I think I preferred it to CoD:MW overall.
Certainly it was more of a challenge.
Now, off to Smyths to trade it in!

Get scrabble for it or a box of Lego.

Don't like online multiplayer, just don't like it.
I prefer the single player story led stuff tbh....

    plus,

    I've no mates :(

It takes the first level to get into the game but once you do it's amazing. Also make sure you at least play it on Normal although I'd recommend hard mode. It adds more objectives rather than making the game tougher although on hard you can't kill any innocent gaurds!

Oh it's a work of unadulterated genius, there's no question about that. The combat is sublime and the grading system seems harsh but it does make sense eventually.

I'm playing Binding of Isaac at the moment... it's very addictive and very tough!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,106 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I thought Binding of Issac was decent for an hour or two. Then it just started irritating me. A mix of many genres and games, but weaker than all its varied influences. The awkward dual stick shooting pissed me off particularly.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had started to play through Yoshi's Island for the first time on my 3DS. I've managed to stick with it and am halfway through World 5 (of 7 I think). I only play it on the train home to Lusk though so don't have too long.

In a way I think this way of playing the game is hurting the experience. The levels in this game are much bigger and with more multiple paths than other 2D Mario games. So with the limited time I have I find myself rushing through each level, only stopping for collectibles if I happen across them.

Other than that I think it is a pretty good game but not a patch on the original Super Mario World. The controls are a little bit loose but that might just be the annoying circle pad on the 3DS. The graphics in this game continue to impress me though.

I've played it on GBA before and found myself playing in exactly the same way as yourself. I think the small screen really hurts it and would love to play it as intended on the SNES.

The GBA port has a few issues graphically and it's no where near as nice looking as the SNES game. Also the lack of resolution really does hurt the game. It's worth playing through the levels and getting all the collectible, you see more of each level and getting 100% in each world unlocks a secret level, some of which are very tough!

Yoshi's Island is probably my favourite platformer.

Shinobi - curse you, random yellow ninjas who drop from the sky and kick you in to the nearest punji pit before you even realise what's going on! Enjoying it otherwise, except for a few silly spots you have to memorize because of blind enemy placement. Guess it's keeping with the old school vibe!

Sly 2 - I like the hub structure, although could have done with a bit of honing down as the game seems way too long. Only 50% through and I just think it lacks the well-considered brevity of the first. Still, it's definitely more varied, could just do with less of it.

Analogue: A Hate Story - clever little visual novel, with a decent story and some fun interface quirks.

Well I've been trying to master Linn in Alien Versus Predator. Decided to check the dip settings on my board as it seemed more difficult than it shuld be - turns out the difficulty level was set up to 7 - 4 is default! So I dropped it down and started doing much better.

Noticed something else though - default factory settings have you starting with zero lives. There is one extend at 100,000 points - but that's it.

So to 1cc this baby properly, you can't die even once until that extend and then that gives you one window to make a mistake in the whole game. Punishing stuff!

I do quite well with Linn now on the first three stages, but eventually just run out of stamina against the hoards coming at me. I'm not used to playing fighting games at all (this really does play more like a scrolling Capcom fighter than a beat em up).

Fantastic fun though! Those air throws she does are addictive.

I love those games (never played Thief 3 though). Thief Gold is my favourite. The underground casino level is my top choice. So atmospheric!

    Metal Gear Solid????? Jog on!

Woah, wait now. Thief games aren't shmups or weird perverse Japanese dating sims - what's happened to you Pyong?!

I believe you are referring to Mr. Retr0gamer there sire. :)

I like other genres aside from SHMUPS. Just.... not as much. And I don't really buy any other genre. Keeps the limited shelf space in my office healthy. :D

Weird , I've never played it in the arcades where you didn't have the one extra life?

You hit the extend very early on - somewhere around the first level. So it's possible you got it every time without even noticing!

Yeah check out this 1cc, they start on 0 and get the extend at 100,000

Just spent a good few hours playing SimCity on the SNES

    Basic but fun :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,528 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

It's the version I had the most fun with as well, I enjoyed it a lot more than the Snes version of Sim City 2000.

Still, there was little to equal the intellectual bliss of smacking sheep in Populous!

Ah, so that's which one it was, excellent.
I wonder if I have it somewhere....
    Think I do....

I must keep my eyes out for a Megadrive for you on my travels, the original model.

Played some TMNT on the NES last night. It really is a badly made mess of a game but you can still extract some fun out of it. I think AVGN was too harsh on it, as he always is but every point he made against the game is valid.

Actually, Nickelodeon have a game up on their website to promote the remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's basically a re-jig of the Shredder cockpit boss battle from Turtles in Time. Apparently, it's gottten a better reception than Ubisoft's attempt from a few years back.

Its not retro just yet but started after reading Retro's blog a while back I started Fragile Dreams on the Wii last night.

Only played for an hour and the controls are a bit Janky but the world is just Beautiful and quite immersive, it seriously gave me the HeebieJeebies a couple of times while fighting Ghosts.

I had planned to go out this Friday but now maybe not...

Fragile Dreams has it's problems but the overall experience is well worth it. Some of the stories about the ghosts and the short stories you get from the items you find can be very moving.
