paddling pool I've enjoyed the series and needed something silly after 100 hours of Xenoblades complexity. I'm not actually enjoying this one as much as previous games. It's early days yet but the combat isn't as satisfying and QTE bosses have lost their luster. Maybe I've been spoiled by Bayonetta. Also the frame rate is absolutely terrible and really affects the game poorly. It uses a deffered rendering engine meaning the game looks gorgeous and there's little to know screen tearing but its at the expense of really sluggish controls that really don't work in a fast paced action game. Also the double jump seems to only work when it wants to due to this lag. Kind of disappointed so far.
